Though it is yet another sad reflection on our society that these kind of tragedies are happening, and perhaps will always happen, it is not made any better by the use of internet for 'dating', something I notice the media is always quick to take up on.
But wait one moment, there has always been predators in society, and all manner of potential criminals, there will always be these kind of people, so the internet is not to blame, as even in the days prior to this web of communication we all use, there were atrocities committed. The internet is not all evil, but sometimes used as a scapegoat for the current ills in society, as what is the taste of some, is available to all, all get to see if they search hard enough and there make their judgements. Judgements on knowledge they could only guess at prior to the web.
The multi murderer Peter Sutcliffe, aka the Yorkshire Ripper did not use the web to meet his victims, he met them via the same means as others have done for centuries, yet he still commited his crimes for years prior to the police getting an inkling of who he was, and he did'nt leave a trail, like typical pornography on his computer, so if anything crime after the fact detection has become easier with the web, but this still does not help the victims of such crimes. Perhaps the truth is, the reality is though the web makes things easier for everyone, it is just the same as it has ever been. Dating and relationships can be fraught with danger, and one can never truly know the potential of a person one meets in the course of our lives.
The internet is not to blame in this instance, nor is it in my oppinion to blame for any other instances, what goes on in this technologcal age of communication is just the same as it has ever been.
The good thing is, this person that is wanted in connection with this deed and his details are splashed on the web for all to see as a warning to others and to aid in his capture, something that would prior to the internet hardly have been known perhaps past the immediate area of the crime and perhaps a cursory mention on the national tv news bulletins.
My thoughts go out to the family and child of Clare Wood, also to the family of George Appleton and I do hope via this internet that he, George Appleton is caught post haste.
For those who've not seen the UK news: he was found hanged by his own hand in a derelict building 6 days after the murder.
He was clearly a serial abuser, stalker, manipulator, and his multiple victims had been left almost defenceless by the legal system.
He'd been imprisoned for such offences, several victims had warned the police he was a danger and sought protection; what they got wasn't enough.
The internet is clearly not to blame: he'd have done the same whenever he was born, just as a few men have always done.
But we must always remind those new to the scene that people like this do exist, and it is necessary to take precautions for your own safety.
