JERUSALEM – Moderate Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of Israel's governing Kadima Party has declared victory in a tight race with hawkish Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Livni made her claim in a speech to supporters. She said, "Today the people chose Kadima. ... We will form the next government led by Kadima."

Does this mean they won't make us attack Iran ? That would be nice.

Isn't their 'moderate' party similar to our democratic? I can't remember.

Latest news is that both sides are declaring victory:

The problem is that in a multi party system, losing even three votes could force a new election. And the three votes that usually cause no confidence are the ultra Orthodox.

Of course, no matter who is heading the Knesset, Hamas will still be sending suicide bombers into Jewish grocery stores, old age homes and preschools.

FYI - The latest updates on the Israeli election is that the vote it is too close to call.

""It's a typical Israeli election in that you might have two winners," Israeli political analyst Chemi Shalev told CNN. "The clear-cut winner, in the sense that she did much better than any expectations, is Tzipi Livni and Kadima. But we have to judge elections by the bottom line, and if it turns out that ... Benjamin Netanyahu will be the the prime minister, he will be judged to have been the winner."

CNN correspondent Ben Wedeman and Israeli political analysts warned that exit polls had been wrong in past elections."

I'd be curious to learn about those attacks, as I thought there hadn't been any suicide bombs away from military targets like border crossings for half a decade.  Can you elucidate?                                                                                                                                                                                                  Meanwhile, Arab Knesset members are threatened with summary execution for the crime of speaking to disaffected Arabs.  It would appear from the thrust of your comment that ultra-nationalist politics are acceptable on one side but not the other.  More "might makes right"? [8|]
