So I've finally gotten a hold of a sewing machine that can handle leather.  The only problem, I don't know much about leather. Any information would be fantastic.  What kinds of leather are best for what sorts of projects, where do you get your leather, what thicknesses can hold up to what sort of stress.

Thanks ahead of time

I personally shopped here.  I don't know about sewing machines because I hand made stuff.  I am sure they can help you.  Oh, and they can cut out stuff for you as well so all you have to do is sew it together.  They also have spikes, studs and other decorations.

Good Luck and have fun

Depends what the leather is going to be used for as to what thickness etc it should be. I've recently endeavored to start making my own leather products, so i can't be of too much help, plus pretty much all my stuff is going to be done with rivets, not sewing.

<Warning - unhelpful post alert>

I'd tend to just go into the country and find myself a nice looking cow to slaughter.  Beef for dinner for a month as a plus point.

Depending upon the make of your machine, there may be a presser foot available for working with leather. I believe it's teflon coated so it glides across the surface of the leather and doesnt 'stick'.

I am planning on making everything from corsets to collars and everything in between. Thats why I need just general information on all sorts of leather.   I have a few people who are interested in leather corsets giving me sad puppy eyes so I need to figure out what weight would be appropriate for one of those some time soon.  I have Corset coutil to flat line to some of the lighter and softer leathers if I can't find a good texture in a heavy enough leather.  I just want to be sure that whatever I make is going to last as well as being beautiful.

well, really, the weight etc is up to personal preference. You probably don't want something TOO heavy, or too light. so maybe somewhere in the 4-6oz range? probably want something that wont get nasty from body oils etc, latigo is a good leather for that, you can get a good side of latigo from Tandyleatherfactory.com for about $150. would think that would be plenty of material for a corset, and probably a couple other goodies with the remnants.

thought i'd ad, for the collar, might want to go with something like 10oz latigo. pretty strong stuff.

I have 5 sewing machines. each different. Depending on the leather used and whether or not it is a repair or new project will determine which I use. my largest will sew 1" thick good for saddles harness and restraints.
when sewing repairs. since leather needles cut holes in the leather we try to use the same holes when sewing it back together. too many holes will act like perforated cardboard and just tear. Also certain sewing patterns are not only for design but for structural integrity.
