defiantbadgirl -> sex and ovarian cysts (2/15/2009 8:34:53 PM)

I have cysts on my ovaries and I suspect endometriosis, but they won't know that until during my surgery. After surgery, including a d and c, I know I won't be able to have sex for 6 weeks. I want to get all the sex in I can beforehand. Sir and I have been taking it easy because of my problem, but  sometimes I like it rough. Can rough sex cause my cysts to pop or am I just being paranoid?

not sure myself, but why not ask your doc? sounds like it probably wouldn't be the best of ideas... but i'm no MD.

It's perfectly OK to pop an ovarian cyst. What happens is a little blood is released into the abdominal cavity, which will cause irritation after the initial pang when the cyst ruptures. The cyst itself is then resorbed safely by your body. It is unusual to rupture a cyst via sexual activity, unless pressure is suddenly applied directly above affected ovary. I believe good strong orgasms will help with cramping, if that is an issue for you. You will be sore after your procedure, so please don't abrade your vagina or bruise your cervix preoperaively. Use lube to keep tissues healthy so your healing will be quicker. Good luck and enjoy the postop cuddling and creativity.
Ovarian cysts rupture spontaneously sometimes. If it happens, you'll feel a sharp jab in your belly off to one side, and some aching for a few days. It actually feels better than the pain of an intact cyst, which looks like a little bubble and pushes on the fallopian tube, which is a very sensitive girl part.

I also had a laparascopy, hysteroscopy and a D&C.  I had my right ovary removed because of endometriosis.  I was relieved that this ovary was not malignant.  In my case, I was not allowed to have sex for 1 week.  I could not shower for 48 hours, either [:'(].  I also have three minor incisions near my belly button.  Within one day, I was up and driving to the store.

Right now, I feel good that this is over and have had no complications.  I am also greatful that I have a wonderful gynecologist.  She is awesome!

I am wondering if your doctor is recommending that you have a hysterectomy

Is your doctor recommending that you undergo a hysterectomy?

Quite a few years ago I suffered with repeated ovarian cysts that would grow and burst. It had nothing to do with sex or lack of sex. They just burst spontaneously. I had to live on vicodin for a year until i begged my gyn to fix me. I don' believe that rough sex will affect you much.

orgasms cause the uterus to contract and i know if you have a lot of scar tissue from endo this can cause pain... i don't think this could cause a rupture, but i don't know. i know muscle relaxers and heating pads can be great friends...

I had the same thing and they pretty much let them go thinking they would most likely go away on their own... I assume being popped.  But sex could be very painful or during ovulation.  I would say as long as the doctor didn't tell you not to have sex... you should be fine if you can handle the pain, but do call and ask.

The one thing that I never understood and didn't pay attention to when told after having a um was that six week wait.  When I was to have the test to see what was going on in there the doctor explained it to me.  He said that when they tell you to wait it can be a very serious thing if you don't.  He said that the vains are thinner and can break easier.  There is a large vain that could burst. He said he had two patients that didn't wait and both burst the major vain down there.  One made it to the hospital in time to get it taken care of and the other didn't.  How it all works, I don't know... but this is what he told me.

I thought the no sex for 6 weeks was because the cervix was not yet completely closed and there was a risk of injury/infection.

FelineFae -> RE: sex and ovarian cysts (2/17/2009 7:21:44 AM)

my doc said i'd been fine (to have sex) after a week, but he also said i was healing very fast.
maybe age plays into recovery time? but i did end up hemoraging some, but had no infection at all.

Just an FYI, sex before hand is not going to kill you but can be risky. Depending on what the cyst is composed of and how it got there, if it is from bacteria then it would be a bad thing if they poped because you could go into septic shock. I am having my own personal experience with that right now. My mother had an ablation done last year with a contaminated instrument and almost died from Septic shock. Just yesterday they gave her a hysterectomy and removed her ovaries and her cervix due to the cyst's growing and poping which were sending bacteria back into her system each time.
