A friend of mine quit smoking pot about a week and 1/2 ago. She had been smoking almost daily for years. Her blood pressure has shot way up. Does anyone know if this could be her body's reaction to quitting smoking?

I would suggest that the hipipe tobaccie was calming her and now she's experiencing some stress, giving it up, a period of adjustment.

Please pardon the language but.... fuck yes there is a period of adjustment!!!!! (yes, five !'s)
I had to quit smoking my beloved doobage about 2 weeks ago. Apparently my delightful new doctor won't treat me if said beloved doobage shows up on a blood test.

Yeah I am cranky. Twitchy. Whinyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Not sure if its related but I am also running more than my usual low grade fevers, I am more than my usual headachey self too.

Sigh. I truly am sorry to be ranting but this is just too timely to pass up. Pass. Pass. Ohgods. Pass the dutchie on da lef' hand side....

Help.

Heya does anyone know how long it takes for THC to pass out of the blood stream?
*twitch*

Dear fiend,
You'll be better in a month.  Also some cognitive functioning will return too!
God help you if people around you still smoke.

Sir's doctors all know He smokes pot for pain relief.  Not one of them has refused to treat Him, in fact the consensus is if it works for Him then no problem.

He has had problems with high blood pressure when trying to quit cigarettes, it has taken a few weeks for it to level back out again.  Mind you He was smoking up to 50 a day and cut back to less than half of that, so it was quite a drop in consumption.  He still hasn't managed to quit completely but speedway season finishes in a couple of months so that is the big "quit time".

The difference could be the laws governing Class C drugs, doctors are having to report every single prescription they write now and a lot simply don't want to prescribe them at all now.
My last doctor had no problems with me smoking pot, he understood that it helped both the chronic pain and the insomnia.

I can understand a doctor not wanting to jeoperdize (Sp, it is 2:30am lol) their license, which it would. But it makes me angry that I can't use something non-addictive (hmmm), easy to get, easy to use and basically natural instead of relying on a bevy of very expensive pills.

Plus I love the smell of pot. The taste of pot. I adore it.

I went to a fibro group tonight and mentioned it, everyone there who has relied on weed has been told by their doctors if they test positive for it then they will be 'fired' by their doctors.

Right now I can't sleep though I took 2 different sleeping pills, I slept for 3 hours now am wide awake. Previously all I had to do was hit the bowl a couple of times and I'd fall back to sleep. Now...I will be up for hours typing rambly stuff and surfing weird sites!

hugs camille, you can always call this insomniac and we could prowl those weird websites together LOL!!  Yea, i'm still up at that hour

And yea, it's so much better to rely on the side effect inducing, highly addictive sleeping pills they charge mega bucks for as opposed to the more "natural" drugs.  Sometimes I wish I could smoke pot, but having tried it, found myself horribly sick and so nope, I'll stick to my toss/turn/groan/repeat nightly ritual

camille65,

with regards to marijuana law reform in the Great State of Texas:

quote:

...House Bill 164, an act to allow for certain marijuana patients to present a medical necessity defense in court, has been referred the House Committee on Public Health.

If approved, this measure would offer protections to patients who use marijuana medicinally, as well as to physicians who discuss marijuana therapy with their patients.

Please take a moment today to contact your elected officials and urge them to support HB 164. If your representative sits on the House Committee on Public Health, it is particularly important that he or she hears from you now...

Thanks for the information beth... sometimes this is beyond frustrating!

Hugs to ya pj, I will call you next time my body decides to pull an all-nighter, gawd late night television is boring and you are much more entertaining.

So, I bought a fifth of rum today. Maybe that will help put me to sleep. I detest the taste of alcohol so I am going to pretend its cough syrup lol. To be honest, the pain is so bad right now that I think I would happily chug swamp water if it helped me.

I find it ridiculous that I can't even discuss this topic with my doctor for fear of being fired from his care. I don't smoke a lot, just 3 hits and I'm good for the night. Its cheaper than medication and with a whole lot less side effects.

Maybe I will take up the cause?

I would simply take my business elsewhere. I'll be goddamned* if someone who works for me will tell me what to do.

*Some Christians are offended by that word, if so my apology. It just fit. Realize that I use it very rarely and used it because of that.

It might not be as easily done as said for some, sorry about that too, but realize that once one considers their rights more important than their life, there is no going back.

I borrowed one of those BP meters and checked, I believe that I did not have a buzz at the time. It came out 120/80 which is borderline, but not worth doing anything about. I'd have to check see if there is an effect. Perhaps in me I can isolate it, for example I have gone days just recently as it's "dry" lateley. However I have developed a tolerance level for typical aggravations and so forth, so maybe some weekend I'll try, check it first, burn then check it again.

Hell we might find another use for the stuff. Like glaucoma. I think I made a slight mistake before my last eye exam, burned. It is very possible that it can slew the results of a glaucoma test. Yes I do go to an optometrist from time to time, as my vision is something like 20/400 uncorrected.

But as my situation might relate to the thread, if I were diagnosed with borderline glaucoma and advised of the fact, I would surely go down there after a fattie for another test. See if it does any good and go from that point. I am not there yet.

There are other cases. A buddy of mine had bad pneumonia, to the point where they put drain tubes in his lungs and got a hell of alot of fluid out. He could've died. Well he wants me to bring him some Mother nature. This guy has tubes in his lungs and is hooked up to all kinds of tubes, IVs and whatnot, I made the decision that it would not be a good idea and refused flat out. While criminal culpability did enter my mind, I did not base my decision on that. If he suffered internal injuries because of it, or maybe even died, that was not my intent. He was already getting a bunch of morphine as it was, I was thinking about that he could've torn himself up on the inside and never knew it. Reread the words "never knew it". Nope, I don't think so.

Though it may look like it at times, Mama din't raise any fools.

At any rate, one of these Saturdays or something, I'll see if I can remember to try it out, borrow the BP machine, test, burn then test again. I'll do it in a very calm environment, alone if I can swing that. Of course then maybe I'll try another one and test again :-). We want to be thorough here no ?

These cheapo BP meters have a drawback, you have to hold your arm a certain way. Whatever the readings I will endevor to make sure my posture and everything is as identical as possible. In this case I think the comparative numbers would mean alot more than the absolute numbers.

In fact it might be interesting to do this say, before and after eating (or copping the munchies whichever the case may be). In fact maybe even run again with the introduction of a few beers. Sorry I am not willing to do anything stronger these days, but I could just imagine what coke or something like that would do.Speaking of coke, how about Coke ? Yes Coca Cola, or something eaten or drank that contains alot of sugar. I am also unwilling to try that as I don't use sugar. Perhaps someone else can delve into that part of the study.

I wonder if even cigarettes might not have some effect. There are plenty of examples of people becoming bitchy and irritated when they quite the regular tobaccie.

masternoname,
There is a very good chance the increase in BP is related to the withdrawal of the cannabis. Following are a couple of good links. Still, there is never 100% agreement as to what the side effects of cannabis are.

I know from my experience, I am very sensitive to sativa, which triggers more panic in me, whereas indica dominant strains are most effective on my pain.

Lowering Of Blood Pressure Achieved Through Use Of Hashish-like Drug
Marijuana withdrawal as bad as withdrawal from cigarettes

camille,
I am so sorry you are faced with such a predicament. Here is another link you may find helpful. Marijuana Policy Project
I am blessed to live in one of the 13 states that can legally prescribe marijuana (though the feds don't give a hoot!). I have a doctor who gives me my prescription and my GPs are totally cool with it. It's much healthier than all the vicodin I was taking.

Because of asthma I cannot smoke, but we have some great edibles in LA.

As for sleep, brain chemistry is very tricky. If your mind won't shut down, you can try something is innocuous as a homeopathic remedy, but I just found out last month that marijuana negates the effectiveness of homeopathy. Another option is the Bach Flower Rescue Remedy Sleep formula which has White Willow added to the Rescue Remedy to help quiet the overactive mind. Bach Flower remedies are not antidoted, thus you can take them with anything.

I myself do well with GABA. GABA is the brain's principal inhibitory neurotransmitter. These are the very same receptors that the benzodiazepams fit into to help calm the mind. I use a chewable GABA sold at a health food store. You can get it in tablet as well. It is also comes mixed with other amino acids or herbs. A few great herbal sleep formulas that utilize GABA and Theanine are Gaia Herb's Sound Sleep Sound Sleep, Irwin Naturals Power to Sleep PM (this has melatonin) Irwin Naturals, Source Naturals Night rest with GABA, Theanine, Melatonin and some great herbsNight Rest

THE ROLE OF GABA IN THE PATHOGENESIS AND TREATMENT OF ANXIETY AND OTHER NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS

I know what lack of sleep can do for when I was on high doses of prednisone, I averaged 2 hours of sleep a night for a couple of years. I took restoril to knock me out on my days off. By using herbs, a breathing technique that has helped me become almost symptom free of asthma and fibromyalgia and the use of probiotics and fish oil, my brain chemistry is not as out of whack and I now sleep about 6 hours a night, which is perfect for me, though I hope to need less as I progress with the breathing technique.

Oh, another great supplement is theanine. Theanine is found in green tea, though where it is grown, when it is grown and when it is harvested will affect the theanine content. Oolong tea is higher in theanine content and I try to drink some daily.
Theanine

I hope you get some relief. If you need any support feel free to Cmail me.

Blessings,
TT

Thank you for the information Tara. Unfortunately my insomnia is not a problem of being unable to turn my brain off (heh, that happens all too easily for me) but instead it is my body that refuses to submit to sleep. I cannot stay asleep longer than 90 minutes, there is something that feels like an electrical zap that wakes me up.

So far the rum trials have been...interesting. The bad part is that I have to heavily mix with loads of fruit and juice, requiring me to wake up in an hour to go pee. Argh. Plus it leads to drunken posting.....

There would be no know medical reason for a person's blood pressure to increase due to quitting. In fact smoking pot is medically known to increases blood pressure. Pot also contains more carcinogens than tabacco.

I think the main reason that smoking anything would increase BP is because it acts as a vasoconstrictor. That would be the opposite of a vasodilator which is used to treat high BP.

I guess it is mainly other factors that are being examined here.

I have had a doctor ask me if I smoke pot before. I urgently assured him that I am too much of a chicken to smoke anything but he actually suggested I do it for my occular migraines. I have to say though I never followed the advise, it is too scarry to me haha.

you don't HAVE to smoke it...if you are "too much of a chicken to smoke anything".

you can eat foods made with canna-butter or canna-oil, or even freeze the cannabutter into cones for suppositories if the nausea is too great to keep anything down and you don't have access to a vaporizer.

this slave has known folks to use lollipops as another effective non-smoking delivery system.
