Ugh, being allergic to baby oil sucks. And through trial and error, most massage oils. Because most have some form of baby oil in them.

Help, Master wants to find something he can rub me down in and not have to run for the benadryle afterwards, or make kids think mom has measles... LOL

Any helpful hints on massage oils or creams that are fun, not dangerous, and not used for cooking? For ones with sensative skin?

Have you tried an aloe vera plant? I guess for a full body massage it would need to be a really big plant, but you could give it a shot. Might be sticky rather than creamy though. But, hell, that could be fun, too! hehehe Also, try a keyword seach for 'hypo-allergenic' and 'oil' and see what you come up with. Seems to me that someone, somewhere would have put something out there for those with sensitive skin.

Good luck!

Celeste

thanks bita,

i tried the keyword and got alot of weird stuff that i had 1 either tried already, or 2 side eefects was rash or burning to skin. (Go figure when looking for such a product... LOL) But then again when given meds for migrains, one side effect... may cause headache... LOL

But I'll look again. I'm sure there's something out there.

Are you also allergic to vegetable oils?
Olive oil, sesame oil, walnut oil all work well for massage-plus make you good to eat...
It is possible that you are allergic to the fragrance component and not the oil--try fragrance free products or those advertised as Hypoallergenic.

I left a message for my massage therapist bestbud. But you got me wondering, so I did some quick research. I see the main ingredient in baby oil is mineral oil, along with fragrance, and tocopheryl acetate which is vitamin E. I take it it is the mineral oil that is the problem? There are many essential oils. Could it be the tocopheryl acetate (vit E) is the problem rather than the oil? I see it shows up in many recipes.

to be honest, i don't know what causes it. I used Vit E when pregnant right from the pill. Busted it open and rubbed it on. No problems. I melted a small stick of cocobutter to use on breast. No problems. But after pregancy ended... BAM.. back to the rashes and itching.

Now i do use soaps that have oils like cocobutter... aloe... etc.... no problems. It just seems to be with baby oil... and types of massage oils. I'm looking at these sites that you added to post. Interresting. Thank you and going to keep reading.

I am going to recommend shopping somewhere different--

Bed, Bath and Beyond has a section of great body products--try looking at those ingredients ( they have more natural base products)

Since you are in My part of the world--Hudson Belk as a new section called Origins, they have all natural bases to their bath products.

You can also try Bath and Body works, they carry natural as well--the white tea is very nice--

and if there is a Priscilla's there, they carry a great line called Kama Sutra---no baby oil base--

Excellent suggestion too, My daughter makes her own aromatherapy by adding a scent to olive oil---food for thought. (ohhhh bad pun)

I see you've found something you can use, but if you'd care to try another vegetable oil, canola oil with an essential oil mixed into it works well for massage also. Canola oil is the second pressing of rape seed. It's not the ideal base, but is cheap enough to try once and discard if you find a poor reaction to it. The best way I've found to work with this is to mix up small amounts, never storing the mixture or the base for too long, as it will go rancid otherwise. Also allow it to warm in the hands as opposed to with a warmer.

BrownCocoaBBW -> RE: Sensative Skin To Oils (1/18/2006 7:36:31 PM)

I am very allergic to most oils - including all of the ones suggested here. If you have no luck with the ones you purchased, I use 100% pure coconut oil. It is very nice and does the trick.

And smells sooooooooooo good.

I went to Priscilla's and the lady working there showed me a whole new line of Sinful Sensations and others. I bought I bottle of Sinful Sensations warming massage lotion. I rubbed some on and we continued to talk and shop. No reaction to it. It warms as you rub it. And it's Rich Vanilla. Walked around licking myself.. LOL

If this works out, I'm going to go back for other flavors and take a look at the other types they have for us more sensative ones.

Thanks all for your help.... Huggsss to MHOO for knowing what's in our area.

wetsub000 -> RE: Sensative Skin To Oils (1/20/2006 12:30:19 AM)

I've just completed a massage course and here is the advice from my teacher regarding oils.

Baby oil is a petroleum product, it's manufactured chemically and is generally bad for skin and should never be used for massage purposes.

The best oils to use on the skin are cold-pressed vegetable oils. The way they are extracted from the plant material is important, it means they haven't been modified by heat or any other process that may change their chemical composition. Her recommendation for the best oil to use was jojoba, followed by sweet almond, most people can also handle others such as olive, sunflower, safflower etc. So yes, even cooking oil is OK for most people if it's extracted using cold-pressed techniques.

More common to give problems are the essential oils that are often mixed into the base/carrier oil. Use them with care.

truesub4u -> RE: Sensative Skin To Oils (1/20/2006 7:18:03 AM)

thank you all.

I jotted down all these ideas and others from sites you left for me to look into.

So now i have a nice list of things to show Master and let him know what's available too.

Thank you all for your help in this matter.

jessica

oh yeah... wetsub,

this isn't ment sarcastic, it's curiousity...... can you please ask this teacher if baby oil is gernerally bad for the skin, why do so many use it on children? I know I didn't use it on mine, because of me being allergic to it. But now i'm a little concerned about the product being so highly used. Like I said, this isn't ment to piss you off or sound sarcastic, it's and honest question of concern. Alot of up coming members of my family (nephews, nieces, and my own kids) will be in child baring stages before too long. And I would like some more information on this before they break out the baby oil.

Thanks again for the information.

The first step to finding an appropriate massage oil would be to find out which ingredient is giving you an allergic reaction. Check the labels of the baby oils and massage oils you have used that give you a rash and look for ingredients that they have in common. These are the ones to avoid.

In my experience it was perfumes or dyes that gave me an allergic reaction, so if your skin is sensitive, that is a good thing to skip anyway. They irritate your skin worse than most ingredients. You could try sweet almond oil, walnut oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil. Make sure you find the pure and unscented kind. They can be found at most health food stores. (Nature's Pharm) If these don't work for you, try Shea or Cocoa Butter. They're great for your skin and low in irritants.

Good luck!

wetsub000 -> RE: Sensative Skin To Oils (1/22/2006 12:32:35 AM)

Hello Jessica

Good question. She said that as a petroleum based product it dried out the skin and shouldn't be left on for any length of time. I think that people use it on babies as a barrier cream eg vaseline (which is also petroleum based) and a water repellant. So it's not used on babies to moisturise their skin, but rather to create a barrier between their buttocks and their waste products.

I don't think I ever used baby oil on my kids, but I did use vaseline from time to time and I've used it for other purposes too. I don't any more.

Regards
wet
