Yes, i know none of You are doctors............Yes, i know it's not wise to come to the boards looking for medical advice....But, i did...
If i sound like i'm whining.....Well damn i probably am. Last Wednesday i felt like i couldn't breathe. i was coughing and hacking........like i was breathing through a straw... Thursday i felt a little better, although pretty horrible. Friday during the day i felt okay... Friday night i got home from work and was throwing up... Went to dinner Friday evening...same thing.. Saturday and Sunday i felt okay but couldn't do much more than sleep. Went to work yesterday...felt fine.. Got up this morning and ended up having to call in sick to work because i could not stop throwing up....i've slept most of the day. i've also been bleeding for the last week and a half or so... bah.
Is this just the flu? Is there anything they can give me to stop this?
Thanks,
Kali

So you haven't been to the doctor?  Go to your doctor, get at least a pulse ox reading.  Sounds like your lungs aren't operating on all four "cylinders".

I worked in a very busy emergency department for many years and saw thousands of people with various types of winter crud, from flu to very nasty colds.  None of them make you bleed.

Get thee to a physician, pronto.  Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

bah, my apologies.... The bleeding started initially because i had screwed up my birth control pills. i'm not sure if the two are connected or not.  i just wish i could get past all this.

Pneumonia makes some people throw up.

Ginger, the real stuff often helps with nausea.

Reed's ginger brew has actual ginger root in it.

To me it depends, you could have the flu, you could have a stomach virus, you could have a form of pnuemonia if you are having problems breathing.  All in all, if you have to ask the question how long should i let this go on -- its sorta time to at least CALL the doctor if you have one who you have known for ever or call your doc anyway, explain the symptoms and see where they want you to go -- their office or the emergency room.

All in all, i think you already have your answer lol you just want someone to tell you nahhh, you don't have to go to the dr.  Its funny, when i feel sick or can't breathe know i am getting pneumonia, i never want to go to the doctor and every time after its like if i had just gone at the beginning i wouldn't have suffered 1/2 the amount i did.

I don't think the two symptoms are connected.
It is possible that you have  bronchitis - you may need a course of antibiotics - the best thing that you can do for yourself is to go to the doctor and tell them. The breathing through a straw thing is a bit worrisome.

It could be a very bad flu and not the short term variety. I have it and have for over a week but without the vomiting which is as likely in your case...choking, because you can't breath properly.

Now, having got this from my brother, I gave it to mother and friends and we are just eating OTC meds and resting.

Good luck and get lottsa bed rest. Give this the week and if still real bad...doctor.

OP- It sounds like you have a really nasty chest infection. Your throwing up because your coughing so forcefully its actually causing your abdominal muscles and diaphragm to spasm. As far as feeling like your breathing through a straw, you are. The mucus and fluid is so built up in your lungs its actually aggravating the bronchieols and bronchi in your lungs, causing them to constrict and swell, reducing the area you have to move air through. As far as the continued vomiting, you need to be drinking fluids. PERIOD or you will dehydrate. The drainage from your chest and sinus may also be irritating and contributing to your vomiting.

What they may give you; If its bacterial, you will receive and antibiotic, if its viral they can only treat the symptoms. You may get scripts for an inhaler, an anti-tussin (cough stopper) and something to stop the mucal production and break up the existing mucous.

Good luck, I hope you feel better and get your butt to a Dr. stat!

I'd tend to agree with kiwisub12.

For the breathing problems, are you having more difficulty taking IN air, or EXPELLING air from your lungs?
