That's the best one yet! Sufficiantly amusing while promising absolutely nothing. By jove, it just might work!

feydeplume -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:05:07 PM)

and yet oddly appealing to any math major out there... hmm I wonder if i Venn Diagrammed by past....

Sfortzando -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:08:30 PM)

You know, what would be really cool is if it happened to abide by golden rule as well.

feydeplume -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:11:26 PM)

yeah but wouldn't that mean that at least someone in my past was actually "straight"?

or just some sort of ratio that doesn't use "i"?

Sfortzando -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:16:22 PM)

Er...I didn't pay enough attention in Trig to be able to say for sure. The only reason I remember anything about the golden ratio or Phi at all is because of the frickin' DaVinci Code.

no worries, i just want you for your Reader's Digests!

For those who want to say it is only the "online" community who indulges in this stuff is fooling themselves.

Yeah...

It's defiently something I have noticed during my time in the real time communities as well and didnt intend for my post to target solely the online experience.

MG4Apuppygirl -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:28:15 PM)

Great fun isn't it? Watching all the different people peddle their crap, misinterpretations, expectations, ideals, vanilla philosophies, outrageous discrimmination, narcissism and over evaluation of the simplest things onto those of us who.....well really don't give a flying a fuck. I used to care, but after the amount of flame wars I inadvertantly became involved in and abusive messages I have received over the years due to my lifestyle choice, I can barely tolerate the "expectant community" who like religious nutcases, try time and time again to bend me toward their ridiculous "opinions".

When there cannot even be an agreement on the terms "Discipline" and "Punishment"......It's pretty much time to walk away.

Vendaval -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:28:31 PM)

Keep your bullshit filter firmly in place wherever you go and do not expect miraculous behavior from flawed human beings.

MadRabbit -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:31:56 PM)

Thanks for all the feedback and replies. Too many different interesting points of view and too much quality substance to thank everyone individually.

Redoubt -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:43:57 PM)

Ya know what, bunny?

The internet is like a book - take what works for you and incorporate it into your life - that dross that surrounds it, ignore it and let it slide off you.

There's a ton of great inspiration, and there's many more tons of crap that needs to be laughed at...

Just like people, avoid that which makes you edgy.

feydeplume -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 7:48:55 PM)

And one inadvertent hijack that none the less underlined the point you were making in the first place.

And if you stop and think about the first Christian relationship that had no role models and just one rule, it sort of makes you glad that the sex toy industry is moving to silicone as the standard and the prices for good blow up dolls (or both genders/sexes and possibly even intersexed) are falling.

We put so many expectations on our lives, not just the sex part, but the money, status, education, politics, dress code, dinner manners, i mean it never ends. It really is more a matter of finding a set of behaviors and beliefs that don't hurt you or anyone that doesn't need to be hurt, and getting on with your day.

My favorite webcomic, proving you don't even need to be able to draw to be entertaining.

Fascinating stuff, the joints of your fingers are each longer then the last by the order of Phi.

Returning briefly to the OP, I've always preferred principles over rules - situations change and with them, the rules - principles are more consistent, IMO.

My rule of thumb. :p

Sfortzando -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 8:02:03 PM)

Yeah, definitely sorry about the thread hijack. If it makes you feel any better, yours isn't the only one. Also, the spelling snark. Sometimes I let my inner brat get away from me.

I tend to view spirituallity the same way. Buying into one doctrine or philosophy doesn't make any sense to me, because they all promise an ideal that can never be achieved. I cherry pick what's right for me, and if that makes me fair weather, well I'm the one who has to live with it and I'd prefer that my weather is fair, to over extend the metaphor.

Amaros -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 8:13:11 PM)

Well shy not Cherry pick? Nothing so good as a nice plump Cherry bursting with juicy goodness - if you eat the green ones just because they're on the same bush, you're gonna miss out on them when they ripen up.

That metaphor made sense when I first thought of it.

The problem with Cherry picking, isn't the Cherry picking per se, it Cherry picking justifications for being assholes while pretending it's some pure, perfect and eternal thing.

Call it what it is, and stuff your face till the juice runs down your chin, it's evolutionary. The way I see it, we have all of history to choose from; if a thing can be done, somebody has tried it, and if they haven't yet, they will, give it time.

Sfortzando -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 8:52:13 PM)

I follow the cherry extended metaphore. Kinda. Enought to get the gist of it, anywho.

And yeah, cherry picking can get dangerous, i.e. Leviticus and the arguments agains gay marriage. You have to take everything with a grain of salt.

Also, avoid cliches like the plague. They're old hat.

feydeplume -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 8:53:23 PM)

ouch

Amaros -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 9:17:47 PM)

What cliche? Is that a rule or something?

I don't know exactly why, other than we seem to be having fun with this flirting thing, but the first phrase that popped into my mind was "wanna come up to my room and see my manual little girl?"

Seriously, I am not a 50 year old balding man being amazingly good (if i do say so myself) at imitating a female just long enough to be a total letch at you.

But yeah there is a secret handshake, a 400 page manual, a pin, a yearly picnic and outing, and a monthly meeting where we find new ways to drive D's over the deep end with petty demands and passive aggressive cooking.

im sooo crushin on you now...just sayin.

Sfortzando -> RE: A Community of Ridicoulous Expectations (2/18/2009 9:38:20 PM)

Lol...feydeplume and I kinda hijacked about three forum threads with this bizzare 'scene' involving fucking machines, Reader's Digest, and garage sales. You're certainly welcome to join the crackage!
