Ketchup on sauer kraut and scrambled eggs, you'd fit in perfectly in the UK, we put ketchup on just about anything. Something I wanted to ask you about though ... escargots. What do they taste like, as one would expect from something that leaves a slimy trail behind it, or completely different? Also, snails have a spikey tongue, so I'm wondering... okay, now I'm getting weird. Just tell me how snails taste and what their texture is like as I would like to try them in the future [:D]

Escargots are surprisingly very tender and soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth, even though they look like something you took out of a defective sink fixture. [:D]   They have kind of a mild and sweet taste, and are wonderful served drowning in melted, garlicky butter.  Try them, you'll love them!   (If they do have a spiky tongue, it cooks out very nicely!)

Octopus Jerky

Pug burger (Yes a dog, I only took a bite)

both when I traveled through  Korea

in the military, we just don't ask what we it is we're eating. if the locals are eating it, you can too.
i know that Master has ate kogogi and rat.
some people find that alligator is like chicken,,, not if it's done right, it taste so much better.
but i think the weirdest thing we ever ate was Korean ice cream pops with corn in them[:'(]
but ohhh the melon-pops there... so good! and aloe water, yummy!

i'm bookmarking this thread to re-read every time i get the urge to splurge and have something i'm not supposed to.  cures any notion of eating anything for quite awhile.

Squirrel
Armadillo
Snake (Diamondback Rattlesnake to be exact)
Bear
Buffalo
Kangaroo
Aligator
Haggis
various portions of Goat and Sheep that should probably never see the inside of a human's stomach
Crawdaddies (muuuuudbugs yuuuuuuummmmmmmmm)
Escargot
Oysters
Mountain Oysters
More types of Sushi and Soshimi than I can count
Blood Pudding
Head Cheese
Chocolate covered Grasshoppers and Ants ( anything is good if covered in high quality chocolate!)
Cactus I eat fairly routinely - it's a staple in a lot of mexican dishes that can be found in Oklahoma and Texas
Collard, Turnip, and Mustard Greens (sauted until limp in lard with just a bit of salt & pepper - served with a bigass bowl of pinto beans, fresh cornbread still hot from the oven, and a plate of freshly sliced tomatos, onions, and cucumbers)

MissMorrigan -> RE: Extreme Cuisine (2/22/2009 11:25:26 PM)

Thank you for answering me, Windchymes. I had built up this perception that they'd be tough and rather 'chewy', the exact opposite to how you've described them. So that decides it, I WILL try them in the near future and I'm always reminded of the scene in 'Pretty Woman' whenever someone mentions them lol

No for some mystery of nature they were designed to soak up the garlic and butter they are cooked in---yummmmmmmmm that's My aphrodisiac!

Cat

Crawfish.............YUM ...Do tell me you suck the heads!!  That where half  the flavor is.

chamberqueen -> RE: Extreme Cuisine (2/24/2009 7:30:38 AM)

I've traveled to 30 countries and always ate what my hosts provided.  Among ones not already mentioned are:

chicken feet
pig's ear
horse
raw hamburger meatballs treated with lemon juice (I don't recommend it - I got food poisoning)
fish heads
water snake
alligator
dorine (a fruit that raises your temperature and blood pressure and so is somethings used as an aphrodisiac)

When in the Orient I just got used to asking whether something was plant or animal because you often couldn't even tell that.

BlackPhx -> RE: Extreme Cuisine (2/25/2009 10:05:53 AM)

Hmm what have I eaten that would qualify as weird...

Bear
Venison
Rabbit
Squirrel
Nutria
Raccoon
Ostrich
Emu
Snake (rattler and boa)
Lion Scallopini (african and bred in captivity. Game menu in NY)
Elephant
Moose Jerky
Horse
Seal Jerky
Pemmican
Buffalo
Possom
Armadillo
Escargot (not weird)
Cat (I didn't know until too late)[sm=imsorry.gif]
Balut (disgusting and never do it again) [sm=eeew.gif]
Sweetbreads
Sheeps Eye Stew
Roasted Monkey
Mudbugs
Roasted Scorpion ([sm=eeew.gif])
as for things like Blood Puddings and what nots..those are just regionals and I consider them normal. Must add however,  more unexpected and unwelcome spiders and flies than I can to think about since I sleep with my mouth open.

poenkitten who wastes nothing of an animal if she can help it.
