Someone was talking about her birth control "patch" this evening while visiting here, and asked me where she could put it, that it wouldn't gunk up during sex. She had it on her fanny. I don't use a patch, so I have no clue, but I told her that I would ask. lol I've also heard that they get junky around the edges after a few showers. Are there any tips about that?

laughing, well I don't wear them either. But one of the least intrusive places to put one is inside of your upper arm. And yes, bathing does make them start to fall off. But if you use an arm band they stay in place better. Oh, and she really should follow the directions of placing it on a clean, dry area...no lotion or power where she wants to place it. Ah to not have to worry about those things any more. laughing. FREEEEE at last. Sundew

Greetings,

i do wear the patch that You were speaking of. As for showers making them fall off - no worries there. As long as the directions are followed and it's placed on a clean, dry area of skin they will last the entire 7 days (actually even on the 7th day it's a little difficult to pull them off - think duct tape removal! :) ) I did have experience with them 'getting junky' around the edges - i don't believe this is from showering but from clothes rubbing against the edges where the adhesive is able to pick up little bits of cloth. Best advice in how to avoid that would be either wear them on your rump low enough down not to rub against the edge of your underwear or on your shoulders in an area where the seams of your shirt won't rub against them. This being said because i think it's more the patch catching up against the edging of the cloth more than anything. As for where to wear them in general - they may be worn on your rump at either hip, on the front of either hip or on the shoulderblades.

She said that she has a problem with it wadding up during sex. Sundew mentioned under the arm. You didn't mention that. Is that not an option? I take hormones, but I take a pill. I wouldn't bother with sticking something on mah body, lol. An ex sister in law used to have something called norplant, and I thought that was pretty nifty. I wouldn't mind having something like that if they offered it for hrt.

Per the information given to me by my doctor and the information i received with the patches there was no option given to apply it to the underside of my arm.

i went to the Orthro Evra website FAQs (http://www.orthoevra.com/faqs/faqs.html#q10):

You can wear the ORTHO EVRA birth control patch on one of four areas of the body: your buttocks, abdomen, upper torso (front and back, excluding the breasts) or upper outer arm.

Personally, went i went through my options for birth control i decided upon the patch because A) i'm horrible about remembering to take pills B) there was less chance of weight gain with the patch than there was with the implant or shot options.

i've not had experience with it bunching up during sex - perhaps she could experiment with the different four areas given for the patch placement or perhaps experiment with different sexual positions (oh, darn! ).

Hope that i was able to help!

She doesn't have online access at home, but when she brings my daughter home today I am going to allow her to read the thread. Thanks!

I was on the patch for one month. I had gunk on my skin after it was off for a while. It made me break out, gain weight and I got depressed (all of those prolly intertwined with my breakup of the time too). Now I'm on depo-provera which is fine except after the 3 months with no periods, sex with anyone (or anything) over average size is painful because my cervix is so firm. I'm not gonna do my second shot until I have a period. It's been almost exactly 3 months and I think I ovulated yesterday. I can deal with 4 periods a year. I didn't like the patch because I have a 40 day cycle normally and the patch forced me into a 28-day cycle which sucked and gave me a heavy period with bad cramps when I usually never have any. If you don't have manic/depression (bipolar) then I think Depo is great.

I was on the patch for a grand total of a week. I still have a scar the exact size and shape of the patch on my shoulder from where it burned through my skin
One other option that no one ever really talks about is NuvaRing. It's a ring that is placed in the vagina for three weeks and then taken out for a week. It can be taken out or left in during sex. It is great for people that get sick from the pill or who can't handle other forms of birth control.
I know this is off topic, but I thought I would share my good experiences with the ring in case anyone else was having the problems I was having in trying to find a good birth control.

Edited for stupid spelling error

If ya wanted to be a real masochist could you put it on your breast providing their big nuff ?:P

ok ok I made this joke before I saw the no breast thing. and someone kindly pointed out on the breast you can tear or damage skin.

so how come it can't go under arm or something?

I think its because of the masses of tissue and glands in the breast and armpits.

i am on the Patch and i LOVE it... it surprises me to hear that it comes off for some people, mine hurts like heck when i take it off every week. As one poster said, it is just like duct tape and it 'waxes' everything underneath it.

The gunk that it leaves on you will come off easily if you put a little baby oil on it. i'm not sure why you can't put it anywhere but those four places, but *i'm* not gonna risk it.

When there is a really hot girl at a frat party, I have seen a tendency to bunching up during sex.

I would love to see ortho's explanation of why outside and not inside the arm, certainly are more blood vessels on the inside of the arm.

Perhaps it is because the skin on the underside of the arm is thinner and more sensative. The skin may be more easily damaged by the adhesive and the hormones may enter the body more rapidly then they should

in regard tot he placement of the patch...I am a devoted fan for the fact that i dont have to rememebr a pill everyday....cant rememebr everyday...every wednesday yes everyday no...and how the reason for the locations is fat distribution...I stick to my butt and my lower abdomen...i had a heck of a tiem with it on my arm and my chest and back...it does feel like duct tape coming off...and the gunk that collects is from the adhesive...catching things....i wear two types of patches one is for pain control and i have the same problem with both sites...when i remove them there is always a ring around the site...i try and rememebr to remove it with baby oil...alcohol just denatures the advsive but doesnt help get it off.. but there you go the answer as to location is becasue of fat distribution..
