littlesarbonn -> Where should someone move to take advantage of a decent job market? (2/24/2009 6:51:31 PM)

I'm currently working as a teacher in South Korea, and my job is about to go belly-up because the manager had more hopes than he had resources to make things happen. Which means, I'm going to be stuck in Korea (I'm a US citizen) and have to find a new place to go after that. I'm trying to figure out where is a decent job market to tap into during this recession, even if it's something temporary until I land back on my feet again. I have several MA degrees, so eventually I'll land okay, but at the moment, I need to find something to survive.

Where is a good place to make a start without having to wait months and months to find a job? In other words, can't exactly go the government route, because those jobs take months to get (unless someone knows an easier way that I do). And this is probably going to happen very fast as it has been two weeks past payday so far, and none of us have been paid.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. A kink-friendly area would be nice, too, but the priority is survival right now.

I heard that the Mars job market was building...

More seriously, what sort of experience do you have (teaching... what, for instance)? What are your degrees in?

You can always try getting a job on a college campus? Usually there's a whole bunch of low, or medium quality jobs open that pay decent enough to float you till you get a better one... but they're not particularly stimulating.

My degrees are in communication and political science. Neither is really all that great for landing jobs, although over time the communication job can gain access to public relations jobs. I've found college jobs somewhat elusive over the years, as most of the positions tend to be those that get filled from within but only post because it is required by law. Found that a really frustrating process that gets one's hopes up but achieves very little.

Check out Community Colleges...they often only require a Masters degree to teach and often pay OK.

A lot also depends on what your degrees are in too...that will affect your marketability.

Did you with the various online resume places yet?  (Monster, hotjobs.yahoo, etc)

Good luck in your quest!  And who knows, if you know Korean, there might be something available at the U.N. as a translator?   Or the CIA/FBI/NSA, given the current concerns about North Korea...

What he said, especially with PoliSci you can get teaching jobs with a Masters, even at a lot of PRIVATE colleges (two of the three PoliSci tenured faculty at my last university didn't have PhDs).

If you like teaching, it's especially a good avenue to go!

Of course, most colleges only want professors interested in tenure, but won't *give* tenure (or even offer tenure-track as a definite when they hire) to a majority of professors. You do have to pay adjunct faculty less :P

But they're usually well-paying, at least.

Try Japan... they are always looking for people who can teach English, or who can act as a liason for their industries working with US companies... China, too.

Singapore, Malaysia, India Since you are already out of the country and in asia why not explore those markets first?

All the jobs are in China, India, Mexico and poor countries in South and Central America.  But don't expect to even make minimum wage because under this fair trade lie, you'd only be paid 2 or 3 dollars an hour.  You see, the government did away with slavery in the US during the civil war but corps have brought it back in other countries as they rape our working class.

Although we have lost some blue collar jobs, the Raleigh. RTP, Triad area is still doing well for offering jobs--we have a multitude of colleges/universities, a growing communit college system and a myriad of what we call midmarket businesses. As I said, we have had some of the larger business with layoffs but not to the magnitude of the rest of the country-rent is more than reasonable--we have had foreclosures but again not close to what other cities have see. Our city is on the rise, not a decline and or state overall isn't doing that bad. We offer mountains, piedmont and the beach. LadyPact can vouch for some of the kink groups here as she does on occasion visit--there are four very active ones ( two groups here and then Greensville and the one she just visited  and two clubs within two hours driving).

For someone of your background, I think its worth a look: http://www.city-data.com/us-cities/The-South/Raleigh-Economy.html

Think about moving to China or India...they are moving more and more towards capitialism and opportunity for the individual while America is moving towards "entitlements".  On the other hand, if you do come home to the States, broke, pennyless and out of work..you might be elegible for Free schooling, healthcare, food stamps and the government cheese, a house with a mortgage paid for by neighbors...and an extended loving family of every patronizing liberal in the country.  I think you might actually do pretty well.

You have a major reconsideration in your thinking and goals..you are looking for work, and that is a major issue at the moment.

America does not reward people like you. I am truly sorry to say that everything you learned doesn't mean a damn thing when you can get more in government benefits than the $26,000 starting salary for a lead teacher.  Sorry..but that's reality these days.  Things HAVE "Changed" in the past month.

Jay Leno has a degree in communications from Emerson in Boston and he did pretty well. Can you tell jokes?
Poli-Sci unfortunately is what I call a "waitress/waiter degree."
Every other waitress has a degree in Poli-Sci, or Psy, Sociology, etc.
And now I'm beginning to see waitresses- bartenders with degrees in Bus Admin! Now that's scary! (I have a degree in Bus. Admin.)
The last I heard we're hiring school teachers here in Horry Co. S.C. in the Myrtle Beach system and others.
The pay isn't that great but it's a job with benefits and housing here is *half* the cost or less than up North and much better weather and it's a great place to live with 3,200 restaurants, 110 golf courses, 60 miles of warm water sand beaches and the people are very nice! A slower paced, less pressure life than up North.

Ahhh... littlesarbonn, you should have taken the position in Missouri.  [&:]

As for finding a new teaching position, I would recommend Georgia.  Free college education is offered here for any student graduating from a GA high school with a B grade average, so long as that average is maintained while in college.  Free technical school is offered to any one year GA resident.

You might check to see if other states have similar programs.

Yeah, I so wish I would have taken that job in Missouri. This has been a nightmare here.

I am sorry to hear that, but I do understand that Korea sounds much more exciting than Missouri.  But as I said before when you were deciding, Missouri really is a beautiful state and much more progressive than it's sleepy reputation shows.

Anyway, I'm also serious about Georgia.  I'm not sure what the typical status is for open teaching positions, but on one site alone I found 300 open positions in Georgia as of today.  With tuition provided for by the state, I don't believe colleges are hurting for students... and where there's students, there's a need for teachers.

Become a barber or an undertaker.  No matter whether the economy is booming or busting people will always need a haircut and people will die.

I saw a news story last night on the job market and economy in Fargo, North Dakota. According to the story, there was no housing bubble in North Dakota and their banks didn't get swept up into the risky loan frenzy. They kept doing business as usual and, as a result, their economy is healthy and they have more jobs than people to fill them. Just remember to pack your long johns.

popeye1250 -> RE: Where should someone move to take advantage of a decent job market? (2/27/2009 11:34:45 AM)

Littlesarbonn, want to be a cop?
Horry County Police (pronounced "Oh-Ree") is always hiring!
They only start out at about $32k but again, you can buy a hell of a nice house here for $175k. The same house up North would cost $400-$800k depending on location.
Also, they are short of Paramedics by about 20 and they'll even pay your moving expenses! I don't know how much they make but it's probably fairly good money.
