Do not think what newspapers and magazines use to sell product is the majority of a group.  Due to our economy now... restaurants are FINALLY cutting back portions.. albeit still charging the same prices.  My belief in the obesity epidemic here is that are food is pumped with growth hormones that make the animals produce more and that action has come home to bite us in the butt.

I'm an American who eats only one meal a day.  If I do eat out, I take half of what I order home to make another meal.  I fight a weight problem due to eastern European genes :)  (No really.  After following my doctor's advice on diet and exercise.. he finally said that was the cause.  I'm not obese.. but I have to be mindful of what I eat to keep tabs on it all.  Just like my mother did and her mother before her.)

I think it's time for a new doctor.

Why are you so concerned over what other people do? If I had to list the greatest problems in the world today, somewhere along the line would be that people just won't mind their own damned business and let their neighbors, mind theirs.

Eating just one meal a day is hard on the metabolism, most would recommend several small meals per day. I happen to like three meals a day though.

I'm sorry, but that simply is incorrect.  I googled this and found that actually most sites have Latinos at a higher end proportionately of obesity than other ethnic groups in the US, with Asians being by far the least likely to suffer from obesity.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=17875273

"Obesity has reached epidemic levels, with nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population considered overweight or obese. Latinos have some of the highest rates of overweight, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle. Research from scientifically sound evidence-based interventions to reduce the disproportionate burden of obesity and its associated morbidity and mortality among Latinas is greatly needed."

I said healthy, not thin.

...and I said "relative to their economic status"

Whites do horrble, as a group, if you look at only poor whites.

....and health is only loosely correllated with weight. latinos have an abberantly low incidence of heart desease, as compared with other fatties.

...and healthy food doesn't make you thinner. It does make you more healthy, but 3500 calories is still 3500 calories.

....but the point was that being poor doesn't force fast food upon you. Areas lacking fresh food suffer from lack of demand do to preferences.

Fresh food is cheap.

I remember back in 1993 when I worked in a restaurant.A co-worker of mine who was around 40 went with her husband to his family home in Mexico for 3 weeks. She came back 18 pounds thinner and she said she ate plenty but it was all fresh and no hormones. It made me wonder what the heck is in our meat that she could go to Mexico and lose 18 pounds without trying.

I did the same thing in the UK, I didn't change my eating habits at all but I dropped like, 2 sizes in a month. And I'm a vegetarian so it wouldn't even have anything to do with the meat. I just wrote it off as high fructose corn syrup

Aynne88 -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/1/2009 7:06:22 PM)

I'm really not trying to disagree with you, it is just that the information on that seems to be at odds with what you are saying.

http://www.asonet.com/health/pdfs/0017_Latin_Diabetes_and_Heart_Disease.pdf

And I agree, thin does not always equal healthy, but obese or seriously overwieght generally does equal health problems at some point. 3500 calories is way too much for any one person to eat regardless, but again, 3500 calories of fast food is not a nutrional equal of 3500 calories of say fish and fresh vegetables.

The obesity epidemic is shared by whites and most of the other ethnicities in America. Wait and see, if this economic crisis continues, it will only get worse because it is cheap to go through the Golden Arches and fill up on the dollar menu no matter what culture or group you belong to.  Unfortunately, there is going to be a huge price to pay in the long run.

As to the OP, I think Americans have developed a taste for junk, instant gratification and really poor eating habits. Salt, fat and lack of exercise combined with giant portions and subpar food being so much cheaper than quality meals is really a shame. Kittin was right, when I was in Europe, people lingered over meals, enjoyed wine and conversations, and even if they were eating decadently, it was small exquisite portions of something like a phenomenal cheese, foie gras or even a decadent rich dessert. Wonderfully prepared fresh meals are a  thing of the past too, fewer and fewer of my peers are cooking, they are throwing together or "assembling" meals from boxes, cartons, packets and cans.  I mean, you can buy a whole chicken, with fresh vegetables and seasonings, and the ingredients to make a dinner salad to go with it for less than ten dollars, and it will serve 4 people. There is no excuse for such lazy attitudes towards health and cooking, we are creating a generation of overwieght unhealthy children, of all racial groups in this country.

Vendaval -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/1/2009 8:31:51 PM)

That is completely fine by me.  One local Western style restaurants and bakery had the extra plate charge of $3 or so for years because they served such enomorous portions.  We are talking 4 egg omelets, 1/3 pound burgers, biscuits and eggs smothered in gravy, etc.  I have split meals there with friends and still taken home enough leftovers for another meal.

Aynne, you sum up the contributing factors of this problem very well.

When I was a vegetarian, the most important insight I got was how we eat for pleasure, seemingly exclusively and not to provide our bodies with what they need to be healthy.

When I eat now,I still have that primary consideration. That doesn`t mean one needs to sacrifice the pleasure of eating to eat healthy(ier).

In my mind, there`s no doubt that we`re getting away from what our folks taught us about food.

I think much of that is due to calorie-dense foods being prevalent in Latino diets (Frijoles & tortillas in Mexico; Moros y Christianos in Cuba; Gallo Pinto in Costa Rica; fried plantains and pork in many Latino cultures), in combination with the US sedentary lifestyle. Texans are the fattest people in the US, and Tex-Mex is one of the most energy-dense "cuisines" on the planet. Combine that with the brutal heat and lack of public transportation, and one has a recipe for an obesity epidemic. My hypothesis, anyway. [:)]

Sir Daddy -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/1/2009 9:34:44 PM)

American's don't need excess.  Excess is sold to them as a product ideal.  Such it is in a consumer society.  Greed and Gluttony are gift wrapped as Accomplishment and Privilege.  That mindset permeates every facet of American culture...from business to our dunner plates...and they're all connected.

If a fast food joint cut portion size and charged the same, their customers would think they were being ripped off and the place would lose money.
If they cut their portion size and prices proportionally, they would make less money because of the smaller prices.

There are only two ways to increase profits; open more locations and/or increase prices.  And so the ubiquitous super-sizer menu was born.  They give you an extra three cents worth of food for a quarter.  And the stockholders are happy while everyone buys bigger pants.

Apparently, making their product better is simply not an option.

Not true, actually.

For any one average (height and build) person, maybe. My optimal weight's sustaining diet is actually around 3300 calories.

The rest of your post is right on the money though (and it wouldn't be that much in fast food, for sure)!

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 12:54:11 AM)

In regards to food, part of the problem is the advantage America has within the corporatocracy, that allows us to get more reasonable prices for a majority of what we consume...  I'm not here to complain about it given I wasn't born rich, and am glad I can afford just about anything I want, yet, one cannot help wonder about the possibility that some folks live horrible lives as a result.

Some countries don't have  more fat people because they do not have enough food, or most of the people cannot afford to buy as much food as Americans can...  It's unfortunate that quantity rarely equates to quality when it comes to food, but that is probably for another thread.    M
