I know credit one will, but they want a 70 dollar sign up fee and then they want a yearly fee of 70 dollars, and they will charge you 5 dollars a month to reach that 70 dollar yearly fee.

We've tried capital one, Discover, Walmart Discover, Bank of America* his bank* and we've tried my bank safe credit union

We ended up trying credit one. We want to raise his credit score, and so far the only way I know of doing that is to have a credit card and use it and pay it off responcibly.

If there are other ways of making your credit score grow with out a CC please feel free to tell us.

Yeah try RBS, they don't use the same credit checking agencies as others in fact they don't use credit checking agencies at all. Also since I'm a resident of the UK I'm also a shareholder in RBS and as such you debt is my pleasure.

LOL I love how you say your debt is my pleasure, FullCircle.

It's true most people do go into debt with credit cards, I am one of them, cause I was foolish but not all  CC users go into debt:)

And do you have the whole name for RBS?

I am not positive on this, but I do believe that paying bills on time will get the credit score back in a good standing, instead of getting another card when youre up the creek as it is...

Kyttyn, I'm up the creek not him hehe. Ok, well he's up the creek  by proxy cause some of the debt is money he owes me that I loaned him using MY card, but other than that he doesn't have any credit cards, or debt.

And yes paying your bills off on time, will help keep your rating good, if not grow it.

there are a few "Secure" Cards, that visa and other companies offer, they are easy to obtain, have very low limits and the interest starts at something like 40% apr
imo, you are better off doing almost anything else.

If you want to help your credit, also considering paying more than the minimum amount due every month.  I would not recommend adding debt to an already bad credit rating.  You will not have a premium rating and will have to pay more for the money you borrow.  Hopefully you've learned from this experience not do loan other people money, especially on your credit.

Well I have learned if I am going to loan people money be a stickler about them paying me back, because in the past, I've been like you pay me when ever you can no big deal, and really who but the most disciplined, is going to pay someone back asap when the person is not demanding payment asap.

As well as not loaning money, at all unless it's nessisary, and yeah sometimes it is nessisary.

We signed up with safe credit union for a savings account, and in 6 months if there's no problems with his account, IE he hasn't abused it  occurred big fee's and has fed it reasonably well, then they will consider giving him one. It's quite generous of them, they should of said no out right with out giving him the chance to prove himself, because his credit history is pure shit, and he was on a banks shit list, once upon a time for a 300 dollar fee he thought was payed and it wasn't and it shows.

There's also a time or two where a bill went to a collection agency cause he couldn't afford to pay it, and we're working on getting those resolved.

It depends on the bill. Paying your car note or mortgage on time every month will help, paying your cable, water or phone bill will not and while paying them on time will not help you, paying them late can hurt you if they end up in collections.  The only way to increase your credit score is by showing fiscal responsibility over a long period of time.  A couple of years of solid fiscal planning can get you back on the road to financial health, good credit and better terms on loans.

Also, some credit cards are better than others. American Express packs more wallop on the credit front than a Home Depot charge card. Avoid department store credit cards like the plague unless you can pay them off every month. They generally have very high interest rates even for those of us with excellent credit. If you do get a credit put a charge on it, pay above the minium but do NOT pay it off for three months. Revolving cards will grow your credit the fastest and if you keep just a small balance, you will pay a minimum in interest for those three months to help build your score. For example, if you put $100 charge on your card and the min payment is $25, pay $35 the first month, $35 the second month, then pay it off the third month and that will have a bigger impact on your credit score than paying the whole thing off in the first month even though you will pay a few dollars in interest for those first two months. People who pay off their credit cards do NOT generate any money for the credit card companies so they are more reluctant to extend further credit which means it is harder to raise your credit score.

There really are no short cuts to raising your credit score though. This is a case where time really heals all wounds but you have to make sure the bleeding has stopped first and that you don´t keep picking at the scab while it heals.

First thing to do is get rid of your credit cards (this includes debit cards)! Of course you still have to pay them off. Use cash for everything, that way you will be better able to keep track of your finances. If you have a checking account, use checks only to pay bills, nothing else.
Second, never lend money to anyone! That's what banks and credit unions are for. If the people asking you for money can't get it from them, that should immediately raise a red flag for you.

Next, if you want to improve your credit rating, take out small (very small) loans for items that you want/need (and can actually afford) that cost a couple hundred dollars (like a new TV). Pay off these small loans in a timely fashion. Doing this will go a long way to helping your credit score.

btw...as for the money you loaned him from your CC.....that is YOUR debt not his, and no such proxy debt will ever be recognized by anyone but you.

Yes, we're making sure to take care of the inuries and not pick open any sores, to use your analogy.

If a bill has gone to a collection agency in the past, but you did pay the amount owed, do you just have to wait a while for the collection agency ding to go away, or is there something specific you have to do, to get it off your record a bill went to  a collection agency?

Okay, explain to me how loaning someone money, with the possibility of ruining your credit is a necessity?  Let them go elsewhere, you don't have to give your money away.

I don't see using debit cards as a problem, it's the same as cash, and if you use them responsibly they're fine why should you get rid of them, other than the fact it lets you spend more than you may have on you. And I do happen to use mine responsibly, and so does Daddy. Now if you can't be responsible with them, are you really ready to be an adult?

Yes debt by proxy will never be recognized, by any one but us, and I'm not expecting it to be either. He knows he owes me money and he's paying me back the money.

The point was someone said don't add debt to debt, and he's not in debt, to any one other than me.

Well I guess the definition is in, what's necessary.

If he's your partner, and he has to pay 80 bucks for a tow home from the grocery store, since the car died* and he didn't have tripple a* that he doesn't have the 80 bucks for, and there's nobody else to help, and the other option is let the car sit in the parking lot, and make your bf walk home, I view it as necessary lol.

Loaning money will not always ruin your credit, and it hasn't ruined mine, but they do have to be good for paying youback and be responcible for the payments.

If a past owing is paid in full to a collection agency, then it is noted in your file though that will affect whether a credit card company will issue you a card. It depends on the policies of the individual credit card company on how far back they check your credit history. And each collection agency has their own procedures and policies regarding a closed file and it's a matter of asking them.
