<QR> Realistically, one risks very little getting on a webcam. They other user does not gain access to your computer or files, assuming you're using any of the big names in web-based communications. The idea of a safety tool is the person chatting looks like who you think they are (or the pictures are consistent). Other than that, nothing can be gained. I can be a tricky liar on or off the webcam, my willingness to show my face on one means nothing. It would be the same as getting on skype or ventrillo. Do I consider them safe tools? Yes. Do I think they help verify the moral value of the person opposite the screen? No. Edit: Keep in mind, if you're dealing with particularly unsavory people then a webcam can do you harm. Them seeing where your background is, what objects or view is behind you, can all help a social engineer put pieces together to eventually do one harm. Or, allow for some "Oh my god! how did you know that much about me!" when making judgement calls based on the white moulding and sky blue walls behind them. In short: Seeing them doesn't make them more trustworthy, and most of the time, showing yourself is harmless.
