Howdy, I've been looking around the message boards and I've begun to wonder something whenever i see a topic that gets alot of views or response really fast. it almost always( not every time but a lot of the time) to be becouse the post was a feeding ground for snarky comments. and it makes me wonder why that is. any opinions or thoughts?

It's hard to argue with intelligent, well thought out posts that don't attack people. So those kinds, when posted as musings, get a lot of reads but can't really get much more of a response than "You're right".

I'm as guilty as anyone else of taking easy potshots but stupidity deserves that. "Should I sit by the computer endlessly in case my online master of three days signs on or should I go make dinner for my family". People without common sense are just asking to be bitch slapped.

Depending on who of the regular posters is online at the time and the density of the OP, things can get snarky pretty fast. i really only use this discussion board and one other...but i hear from people who are more involved online that this board is no different than most others.

Some posters attract snarky comments because they have a history of being either a snarky poster themselves, or perhaps not accepting decent but contrary responses to their threads, or perhaps historically post inane or silly OPs and never revisit their threads.

Most of the time it is history driven, sometimes it is the attitude exhibited in the OP, some coming across as the fount of all knowledge, sanctimonious even, or the fact that it is number three in a series of multiple posts asking more or less the same questions in each. Then again it could be just another active topic on the difference between a sub and a slave, no need for another duplicate. You get the drift.

Some responders will always post snarky comments, it's all they know, others do so to be part of the crowd, and some do so on odd occasions because what a thread creator has posted has really pissed them off enough to actually get snarky.

Slow days can do it, boredom can bring out the snarks, a plethora of idiot threads can do it too.

What you also have to remember is that some people are amongst friends in threads where there seems to be an awful lot of snarking, where in fact all it is is good hearted ribbing that people looking in are not a party to, like in jokes between friends.

Snarks are just one type of person who posts here, and exists in the wider world too, web sites are just microcosms, and anonymous ones at that, and people should recognise that they have an off button, a block facility, and the ability to look at post histories and do a bit of research, and if they really are bothered that anyone has crossed the ToS here they can always complain.

Personally i try and just avoid the wrecks and carry on as if they didn't exist, though i have to admit that on a slow day some can be sort of entertaining. Bottom line, don't feed trolls and snarks!

There are people who simply can't help acting like children when someone posts something they don't agree with, or when someone they dislike posts in the forums. Unfortunately, they tend to swarm like fruit flies and when one posts, the others generally are not far behind. The days of the fruit fly here are numbered.

Typically the original post is worded in such a way to get a desired answer - and if the answer isn't the one wanted, things tend to go down hill.
We have had some very long threads where things got a bit noisey- but with a word or two of caution from the above poster - calmed down, and continued in a a relatively sane manner.

I have on occasion (yes, yes, it is true!) made the occasional snarky comment - and usually because of the moronic post, or the poster really pissed me off. But most of the posters here want to enjoy themselves and maybe learn something. Of course, when we hit the popcorn post, then the inevitable will happen. C'est la vie.

Ether works pretty well on fruit flies. We used it in genetics class.

Snark has become the acceptable speech of this time, for good or ill. This made me think of a NPR show I listened to a while back about David Denby's book on snark. Here's an interesting link for an articule in New York Books from the New York Magazine http://nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/53159/

I try hard not to be snarky with my post....really I do. It is difficult sometimes, though, given some of the topics that are floating around here lately. DesFIP said it best..."People without common sense are just asking to be bitch slapped." How many times can you read " Master says I should give up my family and move to him and live in his basement and not see the light of day...is that normal?" and not want to jump on the snark-train?
The times I do make intelligent, thoughtout replies to people I find they are usually lost in the sea of snark. Sometimes I dive in, but I'm learning it's better to just sit back and watch the show. Really...I'm serious about not diving in....really.

For some of us here with limited experience, snarkasm is the only path to enlightenment. Otherwise, we would have to read-only for several months, watching from the outside, growing lonely and resentful.

Snarkiness is a sign that one is using their emotion over their intellect. It's fun and self afirming to put down others. Go to Youtube and look at the clips of liberals and conservatives screaming at each other at various protests. Those people aren't there to make a political point (though they may think they are), there there to get an adreniline rush and to feel superior.

Here's what I don't get: when you try to get a point of view across by being nasty toward someone that someone doesn't focus on your argument, they focus on the fact that they are being mis-treated and your argument/posistion then becomes associated with the negative feelings. It's a total backfire.

I make no claims to immunity from this but to me one of the things that seperates humans from other animals is our ability to override our instincts and act rationally. Not that we do it very often, mind you, but we do have the ability.

I think one-track thinking is a magnet for criticism (certainly those are the OPs that lead me to jump in and say: "hang on a minute, are you sure?") Those posts that are thinly veiled attempts at engendering debate, yet scratch the surface and they tend to begin something like....."99% of people just don't understand".......and end......"but I'm in the 1% of course". The hypocrisy being that often the OP jumps in somewhere else on the thread and proceeds to deride the 'one true way' to salvation. A one-off post isn't much to write home about as everyone has an off day, but when there's a trend it's an altogether different matter. Being confident in a belief isn't really the issue; it's the inability to understand that there is an alternative point of view and, really, you're not that special. I think also that were the OPs that follow this line to back up their point of view when challenged, then that would be fair enough, but more often that not the OP takes the challenge as an affront and proceeds to veer away from the topic and onto the poster who has offered the challenge.

And, I'd estimate that this whole approach is wrapped up in power i.e. pushing the idea at all costs, which is self-defeating because it's nigh on impossible to avoid the evolution of ideas and perceptions.

Forgive me Madame 11 for I have snarked, I tried hard not to, but sometimes I forget where I am and it slips out, I just dont feeel like treating a comment with the contempt it deserves and and let it go.... and having a nice cup of tea instead, (which is a whole lot better for my mood)
I do try hard tho to keep it confined to offtopic and random etc.
