MsFlutter -> Trying new cuisine (3/9/2009 9:56:36 AM)

A big Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Mexico.  While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful.
He asked the waiter, 'What is that you just served?'
The waiter replied, 'Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are called Cojones de Toro, bull's testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!'
The cowboy said, 'What the heck, bring me an order.'
The waiter replied, 'I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy.'
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day.
After a few bites, inspecting his platter, he called to the waiter and said, 'These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday.'
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, 'Si, Senor... the bull does not always lose.'

**HA HA HA HA**

Having eaten Them before (Bull Testicles that is) if you can get past what you are eating you would be surprized how good that actually are.

Andrew Zimmern is who turned me on to rare foods and you would be surprized what is very tasty but because of the stigma put around it you would never know.

I will say this much for those of you who like Stinky Tofu......... Why? I cannot get around the fact that I am eating something that looks smells and tastes like something I already ate, vomited and then was served again.

And If you get the opportunity to eat Rocky Mountain Oysters or Prairie Puppies or whatever they may be called when you get there I suggest you try them, just tell yourself it is Beef Brisket and take a bite you will be pleasently surprizes.

Awful is another thing most people like until they find out what it is, Munedo is one such dish.

I draw the line at bugs. Otherwise.......I am up to trying most anything.

Testicles are pretty common eats at certain times of the year, here in rural farm country Iowa. A campout isn't complete without deep fried pig nuts.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/9/2009 10:57:43 AM)

Do they taste like Pork Loin?

I would imagine when deep fried they taste like cracklins, only meatier?

ETA: Crickets and Ants when chocolate Covered are actually good and apparently Meal Worms when fed only fruit and then pan fried are very tasty.

LaTigresse -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/9/2009 10:59:43 AM)

Actually they kind of remind me of a cross between fried, chicken gizzards and livers.

I know that there are some bugs that taste good, I just have never been hungry enough to want to get past the ICK!!! factor.

Really they have a strong Iron Overtone? Odd.

Other foods everyone should try

Squirrel
Snake
Frog.

And I cannot wait to try Guinea Pig I hear it is Awsome like dark suclent meat and very flavorful.

It's pretty common near where I live to go somewhere for a potluck type meal, that has all sorts of game. Usually in unmarked bowls. You never know what you are eating unless you ask.

One thing I really do not care for........bear.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/9/2009 11:34:06 AM)

I don't mind bear steaks but I agree the meat is often Musky and Tough.

It makes GREAT Stew Meat.

Oh, no, don't draw the line at bugs.  Two of the neatest things I ever ate were... well... Bugs.

One is "Honey ants".  Most of the ant is taken up with a sort of honeylike substance.  It tastes just like honey candy, and is a nice quick energy nibble.

The other was "Popcorn grubs".  In the village we stayed in the Yucatan, the kids collect these big fat white grubs (moth caterpillars) and they wash them in cold water, then put them on the edge of an open fire.  After an hour or two the grubs are cooked, and they taste and feel JUST like buttered popcorn.  The kids (and us guests) snacked on them all day.

Hate to be the one to tell you this.

Squirrel was good, good eating. I grew up on it.

American squirrels have been found to carry mad cow disease, and they are too small to get them truly clean of centrel nervous system tissue. They are no longer safe to eat. No one should be eating squirrel.

Sorry, cause squirrell was really, really good stuff. Rabbit is still safe, though, and frog and turtle and a whole bunch of other small game from my childhood.

All this time I lived in Iowa I never had a pig nut.
Maybe I need to expand my horizons!

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/9/2009 5:37:27 PM)

Bull testes in some parts are also known as Rocky Mountain Oysters.......

I guess that could depend on what you think of it.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/10/2009 7:53:51 AM)

I don't always know how to spell the things that I eat .... Sorry.

Offal can be good if prepared right but if it isn't it usually is awful.

This being the Humor section, I thought that it was intentional and found it funny.  Whooopsie on my part!

Not at all Aylee,

I am a Horrible Speller, I know a lot of words but the spelling of those words can at times be beyond me.

Seriously thogh thank you for pointing that out so I didn't continue to look like a moron when talking about it.

GoodFeathers -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/10/2009 11:57:29 AM)

My parents were always big on strange, rural delicacies.  I remember my dad lied to me about the hossenfeffer I had as a child and told me it was squirrel (since I didn't like squirrels at the time, but love bunnies).
He gave me chocolate candies that had a crunchy, juicy center that I also adored, and I found out later it was chocolate covered grasshopper.
And my mom lied to me about the Rocky Mountain Oysters...actually she didn't lie...she just sidestepped the question.  A lot.

My favorite is still the hossenfeffer.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Trying new cuisine (3/10/2009 12:01:10 PM)

Beef brisket, in the past two times I ate it  one time gave me horrible stomach cramping diarrhea and another gas and a stomach ache to kill. So I think I'll pass on anything called brisket, since eating it has unpleasant side effects on me, it would seem from the last 2 times I ate it.
