Friendship among women
A woman didn't come home one night.  The next morning she told her husband that she had slept over at a friend's house.  The man called his wife's ten best friends. None of them knew anything about it.

A man didn't come home one night.  The next morning he told his wife that he had slept over at a friend's house.  The woman called her husband's ten best friends.  Eight confirmed that he had slept over, and two said he was still there.

Hate to say it, but darchChylde's is especially spot on. When it comes to a man, there are many women who can be extremely and visciously competitive. That's why I just step aside and try not to become part of the carnage.

I've seen this in action on one of those Candid Camera sorts of programmes.  Two actors, one male, one female, pretend to be husband and wife in a shopping mall.  The "wife" marches up to the husband and bellows out "And where were you last night?" - whereupon the "husband" turns to any other man standing nearby and says "I was staying with him - this is my old schoolmate Stan!" -

And in each case, the entirely innocent man - who'd never seen the "husband" before in his life - would confirm this to the "wife".

Yet, the other way around?  Noooo.  The "husband" would demand to know where his "wife" was the night before, the wife would reply that she was "staying with Lucy - my old friend" - and the woman pointed out as the "wifes's" friend,"Lucy", would just dart off in embarrassment.

While I've lived in the US most of my life, I still can't understand gender-divide humor.   -- My woman friends are incredibly bright, confident and supportive.  They don't gossip nor compete with each other.  Maybe it has something to do with the people one attracts into their life.  This reminds me of a quote:

"Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people."

To discuss ideas absent context is hollow; events or people without ideas to provide meaning, shallow.

Fancy that.  It astonishes me what sort of humour will travel.  I heard that Benny Hill went down really well in the US - and I couldn't really fathom that.  Yet, Frankie Howerd made almost no purchase at all. 

Of all things - Are You Being Served?  Astounding.  Maybe because it had all the silliest English caricatures rolled into one show?  (Quite well done caricatures, admittedly)?

My my, now this is what I would call a high-handed attempt to show how small minded we were to find humor in our every day lives and discuss it.  Exactly where is it divisive?  Male and female were laughing together equally; at least until you came along.  We are not laughing to make anyone less, but to brighten our own days, if it does not serve the same purpose for you; you don't really have to insult everyone else here.

Thanks for the quote, it reminded me of something that I thought the first time I read it.  Even the greatest of minds can make an ass of themselves sometimes.

As far as the company you keep, it's true.  Competitive people tend to surround themselves with other competitive people and on the whole, women are far more competitive than men in the relationship arena.

I just love MOG! I cried when Archie popped the question to Lexie. lol
And of course, Monty Python! Also, Fawlty Towers.
