popeye1250 -> Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 5:00:47 PM)

I've been working out like an animal at the gym for the last month or so and my gut just keeps getting bigger!
It should be going down but it's not.
Now I'm thinking of "going to the mattresses" and fasting for a few days or a week.
How many days is optimal? What types of liquids should I drink and how much?
I'm pissed!
Plus, I quit smoking 10 days ago but that doesn't bother me too much anymore.
And I haven't been eating that much more than usual.
Instead of walking my usual 3 or 4 miles on the beach I'm going to step it up to 6 miles.
Any medical people in here with experience in fasting?
I'm up to 240 pounds and they said my "ideal" weight should be 209.
A big fat shit!!!  A fuckin' Whale belly!!!
This gut is stretching out my shirts now fer cripes sakes!
I want to take a knife to it!
I figure if I can go for 5 days that'll shrink down my stomach so that I can hold less when I eat.

My uncle had a similar problem. It turns out it was hormonal.  They gave him a couple of shots and it disappeared within a few weeks.

[sm=waves.gif]right here!!

My advice is do not do it. There are multiple health issues associated with STARVING (fasting is the PC term) but the one that would interest you in the here and now; you are going to put your body into starvation mode. Your metabolism is going to shut down, holding on to every calorie it has as it thinks you are starving it...thus making any weight loss much more difficult.

domiguy -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 5:12:22 PM)

You probably need to introduce some aerobic activity. the walking probably doesn't kick up your heart rate enough to burn the calories and thereby remove  the "gut."

Fasting is not the answer.  It is the reason that diets fail.  It only signals to your body to hang on to your precious fat.

I quit smoking on Jan 5th.  Took the opposite path.  tackled the smoking first not denying my hand to mouth affliction and piled on the food.  Now it is time for the gym.  Starting slowly and building up to some serious time on the stair master, lifting, jogging and swimming are solid aerobic excercises.

Just be aware that things that are easy like riding a stationary bike are "easy" because the pay off is low.  If you have probs with joints and such. Get in the pool. take your time and try to build up to at least 45 minutes of active excercise...Also lift weights.  Building muscle mass continues to burn fat even when not lifting...Drink lots of water and eat a number of smaller meals through out the day.  this lets your body know that there is not going to be a shortage of food or water and there is not need to retain your tubbiness.

One fat guy to another lol.  6'3" currently around 225....fighting, comfortable weight should be around 205.  If I stay at it I might just be wearing that speedo in mid May...It is a breathtaking sight.

Well Holly, what would you suggest?
A fast pickup truck and a long rope?

I have been told it is never good to fast, in terms of weight loss bty my dr's and by the nutritionists, and by the health educators who're teaching the health education classes I have attended. Fasting just signals to your body that times are lean and the body needs to buckle down and save every last little bit of fat and energy it can conserve.

subfever -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 5:19:36 PM)

I agree. Don't fast. Eat 4 or 5 small meals a day. Continue your exercise program, but do so moderately and mix weight resistance with aerobics.

If you can afford it, go see a Naturopath. See if you have any food intolerances that should be avoided.

personally, i am clueless. If you were saying that your overall weight loss was at a standstill i would suggest 5-6 small meals per day and increase your water intake. But you want to focus on the abdomen. The only thing i can suggest is to make sure your walk consists of an aerobic heart rate (120 per minute, i think) for at least 20 minutes. Also, you are going to a gym...is there a trainer you can talk to?

not quite helpful..i know

popeye1250 -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 5:39:30 PM)

I do both the treadmill at 3 mph with a 3% grade and my heart rate is about 125.
Also a weight lifting program , full body workout, on 12 differant weight machines.
The trainer is a muscle guy and all he tells me is "more weight."

sirsholly -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 5:41:25 PM)

how about more sit ups?

outlier -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 6:20:49 PM)

Popeye,

There is a doctor who has a show on PBS about this.

Follwing his program worked for me and has worked for others.
And will reduce you gut.

I will put some links together with a full post and then add it here later.

Get ready to start ignoring the front of the packages when you buy
what you eat and to start reading the labels. People, including food
companies will lie to you to take your money. Often the most effective
lie is one of omission.

You could go vegetarian or even vegan for a month or two.  I gained about 20 extra pounds about 4 years ago, and it wasn't coming off.  But I went and visited a friend of mine 3 years ago, and she hardly ever ate meat or dairy products.  She also didn't have any sugar or food with sugar.  I pretty much eat what my host is eating when I stay at someone's place.  I didn't even mean to lose weight, but I lost 15 pounds in less than a month just eating that way.

Since smokes have went up over 5 dollars here, I am planning on quitting this month.  I plan on laying off of fried foods, red meat, sugar, and white flour for a couple of months.  I don't want to get fat, and I can eat that way.

Vendaval -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 7:54:07 PM)

I think a check up with your personal doctor, a nutritionist and a different trainer would be good.  How do you feel overall?  What are your energy levels like?  Anything else getting bigger or smaller?

winterlight -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 8:30:43 PM)

Anybody done that px90 or whatever it is called. has that helped?

pahunkboy -> RE: Fasting, any medical people in here? (3/11/2009 8:41:49 PM)

how many ounces of water did you drink today?

how much HFCS did you ingest today?

Add fresh garlik to your salads.  It sounds like bloat.  This occurs when the colon and intestines are not flushed out.   Other then that- HFCS and sugars are not your friend.

If you drink soda pop- even diet- that goes against you.

Be mindful even on fruits that sound good- that no HFCS had been added in the processing.

Also- mayonaise is an extreme NO NO.

Fast food and processed foods are to be avoided.

If you are abnormally bloated- then it could be wise to have your blood checked for health problems.

Popeye,

The doctor that I watched was Michael F. Roizen. He had at
least two different programs on PBS. They were run during the
fund raising weeks. About 2001-2 somewhere in there.

Long story short, he eventually hooked up with the doctor who
is always on Opera named Dr. Oz. But the essential elements of
the program he advocates were in place in those PBS shows which
were available on DVD. He has also written or co-written many books.

Follow the links for more information and please do your own research.

Briefly, there is an organ called the omentum which is in your lower
abdomen. It should be thin, almost like lace. When you eat the wrong
foods it bulks up collects fat and causes "the belly". This is bad for
health as well as cosmetic reasons.

As I said this program of diet and much less exercise than you are doing
at this time, has worked for me and for everyone else I know who has used
it and stayed with it. I am 6 foot, weigh 180. I walk 2 miles on flat ground
in about 40 minutes, five times a week. Other than that I just do my chores.
I have lots of energy, good circulation and excellent blood pressure. All
metrics have improved since I started eating as he recommends. Basically
it is just avoiding bad foods and disguised bad foods, and walking.

By all means consult with your own professionals. But please also investigate
this man's recommendations before you make your final choices. Best of
luck with it.

Dr. Roizen's Bio:

A review and synopsis of one of his books

edited to add: Congradulations on Quitting Smoking!!! Best thing you could have done for yourself.
