I always use my real name.. I tend to stay away from scene names  -- I think even the first time you and I exchanged anything I left my first name... even on name badges at events and other situations.. I always just use my first name, no honorific -- except once when I forced to use Mistress as I was judging the M/s Conference here in DC...

I remember when you could google my whole name and it came up on the Leather Leadership program one year.. I worried a bit about it, but haven't since...

Nicknames and honorifics are two different ballgames in my opinion. On the boards I have no issue with using someone's full screen name, they aren't in my personal comfort zone and remain just a name on the screen. But email is a more personal form of contact and I remember once writing to a lady whose post resonated with me and I wanted to thank her for such an erudite, articulate and insightful post. It was nice of her to extend courtesy by replying to me and not using a standard reply but then had me cringing when she signed off as 'Goddess'. Eeek! I am not part of their power-exchange relationships and while they may be a Goddess in their small world, I don't go in for ego-stroking sycophantic ring-kissing.

By all means sign off using a nickname of 'Sherk', 'Jakeyboy' or 'Shamu' if you aren't comfortable extending your real name and I'm cool with using that nick in return as quite often people will refer to me as 'Morri', (my own boy's nickname is used by all his friends and he's had it since he was a wee boy) but don't try to instill a hierarchy between us and expect me to address you by a title that's a creation of your online/offline persona. Whenever I have attended a local event and have introduced myself to people I have recognised as fellow posters on various sites, I will say, "Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you, I am Janie although you may have seen me posting as 'Miss Morrigan' on the boards."

By the way,  the 'at night, the ice weasels come' part of your sig, M4a, always raises a chuckle. Love seeing it.

i actually have a real life nic that i use on my e-mail someplace else.Everyone back home knows me by this and on facebook as well so it just made sense to do it that way.But not knowing the proclivities of all my friends and family back home,i have preffered to go with chezzy here. And that was taken from a movie called "The Pope of Greenwich Village"..or i should say i tweaked it a bit but it basically means the same thing in slang terms.Mistress Cat knows my real name of course and i'll leave it at that.

Years ago my screen name was redbtmAngi.  I had gotten off the computer for 8 yrs and when i returned,  it was taken in one form or another.  I couldnt think of anything that was taken already, so i went with this simple one.
In the past year,  i met someone vanilla who told me i reminded him of an old friend named Willow.  Then not too long ago someone mentioned that would be a great name for me.  Wonder if i should change it to that one.

A handful of CM folks know my first name from exchanges in email. The local scenesters call me by my first name. Those that know me from real life AND CM call me Ms. F.

I’ve been know to use both. I really should just always use my real first name since it’s so common. (I think its in the top 10 baby girl names when I was born, my parents feel a bit guilty about it now.) The one thing that I never give out is my last name since it’s so very uncommon and I’m easy to find with it.

I do sometimes sign using my screen name but I do feel that’s a bit impersonal therefore the reason to have out a fake name. Plus I like to have another level of security with the internet you just never know about some people. My fake name really isn’t that fake. It comes from my middle name.

I have no problem at all using my first name and have mentioned it often on here. I don't run around demanding anyone use anything else. LaTigresse was created specifically for this site. I was talking to the woman that was my submissive at the time I was creating the profile and musing what to use. It was totally her idea, I liked it, and voila'!

Anything before here was either under the combo name I created, using the names of my two dogs at the time.....mabella......or my favourite for very special people, my full given name, first and last.

Otter has been a nickname for many years, though until recently it has fallen out of use.  My Lady uses her first name freely, and so when we introduce ourselves at functions it has typically been with first names.  Otter, however, is the name I am using for a new set of kinky art that I am doing.

I only use my real name when necassary. I love my scene name and prefer to be called by it, I will tell a friend my real name but ask that they call me sens or sensura whatever they prefer. I just dont like my christian name and am glad to be called by a name I actually like lol.  My final thought  never give your last name online  thats just common sense

Just FYI - my Westy goes by his screen name "West" so much that people think it IS his real name.  His real name is actually quite common and it avoids confusion for him to use the less common one.

I've always been Francine, though lots of my CM pals call me some variation of Hib.  OLD friends remember when I was Aunt Strict, and call me Auntie!

Ha!  OLD friends of mine still call me "Sugar".  My original mIRC net nick was "Sugarfoot".  Nope.  Actually had nothing to do with foot worship.  It's a deep south endearment like "Sweetheart".  When I moved from the 'vanilla kinky' channels to the BDSM ones, I was "SugarHell".

Ahhhhh.... Now you guys are gonna make me even more depressed.  I miss Vodka, Bildo, YesYesYes, EZLiving even PattheHat.

Do you always use your scene name?  How many people in the scene know your real name?

My scene-name is the chosen name I've used for years before entering the public BDSM scene... I've been Rumpus since about the mid-90s, I guess.  My birth-name isn't a secret, it's just not preferred; it's used only one bills/official documents and with those that knew me before I took up another name, about 5 people or so.

So yes, the name I give at BDSM functions is the name I use "all" (99+%) of the time.  Back in Augusta, I think about 4-7 folks were told my birth-name at one point or another as it came up in conversation.  Two people here (+ whoever sees my Sanctuary paperwork) know it.

The closest I really have to a "scene name" is when I add "Miss" to it for use by those who are submissively inclined towards me.

Wait a minute.... you mean Rumpus Parable isn't your real name?

Shit. Another illusion shattered. This world becomes a more boring place every time I turn around.

My scene name is simple—there were an average three Deborah/Debby/Debs in every one of my school classes, sometimes as many as five. I was Debby until college, got tired of trying to explain to the world that "Debby with a Y" does not equal "Debbye" [no shit, that's how t'idjut filling out forms for my Red Cross Swimmer's course took it down]; then I was Deborah throughout college, two marriages, and three careers; and, finally, after I figured out that my stroke had retired me, I decided it was time to stop fighting the entropy of stupidity compounded by ignorance ["No, Deb'-o-rah, like in the Bible—two and a half syllables, seven letters, doesn't rhyme with zebra"] and simplify my life while lowering my blood pressure, and became Deb (even the poor sods "educated" by fonix have trouble mis-spelling Deb). And the first thing I encountered in our local kinky community was a long-established lower-case sub "deb". So as soon as I had fully identified myself as domina, I chose an alliterative additional name to go before the Deb, for distinctiveness and to hint at my nature. I just love melting my subs with painful pleasures.

Fortunately, only the kinky gatherings need my legal name, so I don't have to fight the mis-spelling factor much within the scene.

Lady Delilah Deb

Oh my!  Have to commiserate with you on that one.  My maiden name is odd and difficult to spell as it is not pronounced the same as it looks.  I as SO HAPPY to marry a man named "Gill".  So short.  So common.  So easy to spell!  You would never believe the number of people who called me "Hill".  *eyeroll*  I divorced that one and married another man with a simple, common name.  They get that one wrong also.  Doesn't matter how easy your name is, they will still get it wrong.

Even my bloody first name!  Susan.  How can you screw that up???  They do.  I've even been asked if that was short for Suzanne.  *heavy sigh*

Just thanking everyone for the interesting replies.

One thing that has crossed My mind since I wrote the original.  I wonder how much of the scene name versus real name (for those of us who have different ones) is influenced by the internet?  This name was pretty much given to Me, so when I joined this site or others, it was just as easy to create the screen name as the same.  I've found it much easier as I've met people that I either knew from the internet first, or I meet in person and then want to find Me on the net later, it makes sense to be going by Lady Pact.

Reversing this as to what I call people, there's a pretty good chance that, if I'm familiar with their screen name from a site like this, it's the name I've gotten used to for that person.  Sometimes, it's just easier to remember one name, rather than two.

I think I tend to combine that along with the fact that some people prefer their anonymity in BDSM settings, and that some names are actually given or leather names, I tend to stay on the side of caution.
