Master had me tied to the headboard last night with soft nylon rope tied around my wrists and then to the headboard. The ropes were not tight enough to limit circulation and I think I could have even slipped my hand out had I really wanted to. However, through the intensity of the scene, I pulled against the rope and my thumb went numb. I assumed I had restricted the nerve a bit and it would be fine after the ropes were removed. However, when I woke this morning my thumb was still numb (numb enough I could poke it with a pin and not feel it). Has this happened to anyone else? How long should I wait for feeling to return before becoming concerned. I was in the ropes no longer than 30 minutes total so it's hard for me to believe I could have done any permanent damage but 8+ hours of numbness has me concerned. I should mention that I have slight carpel tunnel in my hand and that may complicate things.

You probably haven't done permanent damage but nerves can be delicate things. If it's still an issue by tomorrow, go see your doctor.

I have had this occur several times. It really does not take much to cause damage to a nerve and they tend to take some time to heal. I have had numbness for weeks to a month after, although most instances resolve within a few days.

I also have carpal tunnel in both hands, corrected with surgery if you want to call them corrected. I would recommend using wide cuffs, preferably suspension type cuffs. It seems I always develop a problem after using rope or other thin restraints.

Mistoferin: thanks for that advice. You're absolutely right...a wider cuff would put less concentrated pressure on those delicate nervy points in my wrist. So smart! The numbness lessened today so I'm sure it will be alright in a few days.
Thanks so much for such useful advice!

Rope Bondage isn't simple and should never be taken lightly.
Nerve damage: If there is tingling or numbness in the limbs afterwards either right after the bondage comes off,or later on that lasts for more then a few minutes, there may be damage to the nerves. This problem is particularly likely when weight or stress is placed on the wrists, so it is best to set up your bondage to avoid this situation. If you have continuing numbness, tingling, " Funny feelings" or pain after bondage, see a doctor.
Rope bondage should never be to tight, but it should never be to loose either. Even tension is the goal of good rope bondage.
As you seem to be someone who is prone to nerve damage. I think that wrist bondage with rope is something you should avoid. Playing with wide leather cuffs is a far safer option for you, particularly if your someone who likes to struggle while bound.
I also think that you should never keep your limbs above the heart for more then 20 mins. even if you can tolerate it for 30 mins.

typesgirl, the nylon rope was it a single turn around your wrists or did your Master make more then one? Bondage isn't something that is very easy and should always be firm but not to tied that it shutdown your nervesystem. If you work a lot with computers or do other work that could couse a carpal tunnel syndrome you should better use leather wristbands with one or more D rings that can be tied to the bodybondage or try a bigger rope and more turns around the wrist.

Anti-inflamatories (Advil) can also reduce the swelling around the nerve. They also reduce bruising, and soreness the next day.

Just a thought. Hope you're all healed up!

I'm also susceptible to numbness (probably from weak circulation) and had a tingling/numbness in my thumb for about 4 months after a rope bondage scene. I absolutely love rope, though, so I just try to remain aware of tightness, placement, thickness of rope - it helps to wrap at least 4 times around wrists and ankles so there isn't too much pressure on a small spot. I agree with the hands above the heart thing; my hands will fall asleep if my arms are raised above my head for too long, regardless of whether I'm bound.
