Termyn8or -> Cold (3/16/2009 11:08:28 PM)

Lately I am always cold. Today I got sick of it and turned the heat up, it is now 83F (28.3C) in here and I finally feel just a bit warm, just a bit. This despite the fact my gas bill was five hundred bucks last month !

Now I could attribute this to coming down with something or whatever, and I am not over it, I was sick a couple weeks ago. Slept twenty hours a day and ate nothing, no appetite at all. But I tend to think I am over that, I do feel better. This is more of a chronic condition which has been going on for some time, and by that I mean it gets worse every year. Yes year. This costs me alot in energy, others keep their house at 60 because it costs so much, here I am at 83 and I still want more !

To compound the problem, in the summer when I finally get warm I stay that way, and I will run the AC until the place is down to about 62, that satisfied me last year but now I am not sure it'll do because this keeps getting worse and worse.

Now this is something that I don't think doctors can really do anything for, what would you do ? Am I lacking some nutrient or something ? This is costing me a fortune. And the fact that I want it so cold in the summer indicates that it is something with me, I am the common denominator. At 83F I still have two jackets on and have no desire to take them off. But in the summer, at 65F I want it colder.

Has anyone noticed this in themselves or others, and if so was the cause found ? The only other physiological factor that might be of use is the fact that even though I eat very little and drink alot less, I am still gaining weight. Slow but sure the gut grows. I don't want that.

Any ideas ? I have no plans to go see a team of brain surgeons about this, and really it might just be part of the aging process. Is it manopause ? I am 48 so that is not impossible.

Also bear in mind that anything like this comes right out of my pocket. I don't participate in insurance. ( except for house insurance )

Anemic? Sure hormones are a possibility. Your diet sounds horrible. One needs food and fluids to maintain good health, stable blood glucose levels to avoid hypoglycemia and to fight off other ailments. It may be hard for any doctor to figure out your issue if you are not eating and rehydrating properly to begin with. Secondly, yes this very well could be hormonal. Sorry, either way and hope you are able to resolve it. :)

What kind of lifestyle do you lead, Termy? Often, when a person feels extremely cold all the time there's a circulatory issue and a sedentary lifestyle, then there's anaemia and a whole host of other ailments it could be attributed to. The only way to find out is to visit your general practitioner. Sometimes a person just has to suck it up and pay out those greens and I suggest you do so very soon. It's a vicious cycle, not feeding the body enough fuel, so therefore not inducing enough energy, the body becomes sluggish.

It's not true what they say about fat chicks not feeling the cold. I am usually shivering with the cold when everyone else around me is sweating because I have the heating cranked up (with ridiculously high heating bills). I never used to feel the cold, but then, I was always running around everywhere and these days I'm not so active. As for the diet - I eat bird sized meals, very small and only three a day, yet the weight is piling on too. Drinks-wise, I drink lots of water, sometimes with lemon juice in, and just two cups of tea a day. I do not drink carbonated crap. Yet the weight piles on, coupled with indigestion and constipation. I've had a digestive issue since I was a child, docs always put it down to dyspepsia caused by stress. More recently, however, I ate a small meal one day and couldn't understand why my stomach became so painfully bloated, it remained that way for four days despite the fact I ate nothing in three of those days other than a clear broth. The pain that ensued resulted in a visit to the doctors who sent me to hospital immediately. I was diagnosed with gall bladder issues which have made my liver swell beyond it's protective 'capsule'. If the liver isn't functioning correctly, the body is reabsorbing the waste, which is why I'm putting on weight and not losing it. So, do please get yourself checked out.

there are alot of reasons to feel cold, the most common is low blood volume. Just what you do not want to hear but here it comes anyway....see a doctor for some bloodwork

MasterSlaveSEVA -> RE: Cold (3/17/2009 4:15:38 AM)

As others have mentioned, you made need some blood work done.  It could be a thyroid issue with the temperature and weight symptoms.

The blood work will more than likely let your doctor know if anything is wrong.  Just be sure to let them know of your symptoms and how long its being going on, don't leave anything out even if you think it is irrelevant.

From a financial point of view, see a Doctor.
In the long run you will save on your heating bill.

My suggestion to you since you are against seeing regular MDs is to see one that is Naturopathic....in other words, one who can do the bloodwork but will offer a natural approach for healing.
Or see a good practioner in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Low thyroid can actually kill you and anemia can make daily functioning extremely difficult.

If you know what is wrong it can then be fixed.
Would you consider that your body is a complicated machine and machines get off kilter.
You need to see a 'mechanic' to run a diagnostic on your systems.

Termy....break down and see a doctor, please?

Termyn8or -> RE: Cold (3/17/2009 1:11:42 PM)

FR

I think angel might be onto something here. I have often wanted to get a full blood workup on me, and a few others with symptoms that defy normal logic. At least for me I mean a full workup, I don't care if it costs a grand (it well may) because I want to know mineral levels and all that.

However I don't need someone to check my reflexes with that little hammer and load me up with pamphlets on how to quit smoking and all that crap. I will also not take drugs, which knocks most "allopathic" MDs right out of the box.

But the fact is I don't want to pay for a guy to tell me what I already know. I know my breathing is less than ideal, I know that my resting heartrate is well over 80 and I know that my BP is borderline hypertensive. I will however, pay to find out things I don't know. Any ideas along those lines ? I am in Cleveland, but really I would have no problem drawing some of my own blood and mailing it off for a test. I want to know what I want to know, and to come to my own conclusions.

Really, is there a place where I can just send in a bottle of my blood and they can tell me for example if I have a magnesium deficiency or whatever ? That would be ideal for me.

You can't go to a doctor and tell him what, and what not to tell you.

He's going to check you over, run the tests he wants to run, and give you his opinion. If it makes you cranky, drop the money to go see a specialist, or do what thousands of rich middle aged white woman do, and doctor hop until one gets sick of them, and gives them what they want.

You have several health related posts up asking absolute strangers on the internet what you should do- but you won't trust someone who's gone to school for years to say "Hey, your BP is crap, you need to fix it."

DeviantlyD -> RE: Cold (3/17/2009 10:42:44 PM)

Going only by the symptoms you are describing, it sounds a lot like hypothyroidism. You really should see a doctor, as everyone else here is suggesting. Yes you will get lectured, but any worthy physician would be remiss in just letting those sorts of health issues slide by without saying a word about them. But what he/she should also do is get to the cause of your symptoms. WIth such blatant symptoms, I can't see a doc not being able to figure it out. And if it does end up being hypothyroidism, you're going to have to take medication for it. There is no way around that one, unless you discover a means of boosting your metabolism in a safe and healthy way. And if there was a readily available means of doing so, more people would be doing it.

I wish you well and hope you get answers (and relief) soon!

it doesn't work that way, Termy. Certain tests may require certain additives to the blood tubes (the tops on the tubes are different colors for a reason) and those blood samples have to be handled in different ways

BlackPhx -> RE: Cold (3/18/2009 10:12:32 AM)

Term..I agree with Deviantly..it sounds an awful lot like hypothyroidism, something that is remarkably easy to deal with once diagnosed. It can however be many other things or combination of things. Go see a Doctor, let him/her order the tests you need give you the diagnosis and THEN decide what you want to do about it. It's better than changing your name from Termyn8or to Termyn8ed.Talk to friends and get a recommendation for a good doctor..or just pick one and go..but GO.
