Another step forward for gay rights.  The rest of the article and a video are available by clicking on the link below.

"Sources: US to sign UN gay rights declaration"

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration will endorse a U.N. declaration calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality that then-President George W. Bush had refused to sign, The Associated Press has learned.

U.S. officials said Tuesday they had notified the declaration's French sponsors that the administration wants to be added as a supporter. The Bush administration was criticized in December when it was the only western government that refused to sign on.

The move was made after an interagency review of the Bush administration's position on the nonbinding document, which was signed by all 27 European Union members as well as Japan, Australia, Mexico and three dozen other countries, the officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Congress was still being notified of the decision. They said the administration had decided to sign the declaration to demonstrate that the United States supports human rights for all."

Thank you so much, Vendaval, for posting this notice.  As a queer womyn, i have been able to breathe just a bit easier since Obama was elected.  i no longer feel that my bedroom will still be under the watchful eyes of the government.  And who knows?  Maybe as a group, queer men and womyn may wind up having all the equal rights afforded us by the Constitution of the United States.  That's a thought that almost boggles my mind..........

I also want to add my thanks for this post and link Vendaval. It is another positive step towards equal rights given to all of humanity. I do give my praise to Obama for having the open mindedness to step up and sign that declaration. Being a Canadian and having many rights given in the past several years, we also have to help our fellow LGBT memebrs who unfortunately haven't been accorded the same. My dream and wish is to see the US shortly follow suit with Canada and the UN. Equal rights for All has no borders.

Er, it was a non binding resolution ya know.

And more to the point, the vote on the resolution was held back in December. Even without the united states it passed. What good is an enforcement that comes after the resolution has already succeed? Isn't that a bit like some Hollywood celebrity coming out stating a month from now and saying 'I support the nomination of obama'. The voting is already over so what impact would it have?

But even if the resolution wasent non-bonding, and even if this publicity stunt had come before the vote instead of after ..... do you actualy honestly think a UN resolution is going to change anything? Iran was hanging homosexuals in the public square but then as of today will say "No! No! Not a UN sesolution! Anything but a UN resolution! We promise not to publicly execute homosexualy any more. Please please please, anything but a UN resolution!"

No, Hungry Tiger, i don't think a UN non-binding resolution is going to change anything for me in the United States.  The fact that you are questioning whether it will, and arguing against any improvement it might bring to the queer community is a statement about your  personal understanding, or lack thereof,  of the situation of queers in America.

It's also interesting that your profile is not found when i clicked on your name and searched for it......hhmmm......i don't know, maybe you turned your profile off.

Anyway, what IS important is that President Obama signed this UN resolution where as the previous Republican President, as the only leader of all free world countries would not to do so.  Just shows how wrapped up in the concept of theocracy the Republican party has become.  It's simply more and more difficult for me to reconcile today's Republican party to the one that Abraham Lincoln belonged to......

It is Obama, and the Democratic-controlled Congress, who are the ones i think are going to change my life for the better as a queer in America.  And his signing of that particular document, binding or no, shows how serious he is about "life, liberty and justice for all."

edited for typoitis.....

.....and arguing against any improvement .....

If it actually was improvement, I would be arguing for it. But its not improvement. Its theater.

Let me make a comparison. Today in the united states, airport security is following general the same 'Its just theater' approach. It doesn't actually improve security, it just provides the illusion of security so that some people will have a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside. Now if I speak out against such a system, it does not mean I am arguing in favor of people being in danger?

This is the problem with either/or thinking. Assuming there are two and only two possibilities. One one side is publicity stunts, on the other side is absence of progress. Just because Im againt publicity stunts, that dosent imply that I am oposed to any progress. There is a third option and that is wanting real actual progress instead of some lame dog and pony show.

If you wanna run around believing that getting people to feel a nice warm happy feling inside is more important to gay rights than actual measurable progress, then by all means knock yourself out. But please dont acuse people like me that would prefer actual progress over theater as being 'clueless' and 'uninformed'.

He wasent.

The US was the only 1)major 2)western nation not to sign .....  That's a far cry different than only leader in the free world who wouldn't sign. Russia China and India didn't sign either. Thought it could be argued that russia and china are not 'free world' they are certinaly major countries.

Even among countries in the western hemesphere the US wasent unique. Peru, Guyana, Suriname, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama all did not sign.

On top of that, The US only abstained from signing. There was also another statement directly oposing such a resolution that was signed by 57 UN members including Fiji, Egypt, both Afghanistan and Iran (so much for spreading democracy? Eh?), Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Solomon Islands, and even the western hemesphere nation of Saint Lucia. I would be a lot more possed at these nations that were activily fighting againt it than some nation that remained netural on the matter.

And on top of THAT, the US did sign the 2008 decleration of gay rights put forth by the OAS. So the ~evil bush dictatorship~ did support a feel good dog and pony show document for gay rights. Just not THAT one.

Wanna lecture me some more about how it is *me* that is uninformed?

I think snopes said it better than I ever could ...... From http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.asp "Expressions of outrage are fine and good, but if they don't reach someone who can have impact on the core problem, they're wasted. Thus, a petition that doesn't clearly identify the intended recipient may have some small value as a way for its signers to work off angst, but as an instrument of social change it fails"
