YourhandMyAss -> Do you have to have any special religious connections to do missionary work? (3/18/2009 3:25:05 PM)

I see all those commercials for third world countries complaining about hunger and filth and poor conditions of the kids, so please sponsor a child, your donation will help and blah blah blah, and I wonder, wouldn't it be better to have missionaries and stuff who are not pushing the religious angle come in and help build things and make it better?|

And how do people who want to go into places like Biloxi Mississippi, and natural disaster destroyed area's and third world countries, find out about how to do that?

Missionaries by definition are religious people who do good deeds as part of spreading the word about their religion. Nonreligious good deed doers usually join the Peace Corps. Or donate time to Habitat for Humanity.

Is the peace corpse, like the army where you have to live on base and stuff? I heard of it years ago, and I think you did have to live in their facilities, and at their location.

Yourhand, I see those commercials on t.v. and wonder to myself; "Where the fuck are those people's governments?"
Why aren't *they* doing something in their own countries?
They should be advertising in their own countries.
Anyone who gives money to those scams is a sucker! If you want to donate money to "poor people" do it in your own country.
There's plenty of poor people in the U.S., England and Australia I guess.

Poppeye I'd never donate to those programs I am suspicious of them being a scam, I would however donate time and my own personal energy  locally, to help the needy.
