Okay we all have to take care of our skin, and it's getting to be that time of year again...

So what is your favorite product?
And does anyone know of a brand that won't break you out with acne?
Or what is the strongest spf out there?

mdr080480 -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 4:37:46 PM)

I use No-Ad, spf 30 or 45. Can't say it's my favorite but this brand seems to work well, and it's good for working in the sun or swimming. I never had any issues of acne when using any brand of sunscreens, so I don't know there.

FelineFae -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 4:40:28 PM)

hmmm, spf 50 is the lowest i'll buy, normally i get spf 75.
since you have to reapply anyways, i wonder if you can overkill with the spf?

mdr080480 -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 4:46:31 PM)

I've driven people mad with my skin, I burn fairly easy, but then I have a tan that lasts for a week or two, and I hate being tan. I know a few people who can stay in the sun all day and just burn with no tans.

I really just use anything lying around, and it so happened that there were a few bottles of No-Ad brand lying around, so I just used it.

KneelforAnne -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 4:52:35 PM)

Hello FelineFae,

I am also a fan of the NO-AD, though I don't use it on my face.  I use the NO-AD spf 60, waterproof everywhere BUT my face.  It does not cause breakouts on my arms and chest, but I couldn't say for anyone else.

When I find the NO-AD 60, I tend to buy 3 or 4 bottles because it seems to go fast.

On my face I use Hawaiian Tropics for faces ( I think 30?)  which is waterproof but makes the skin around my eyes burn, and I have recently gotten Ocean Potion 45 clear zinc oxide to try and take the place of that.  It says that its for faces, and that it won't clog pores, so we'll see?

I also use a big floppy hat and huge sunglasses... *smiles*

All of the above are just for beach days, or days that I know I will be out in the sun.

For everyday use I use Oil of Olay "complete" moisturizer for sensitive skin...it has a 15 spf and it does not cause me any breakouts.  I've added an eyecream from OoO too, recently and it seems to work ok.

I have sensitive skin, so I think the above products should work out ok?

(Except for the Ocean Potion, I've yet to use it!)

Happy summer!

I have skin that is sun-sensitive and allergic, that breaks out from certain products.  So anything on the face/neck is Neutrogena, the brand costs a bit more but is worth it.  For arms and legs I can use No-Ad or Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone, etc.

curiousINct -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 5:05:40 PM)

Coppertone Kids 70spf on the body. Works well and doesn't have to be re-applied constantly.

Coppertone WaterBabies on my face. It's very gentle on the skin. I don't remember what the highest spf is, but I have very fair skin and it does the job.

FelineFae -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 5:15:58 PM)

i love the stuff for babies/kids too. i think they make it stronger some how?
i'm am gonna try the neutragena on my face this year.

oh fyi- i've found the best sun burn care is noxema.

samboct -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 5:20:18 PM)

I can throw out some general observations about sunblock- since if you're looking for a sunblock over 15, I suspect that you're not using the stuff correctly.

The SPF scale basically divides the amount of time spent in the sun by the number i.e. SPF 4 means one hour in the sun = 15 minutes.  Since peak sun that leads to burns is typically only 4 hours or so, an SPF 15 should reduce sun exposure to about 15 minutes- and some sun is good for you unless you have some auto immune disease like lupus or are on some antibiotics.

There are two different technologies used in sunblocks-
1)  Organic compounds such as PABA. Often these compounds require some exposure to the sun to actually form a UV blocking compound.  This time frame can vary between 15-30 minutes or so when effectively you have little to no UV blocking protection.  In some cases, they also react with the skin and can cause some type of reaction.
2)  Inorganic compounds.  These compounds such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide do not require any exposure to the sun to work- they're good from the get go.  The inorganic compounds reflect UV and don't let it penetrate to your skin.  There are two types- nanosized compounds which go on clear, and the older technology which goes on white.  The older technology is probably the safest stuff in terms of skin irritation- these compounds are unreactive and if you see it- it's there.  The nanosized compounds go on clear.  Unfortunately, some of the zinc oxides proved to be a bit more reactive than initially anticipated although I think the titanium oxides are still pretty stable.  Your skin might react with the nanosized zinc oxide.  I would not worry about the "nano" aspect- zinc is an essential nutrient, and titanium is pretty benign- plus oxides tend to be quite stable, but it could be annoying.

In terms of the testing that gets done on sunblocks- here's where the larger firms are far more scrupulous than smaller firms.  P + G and L'Oreal know that they are targets for nasty lawsuits and do pretty rigorous testing on their products.  Since the FDA has been overwhelmed as of late (and yes, sunblocks should get FDA approval since there is a claimed medical benefit.)  and in practice, the smaller firms putting sunblocks out can't afford the testing, so it's pretty limited at best.  Generally they ask their staff to see how the stuff works.

Hmmm, gotta think on that a bit.
Thank you for the insight [:)]

DesFIP -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 5:56:24 PM)

Anything with micro particles of titanium oxide. Either from the health food store or the dermatologist's office. Anything else smears all over my glasses and gets in my eyes.

But I don't like No-Ad.

mummyman321 -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 7:14:42 PM)

I use Copper Tone Sport (SPF 48). Its water proof, sweat proof and is not oily. I am an avid kayker and I only have to reapply it maybe once for all day in the sun. I cannot comment on acne since I have never had it.

girlygurl -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 7:23:42 PM)

I use any product that's high on the spf. I lean towards specially made for faces when putting on my face, other than that I'll buy what's on sale at the time. Although, I find the products for littles are pretty reliable as they are going to make dayumed sure it works. No one wants a law suit from some angered parent cause their little got severely burned.

I've had skin cancer four times and will probably have more since I was foolish when I was young and burned the heck out of myself. I refused to understand that this redheaded, fair skinned chick couldn't get a tan. I've had such bad sunburns that my eyes swelled shut, lips puffier than Angelina Jolie, and had heat and sun stroke. Good thing I learn faster as an adult. [:)]

Lynnxz -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 7:39:41 PM)

I just bought Nutritioniste Skin Renew from Garnier... spf 28

It's not greasy, and it smells nice... works for me. I'm thinking about chasing C around with it as well. He wears the greasy stuff, and I hate the taste.

Vendaval -> RE: Sun Block (3/24/2009 11:46:09 PM)

I forgot to mention Bull Frog, the sunblock made popular by legions of surfers, swimmers and those who spend long hours in the water.

LaTigresse -> RE: Sun Block (3/25/2009 7:18:44 AM)

I use Isomers on my face, neck, and chest. Hats and sunglasses.

The water and sweat proof superstuff for kids for my other exposed parts. I also wear alot of baggy old long sleeved white cotton men's dress shirts when working outside and riding. And avoid being out during the worst part of the day. Try to stick to mornings and evenings.

aravain -> RE: Sun Block (3/25/2009 8:44:20 AM)

I just don't go out into the sun...

FangsNfeet -> RE: Sun Block (3/25/2009 1:23:52 PM)

Bull Frog has that masculine scent that my wife likes me to wear.

Strongest spf? sounds like a question for google. Let us know what you find out.

TranceTara -> RE: Sun Block (3/25/2009 2:38:51 PM)

I love Aubrey Organics. They have a green tea SPF 25 or 28. That can leave a bit of a white film from the titanium dioxide so I get the SPF 20.

I also like UV Naturals, which uses zinc oxide, about 24%. They have SPF 15 or 30 available. To get an even dispersion of the zinc oxide, they use a lot of oil, so it can be quite greasy.

glanstat -> RE: Sun Block (3/25/2009 3:30:01 PM)

Two basal cell cancers cutoff so far, lots of sunburns many years ago.

I still enjoy naked in the sun, usually with a full brim REI hat now.  Usually goop up with some 30 or so.  Planning on another free hiking trip in Arizona this weekend, nothing better than a few mile hike starkers.

I get checked by a cute gal PA every six months to a year.  She looks at every inch, lots of fun.
