The sky scraper wont be rebuilt.

Not in the next 20 years.

Uhhhhmmmm....for record.....

(It's being rebuilt as we speak).

i think it would be cool to retain the World Trade Center, but what i thought would have been cool was having it start as the two buildings on the bottom with the names of people inscribed and then have it meet in the middle as one building. To me, this would not only memorialize what happened, but also show that while they came down they still existed in the hearts of America along with all the victims. And 60 years from now when the towers are only a memory to most who remembered when they existed, the building starting out as the TWO buildings would help it be remembered by still very much visually showing how it once existed and those who died when they came down and why.

I just think changing it all the building doesn't resemble the towers at all, the name either, that it will simply become its own concept instead of also being a reminder of what once was for those who won't remember what once was.

Hi angel,

There are photos and designs here for the memorial.

I'm sorry, but the name Freedom Tower strikes me as just a little hokey

Yeah- there's a lot of stuff being "built" as we speak. Doesn't mean it's making progress.

Construction is dead right now- it's going to take way longer than it would in a good economy to get them built, especially since the developer is having trouble interesting tenants.

I agree with Arpig... freedom tower is hokey... almost as bad as 'freedom fries'.

Personally I think the WTC name should be retained.

Just to throw it back in the face of those who destroyed it.

However, if you throw the WTC name back in the face of those who destroyed it, won't they try to destroy the new one just to throw it back in your face?  I don't think I really want to lease an office there if a contest exists between you and them with me in the middle.

VanessaChaland -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/29/2009 2:00:45 AM)

They could call it "Commerce Central" for all I care. Its just a building. A place where people will go to work, make money, sell stuff that most people can't afford and others don't need.
To me, any symbolic sentiment that a name *could* have meant, has been lost by the last 8 years of the former administration and the way commerce/business conducted itself (with obvious results) of late.
Perhaps "Redemption Plaza" would be a nice gesture to the rest of the civilized and developing world. :)

MarsBonfire -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/29/2009 9:27:31 AM)

How about, instead of WTC, we call it FUAQ Towers?

was anyone there when IT happened?  i saw the second plane hit

Across the river, a bit too far to see anything more than the smoke. Trying to call some of the 215 colleagues who died out of the 1150 working there was horrible enough without seeing it. I was asked to transfer to the WTC office a few months before and declined. A few others of us who were acquired earlier in the year weren't so lucky, including our General Counsel.

I know most companies that actually lost people there won't return. Id go to the new "Windows on the World" if one opened though. Like some people see "god" in the mountains or oceans, I saw the power of humanity (at its best and worst) in those views.

Vendaval -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/29/2009 3:09:11 PM)

There is no way to really know, aravain.  I have not had an experience like that and hope not to in this lifetime.

Actually, I had that thought right after it happened, rule. I still believe that what we should have done is really fuck with the terrorist's heads. Rebuild the towers just the way they were, bolt by bolt....and then deny it ever happened. Just think of the results.

"We blew up your world trade center!"
"No you didn't"
"We leveled it..both towers!"
"No...it's right there where it always was."
"But we have videos showing the destruction!"
"I have a video showing bigfoot. It doesn't mean that it's real."

We could have had them jumping up and down and going nuts...now THAT'S what I call psychological warfare!

LOL - I LUV that way you think - what a lovely twist :)

aravain -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/29/2009 4:54:56 PM)

I dunno, I felt uneasy even visiting when I went to NYC, like two years ago. It just isn't a place I'd want to work in.

It was always a horrible place to work in for many people, including me. Nothing to do with 9/11!

Vendaval -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/29/2009 7:33:00 PM)

I have some friends living in NYC and a standing offer to visit.  When that time comes I will go to Ground Zero and pay my respects.

Maybe, but sometime you have to make a stand.

I don't see why we can't call it both names.  The Freedom Tower located at One World Trade Center.   I also like the message retaining the name "World Trade Center" sends to the world.

Aneirin -> RE: Name change for new World Trade Towers (3/30/2009 5:07:18 AM)

I am pleased the ''towers'' are being rebuilt, but I believe it should retain the old name of WORLD trade centre as that is the place the world once looked  as being THE place to represent the world.

Also keeping the old name is defiance, defiance at those who wish to destroy, upset and otherwise make their point in horrific and violent ways, when they attacked the towers, they attacked the world, and by attacking the world, they alienate themselves to the world. Just to remember, it was not only US citizens that died in that atrocity, but also many representatives of other  countries who had business in those buildings, maybe even representatives of the same country as the murderers and I suppose even the same belief the murderers martyred themselves for.

Thinking of the name the possible name ''freedom'', what does that indicate, well, freedom as we know is a difficult thing to define, as what is freedom to one might be enslavement to another and many definitions in between. I find the word freedom as an ideal, not a definite, as who is free, are you, are we, are those who wish harm against us free ? If we live in fear and prejudice, then we are not free, none of us.

The other thing, WTC of old, many knew of it, but where it was,was not always thought about, the WTC being the attraction, not where it resides, it represented the world not just the country it stood in, perhaps the possible name ''freedom'' tower,is more about representing the country the building stands in this time, maybe.

But the towers should be rebuilt , the same as they were before, get the familiar and famous skyline back, build them just as they were, but build them with modern materials and techniques and the world should be involved in the construction, so the world can once again have it's world trade centre back.

Together we stand, divided we fall.

The world should stand together in the face of oppression.

Knowing New Yorker's, their probably going to call it whatever they want to call it.  I can't recall the name of the building, but when they renamed it, they kept right on referring to it as the name/business of the building that it once was.  And from what I hear they do the same thing with a building in Chicago that changed names.  Granted, the reason for the name changes might not be the same, but people wil call it what they want to.
