I have done some work for some local papers and some local people. Get yourself known, win some contests and do some work for free. Once you get a name for yourself people will start coming to you.
Believe it or not you have to be very very good to get into anything. I have sold some of my photographs and taken some special orders, but it is very difficult to get published if you are unknown.

There are amature photography contests all the time. I always found out through my school or through photography magazines. Enter them into a county fair or an art show, if someone asks you about it you can let them know that you do custom work as well.
For a while I took pictures of people's houses and that was just word of mouth. Someone loves it and tells someone else and so on.

I have a few friends who enjoy photography and various other forms of art, and depending on your subject/style you may like the site they use often, www.deviantart.com.

You can sell your work on there, or choose to just display it, it's up to you.

Best luck, and please post a link on the boards sometime, I'm a huge art fan, I'd love to see what you do

--EDIT-- Please don't be turned off by the word deviant, it's not a pono site or anything lol It's just artwork that's not quite mainstream. There are BDSM subject works on there and all, but it's definitely not ONLY for that kind of thing

misssub, I have a photobucket account well I actually have many lol, and it's catagorized by topics, so like todays pictures will all be under a catagory called Picture from trip to Ellis lake 1-25-06

And my dogs pictures will of course all be under a file in his name, and nature pics under nature pictures, and so on and so forth, and You'd more than welcome to browse the albums. not all of them are going to be artist quality, but they're precious to me hehe

The other thing is that although there are many people who like digital pictures most of the contests and the demand is for 35mm photography.
I am not sure what kind of camera you have, but you will have better luck with a good 35mm then with a digital. I know that many of the contests that I have been in did not even allow digital pictures to enter and in the county fairs they required that digital be in a seperate catagory (without sub-catagories)

I've turned out far better pictures with digital than 35 MM and yes I did use a 35 MM for the entire time I did photagraphy up untill 2003 when I bought a digital.

It's true that sometimes the pics are washed out cause bad lighting, or blurry but I can tell that and delete them right away, and not pay 6 dollars to develope a roll to find out over half of them are garbage lol.

I take good pictures, it's just sometimes with a 35 MM they one my dad has has special wide lense and telophoto lenses and I'd never used telo before so my hands were shaking an the pics all came out incredibly blured, not to be un expected for a first time.

All though I do hate the constant need for batteries and low batteries stopping speed of clicking an taking pics and all the "evils" of digital hehe

The reason they don't include digital in most contests is because everyone takes good pictures with digital, there isn't a whole lot of talent involved (no offense). It is difficult to take good 35mm pictures so it makes them all the more valuable.
I love my digital camera, don't get me wrong, and I use it quite a bit and take beautiful pictures with it. I am simply explaining why 35mm is more sought after in contests and some professional cases.

I take gorgious pics on 35 mm or have in the past, I don't use 35 any more. I did tryt o use my dad's telephotolense like I said and well it's a diffrent beast I tell you Photagraphy does take talent even with a digital. some people are just rubbish at picking good subjects and knowing lighting. You also have to hold very still or your pics will be blured, Some of your digitals can't handle low light situations either, even in bare low light like at 4:30 it's getting dark here. But yeah most people can turn out pics on digis

All I'm saying is that you won't have as much luck with contests and getting professional work if you use strictly digital. Unless you are entering contests specifically for digital, I assume they have these, but I have never looked.

yeah I know, I'm just saying, digital has special nuances you have to know sometimes too. I tookd a picture that would of been a perfect picture, a big black lab hanging out the white truck window, but it was cloudy so the pic came out washed out, and a better digital like a fuji real time photo processer would not of done that.

Create a portfolio. That is the first step if you are serious about utilising your talent. Its VERY rare to find someone to look at single shots - you need to be consitant. Then it is either word of mouth - which is tricky and not always productive unless you have connected friends, or - and this is the hard part - go walk about. Submit your work to any and every publisher or magazine you know of. Last resort, find yourself an agent - but you will end up paying money for them to find you work. If its just for the thrill, submit wherever and whenever you want. Something always gets published.

If its competetions your interested in - then there are lots about for all camera types. I have to disagree with siamsa (I know she dont mind) - though and say that using a digital isnt always easier. Some people have no idea how to use one and just take bad pictures. Its not so much the quality of the result its whats being caught that matters above anything else.

Peace and Rapture

No, I don't mind.
It is, of course, only my opinion and anyone and everyone is free to disagree (in fact, more then one opinion is always better)

I like her too. all though we haven't talked in ages I do like her information. It's good and right on

DA I also agree digital camera's don't = good pics. I should show you some of the shitty pics that I've turned out Siasma lol. Through no fault of my own, the picture was good possibly even great, but the low light capabilities in the camera suck so as soon as it even starts getting over cast or dark the camera won't take legible pictures.

Awwwww, thanks, it's nice to feel loved

I agree that a digital camera is not fool-proof, but it is much less difficult to take bad pictures with one. Most of them automatically adjust for light and movement (unless you have a really cheap-ass one) and it is much easier to take a perfect picture with one.
