LilithVonworren -> Electric Tape Problem. (3/30/2009 12:36:01 PM)

Hello everyone.

I was in a fetish show this weekend in which I was supposed to look like a jointed doll, so I had electric tape on my wrists, elbows, shoulders and knees. I only had it on for maybe a half hour at most.

For some reason, my elbows did not take well to it. They're very red, sensitive and dry, but the rest of the parts I had it on are completely fine. I'm not sure if it's because I had it to tight on there, or what, but I want to figure it out.

It's been four days since the show and it only seems to be getting worse.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Any suggestions as to how to make it go away?

Sorry, I'm a n00b here; Why was my picture removed?

It was just my elbow.

I had a similar reaction to electrical tape once (Nipples).  I think I put some lotion (Probably Vitamin E, knowing me...fairly sure that stuff can mend just about anything) on and it cleared up within several days.
Now, the fact that yours is getting worse makes me wonder if you have some sort of allergy rather than just a simple sensitivity.  Gotta say if it doesn't go away relatively soon (Few more days), I would go to the doctor and anticipate a pack of steriods as treatment (Go to the doc sooner if any difficulty breathing, etc.).

Elbows can be impressively tender - there's a reason "patch tests" for allergies tell you to put a drop of the product on the inside of your elbow or wrist. It's some of the most easily irritated skin on the body, and it's quite plain when that skin is irritated.

If it keeps getting worse, see a dermatologist. Meanwhile, try some lotion with cortisone in it, or something made for diaper rash. Either of them are suitable for sensitive skin, and tend to be good for calming skin irritations.

~FR~

I think I read once that the skin on your elbows is, actually, the same 'type' of skin the body 'uses' for nipples, too...

not completely helpful, but a good warning not to put the tape there, next time.

But, yeah, cortisone is good... if it feels like it's burning or something, try putting on some goldbond cream (I don't know if they include cortisone, but it helps me when my elbows start burning from dryness and stuff)

I would used a vitamin E cream. More than likely the friction of the tape against a moving joint is the culprit. If you were allergic to the tape it would show up the other places you had the tape. You might consider an underwrap next time especially around the joints. Any local drug store carries sports pre-wrap to be used under tape. See the attached link.

elbows tend to be the driest skin during the winter for most people - so they would be extra sensitive to any irritants.  Although it's not out of the realm of possibilities that you are allergic to it and only react there - as I know someone who reacted to certain metals in her piercings in one part of her ears and not another (weirdest thing I've ever seen ... but I will swear on whatever you ask me to that it's 100% true) - it's far more likely that it was a combination of drier skin, the movement of it at your joints (and people tend to move elbows more than other joints), and the fact that that skin is really sensitive for most people.

Cortisone cream and benedryl. Basic antiallergy stuff.
There's probably something in the adhesive you're sensitive to. In future, wrap in saran wrap first, then the tape over it.

And I'm betting you would have the same kind of reaction to duct tape.

Thank you all so, so much for your answers. I put some lotion with Vitamin E on it for a couple weeks or so and it has finally cleared up. Strangely, my skin shed a bit when I put the lotion on. I guess the skin just got really irritated and died. I won't be trying electric tape on my elbows again anytime soon!

Use that medical cloth tape next time. The adhesive on BET is not all that skin friendly. There are many different adhesives around, believe me I know, my Mother is an expert in the field. The adhesives used on tape which is meant to be applied to human skin is vastly different.

Speaking of dear old Mom, she knows very little if anything about my fetishes, but we have intelligent discussions about all sorts of things, and adhesives did come up. She told me that there are adhesives that are so 'aggressive' that once applied they never come off. They will rip your skin off first. I almost got a hardon when she told me about that. Literally tape that if you put it on a two by four it would splinter the wood before letting go. I decided not to have any of that around the house just in case I have one too many beers one day and..................

Other than medical tape, probably the best tape for human skin would be simple masking tape, but it is not that strong. It all depends on what you want to do with it.

My skin gives me fits with masking, scotch, and drafting tape.  Looks like I had too many years with pieces of drafting tape on my hands, and it's made for problems with a lot of adhesives.

Even some first aid tapes give me a problem.

Zechriel -> RE: Electric Tape Problem. (4/16/2009 4:08:14 AM)

Good morning,
yes use Cortisone cream often and like with my Ums reptiles..shed is good! It means that the old, hurt skin is making way for new healthy skin. Even the snake when he gets tiny cutsonhis belly from slithering will scab over and shed them making a new pretty belly. So at least that is good!
Maybe next time -on that area, might want to try using the tape backwards, then applying the sticky part over that one. I mean use the first layer upside down(non-sticky side on your skin) then the regular way to hold that down. Could be not really the tape you are allergic to but the glues and stickies used in it. Good luck!
Love,
Zechriel [sm=couple.gif]
