At my last annual, my gyno told me that she could "see some yeast" and asked if I had any discomfort during sex, to which I freaked out a bit and said no, then asked how I should treat it, she said, "Don't do anything!" and told me that if I started to have any discomfort, then come back and we'd see if it needed any kind of treatment.

Since then I've been uncomfortable (not vaginally, just in my head, not sure which is worse lol), talked to a few of my girlfriends and one of them actually was told the same thing, that she had more than average, but since it didn't cause discomfort her gyno also said do nothing.

I did some Google research and it was...somewhat frightening saying some end up with systemic yeast infections and the like.

I was curious if anyone here had been told the same by their doctors and most importantly, should we not have oral sex now having this 'more than average' amount? I was all flustered so I didn't think to ask my gyno when I was there and it takes literally months to get an app't with her, so I'm hoping I can find some answers here rather than going to see a different doctor in the meantime.

Thanks all, sorry for an...errr...strange and slightly "eww" kind of topic

--EDITED-- because I missed a point

So far it sounds like you just need to make a few changes in your diet.

Other than eating more yogurt, you can go to a nutrition store and buy a few suppliments that prevent yeast build up/infections. The suppliments and proper hygene, that should do the trick. Sex and falatio should both be safe. As your Dr said, if you begin to feel discomfort, then go back for some Yeast Cream and Diflucan.

Take care and enjoy.

NEXT!

salas - Err...you're welcome? lol

FNF - Thanks for the reply, and I did read on all the sites that came with Google that yogurt was good and my friend had said the same. She's said to just chill out about it and that her doc said it's just a higher level on the sliding scale, but I'm pretty OCD about cleanliness and keep getting visuals of germs and whatnot

There's never been any discomfort or the other symptoms of YI, so I should probably listen tothe doctors and relax. Doesn't hurt to get some confirmation from others though so thanks

I know I'll get some flak for suggesting this, but a mild vinegar douche will help reduce the yeast spores. give yourself one every 5 days for about a week or two.
Get yogurt, plain, unsweetened, active cultures, takes pretty sour but try to eat a cup everyday for a week and then once a week thereafter. Watch your sweet intake.
Also yeast spores can be passed back and forth with your partner so a condom might be in order to prevent reinfection. I know you said it was mild, and you should be able to catch it with these home remedies. If it doesnt work, you'll know it. Make the appt anyway, you can always cancel it when the time comes that you don't need it. If you can't get rid of it, and it does come back, make sure the doc does blood work to check for diabetes.

I have never had a doctor that would ignore a yeast infection. You may want to get another doctor opinion. One of the problems with females is we do not have symptoms until the illness is serious so if you find them early they should be taken care of . I wouldnt have oral sex until your yeast is cleared up or you can get thrush.

Yeast is a naturally occuring organism in the vagina, you get a yeast infection when things get out of whack and the yeast over multiply. Same can be true of bacteria. For me the cure for a yeast infection causes the bacterial infection or visa versa. Many times the amount of yeast organisms can be slighly elevated and with your next cycle they will come back to normal levels. Also if you have recently been on antibiotics it can cause a rise in yeast level as the antibiotic kills the benifical bacteria that keep the yeast in check. As many here have suggested yogurt can help maintain a natural healthy balace. I eat one every day and two a day when taking antibiotics. I have not had a yeast infection in over 10 yrs of doing this. Just make sure that the yogurt has active cultures in it.

"Just make sure the yogurt has active cultures in it." Not all yogurt has active cultures. MAKE sure you CHECK.
Have you ever heard of acidopholus? Try it it will help as well. Herbal tablet that you keep in the fridge. YOu can get a bottle at health food stores.

A wise doctor once told me that not all vaginas are created equal. Like cup size, each individuals level of yeast varies. Some have quite a bit while others have almost none. She said that unless you have signs of infection such as itching or clumps, than you shouldn't worry...

I am a doctor. Yeast is a normal organism in your vagina. Some women have more than others. Yogurt has not been proven to do anything, but it is good for you, so why not. Please do NOT douche, it has been shown to cause yeast infections. You can still have oral sex, you are not going to give it to your partner. If you begin to experience symptoms such as itching and a thick white discharge, then go to your drugstore and buy a cream to cure it, the one day Monistat suppository is an example. The overall point is, this is not a big deal. If it is asymptomatic, why treat it? If it bothers you, then use the above mentioned cream.

There are so few live cultures in yogurt it doesn't do a whole lot of good. You can get "good bacteria" supplements at a health food store. A decent acidophilus/biphidophilus blend is called Vital Plex. These are actually good to take for any sort of bacterial issues. i take them when i have a cold.

Yeast is fed by sugar and fermented foods. Best to avoid those when possible. (Most yogurt has a lot of sugar)

i am surprised an OBGYN would ignore a yeast issue, however.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone, I was surprised she didn't seem concerned either, but she's been in practice for almost twice as long as i've been alive, so I trust what she tells me, it just irked me to think about it

It's been quite a while now and still no symptoms of an infection and sex is still not at all uncomfortable, so i'm thinking she was right to say do nothing.

My understanding of it now (I didn't go in person, but called her to ask these questions) is that there 'higher' levels, but it wasn't in an *infection* category so it probably would have done more harm than good to start putting stuff up there lol

She did say the same as someone here said about treating it if I experience the typical symptoms because at that point it's at the infection level, but luckily nothing's ever came of it. I keep an eye on everything, kinda compulsively :/ and there hasn't been any discharge or anything else out of the norm, so I'm ok

Thanks everyone

I think it's perfectly normal to say "OK here's something to keep an eye on, but looks fine for now so don't worry about it"

If you don't trust your doctor, find a new one. A bdsm forum really isn't the place you should be getting advice on your body. We'll give it to you, but that doesn't make it the best idea.

Thanks LA, and yeah I agree, my doc's just insanely hard to get a hold of in anything less than 2 weeks time :/ I'd left her a message to call me before posting here and didn't want to go see a new gyno in the meantime. I figured with all the women on the site, somebody would be able to kind of ease my worries until I was able to talk with my doctor, and it worked

Nothing irritates me more.. than to hear a doctor say... oh that's normal.. but we'll keep an eye on it. That usually leads me to another doctor. Because to me.. it's not been going on before now.. that i knew of.. so to me.. it's not normal.. and keeping an eye on it to see if it possibly might get worse.... no thanks.

High yeast counts can also be signals for other issues.. such as Diabetes, food allergies, insulin resistance, and digestive disorders.

If you have any problems with mood swings, IBS symptoms, headaches/migraines, sleep problems (insomnia and/or sleeping too much), swelling, bloating, concentration, hayfever, disproportionate cholesterol counts (aka way too much bad and very little good), etc. It all could be related.

As others mentioned .. a probiotic may help.. and certainly wouldn't hurt you to take one daily. Acidophilus or Lactobacillis.. or combinations of such. My doctor recommends Florastart.

But I wouldn't worry to much about it if you have no other issues.

Well, won't *this* be a happy Valentine's Day message lol

I just wanted to thank all who took the time to reply, I scored an app't with my doctor since the last post and after this exam she said everything was "normal", and my precious kitten was back to where I'd been last year.

Her guess was a combination of stress and excess sugar (few too many days of celebration in the past couple months and far too much bakery cakes with 7 inches of icing...aparently, this doesn't bode well for women, besides you good people at CM, who knew? lol Now that I've been back to my usual healthy diet and am significantly less stressed than I was a few months back, everything is as it was before my panic attack :/

Also, to those who mentioned it could be a sign of something more serious underlying, I had bloodwork done recently as well after a horrible allergic reaction that resulted in swollen lymph nodes (which I didn't find out was caused by an allergy until *after* being tested for everything under the sun :/) so I'm safe there as well, thankfully

Thank you all for taking the time you each did to reply, it was a great help and hugely appreciated. Take care, hope you all enjoyed your Valentine's Day

Natural, UNSWEETENED yoghurt with living bacterial culture will be a great help. Sugar in the diet feeds yeast and so does alcohol.

Eating the yoghurt and - believe it or not - applying it vaginally (you dip a tampon in the yoghurt and insert the tampon). Douching with pure rosewater (nothing elsein it) is also soothing.
Avoid antibiotics in the meantime as they will also exacerbate the matter.

miss, I am a man, so if I were you, I would listen to nothing I have to say.  Same goes for the man up above speaking as if he knows better than you, especially for men with that attitude.

I would listen to the doctor and the girl with her picture and the paddles, LuckyAlbatross.  Better to listen to a doctor than people in a BDSM message board or health food nuts.  Whatever douches do in the short term, they cause stuff to grow back in the long term, or so my wife has told me for 20 years.  And douching with yogurt????  Please!

Four clues that you should not take medical advice from someone.  1.  They blame everything on sugar or something else in the "diet".  2. They confuse yeast or fungus with bacteria.  3. They ignore drugs that have been cleared by the FDA, but herald supplements and odd dietary remedies that have been approved by noone.  It seems that FDA sanction makes a profit evil while sales in a health food store make the profits holy and the company is just looking out for you, unlike the evil drug companies.  (Sorry for the rant, my sister the nurse is like this, seems to hate medicine.  She once thought she got a yeast infection from eating too much jello.)  4. They talk about faith healing and magnesium while at the same time they cut their own medications or resist "taking that pill the rest of your life".

Anyway, sounds like you're fine.

Your partner can catch thrush (yeast infection) through sex... including oral sex. Over in the UK, you can pick up a package of caneston from the chemist... the combi includes a pessary for the lady, cream for the guy. Natural yoghurt (especially the Greek goats yoghurt) does work too and ISN'T full of sugar. I wouldn't recommend the type with fruit in it... depending on whether you're going to eat it or slap it on.

If this hasn't happened before, why on earth would you need a full dietry change... over reaction ! If you otherwise feel perfectly fine, I wouldn't worry, your doctor isn't. Previous partners of mine have had thrush... one even with the unfortunate name of Candida (or my little thrust as I called her). I didn't leave her because of the thrust, but due to her love of cheap German wine and habit of asking for ketchup in chinese restaurants.

I got it on my tongue once (please don't ask where it had been). Nothing to worry. My ex-sister in law's habit of wearing  nylon knickers didn't help.

If anyone knows how it got it's name thrust... well one of those things that niggle.

Joe
