MissEnchanted -> DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/7/2009 12:26:35 PM)

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/health/07virus.html?em

A new DNA test for the virus that causes cervical cancer does so much better than current methods that some gynecologists hope it will eventually replace the Pap smear in wealthy countries and cruder tests in poor ones.

Not only could the new test for human papillomavirus, or HPV, save lives; scientists say that women over 30 could drop annual Pap smears and instead have the DNA test just once every 3, 5 or even 10 years, depending on which expert is asked.

This is very cool news!

Great article, thank you for sharing!  :>  I will be bugging my gyn about this in the very near future.  :>
I can't tell precisely but it seems as if this is different from the other DNA tests that are currently available and are more accurate than the pap?  Incidentally, ladies, if you weren't already aware, gyn's don't standardly do those tests (One tests for the high risk kinds of hpv the other for low risk kinds of hpv) unless you have an abnormal pap but if you request them specifically (Or, like me, tell your doctor you know you're a spaz and yet you wantt he tests right now, thank you very much), they'll do them.
Best wishes,
  Davan

that's bad news for women developing cervical cancer that isn't caused by HPV.

early detection of pre-cancerous cells on the surface of this slave's cervix at the age of 20 would have been missed if the DNA test for HPV was the only testing available.

DavanKael -> RE: DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/8/2009 9:01:04 AM)

Glad that the doctor caught the issue you were having, beth.
Folks, I checked with my gyn and she said that the article references tests that are already being used and the ones I talked about in my post above.  So, if you want those tests, it's just a matter of asking.

thanks Davan.

sometimes this slave feels like a poster-child for the admittedly small percentage of the population that doesn't represent what the majority experiences.

this slave is scheduled for her 2nd cervical biosopy in 3 years due to abnormal paps. Mercnbeth so you aren't alone!

SultryMomma -> RE: DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/9/2009 6:57:18 AM)

Abnormal paps seem like second nature to me. I have had both a LEEP and laser  done to remove the pre cancerous cells. Have to go in for my yearly in a couple of weeks and not looking forward to it at all.

Mercenbeth ,

It might have been caught!

Sultry,

I have had the 'corkscrew technique and was swearing like a sailor on the second one. The first one was actually fun. I wore tons of Mardi Gras beads and a big boa along with black boots I kept up in the stirrups. We did it on video so I could see. I had both docs laughing.

The second one threw me off-it hurt like hell.
Makes me want to torture some balls...  [:D]

MissEnchanted -> RE: DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/9/2009 7:05:42 AM)

Davan,

I will be asking my doc for a DNA test  today along with another unusual test.
She's a wonderful doc, so please cross your fingers!

MissEnchanted,

not likely!

"Almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV (human papilloma virus)."

Hope that the test went okay, MissEnchanted.  I've had the DNA tests and they're a tad bit more uncomfortable than the regular pap.
beth, from what I've read (I'm not a doctor), you are correct that rarely there things that will cause cervical cellular abnormalities and cancers that aren't hpv-related.

indeed---this slave is no MD, either...merely someone who has been diagnosed with mutiple reproductive system diseases/conditions/abnormalities for which an explanation like HPV infection would have been like hearing sweet music play!!!

e.g.
millions of American women took Diethylstilbestrol (DES) while pregnant.  their offspring are at a higher risk than the general poluplation for a particular cancer of the cervix and vagina, even if they have never had sexual intercourse.

therefore, the gardisil vaccine and testing for HPV infection has no effect what so ever against the cancers of the cervix and vagina that are linked to DES exposure.

Vendaval -> RE: DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/9/2009 4:04:30 PM)

beth,

Thank you for that explanation.  I had not heard about the link to DES.

My Mom may have taken that when she was pregnant with me.  Apparently, that medicine caused all sorts of issues.  When I mentioned it to her a few years back, she remembered a different medication but I recall her saying those letters and that medical name when I was a kid, so I am familiar with the medication of which you speak.
It's good that you're helping to raise awareness about issues that can be causal, inaddition to hpv, for cervical abnormalities in women.  :>

Mercnbeth -> RE: DNA testing best test for cervical cancer screening (4/10/2009 9:11:37 AM)

Davan,

thanks!  it helps to let your gyno know as much as possible,  DES was sometimes even included in prenatal vitamins so there are many individuals who were not actually prescribed DES but were exposed to it anyway.

here's a link with lots more information:

DES Action

they are quite the activists and have steered folks in the direction of health awareness as well as litigation.  the first successful legal trial over DES injuries was won in 1979 by Joyce Bichler, a 25-year old cancer survivor.  she was awarded half a million dollars for her case against Eli Lilly.

Thanks for all that info! It really helps us to take better care of ourselves,

Exactly my thoughts.  No pap also leaves out the need to check for any anomalies in the vagina, cervix.

The cost of DNA testing vs the cost of a pap and finding problems....How much do you want to risk?
