The president makes good on another campaign pledge and loosens restrictions on  travel,communication/mail and money transfers with Cuba.

I view this as a positive step forward and hope that eventually the differences between the two countries can be resolved and the embargo ended.

Yeah it's a positive move....though there are probably some people in South Florida who are really pissed.
Though characterising this as  a Bush policy would seem to be a stretch....this has been policy for every Administration since Kennedy.

I have to agree, it is a positive view...The Castro's have for more than 40 years blamed all their shortcomings on the United States....now they will run out of arguments as to US hostility and as to why their economy stinks...no more embargo to blame the bad Cuban economy on....and maybe this will force the Cuban economy to open up more, Chinese style, one would hope. Viva Cuba Libre !!!

This forum seems mostly Americans, but here's a British view. The American attitude to Cuba has always seemed like an enormously powerful country persecuting a very small poor country- and the talk of lack of free elections etc in Cuba is hypocritical in the extreme, since US governments have more often than not supported the most horrible South American dictatorships, so long as they were right-wing. cuba has a poor economy for various different reasons- but I think Haiti's is a lot worse. You have to compare like with like.

Incidentally, George Washington's government embargoed the first independent government of Haiti, cos they didn't want their own black slaves getting any big ideas from the world's first liberated black state...

To Owner, It is not only the Bush administration that has had a hard line against Cuba. It has been every administration since John F Kennedy was our president. You make it sound like just Bush was the problem once again..

Actually the line about Bush was a quote from the story Owner had linked too.Now I'm not saying Owner is fair and balanced....but blaming him for the line is akin to blaming Bush for the Cuba policy..[:D]

Dear Firetrine,

American policy in general has been one of supporting whomever is more convinient and that changing on a whim...however no planned economy has ever worked, even on this beautiful island of Cuba...otherwise the Soviet Union would still be around, intact...however I have to agree, Haiti is in worse shape....if I am not mistaken, the poorest in the Americas....

It was right when it started in Kennedy's term....now it's a different world.

Then we were all worried the commies would take over....now it's clear, as bad as our system is....it's still the shit.

Except for that little thing about Cuba letting the Soviet Union put nuclear missiles in a country 90 miles off our southern coast at the height of the Cold War.

Actually this is nothing more than a political ploy. It should be quite obvious that Cuba's leadership will be changing very soon. It's well known that Fidel Castro has failing health, and his brother has been given the control for now. But he is no spring chicken either.

I think the US is making nice in an attempt to set up a near future government in Cuba that will be US friendly and perhaps even US controlled. Possibly even making Cuba a US possession or territory in the not too distant future.

I remember reading about the embargo against Cuba in high school back in the seventies. Bush has been active in politics a long time. I thought from what I read that the embargo was put in place by a Democrat. You just cannot trust what you read in a school book.

        I don't think a complete change of government system in Cuba is out of the question.  The time might be ripe.  I wouldn't mind trying a Cuban cigar. 

      Let's open a few cracks, and see if the whole damn thing doesn't fall.  God knows, what they have is crap.
