What causes multiple boils to form on a person's ass that won't heal? I know someone who has had the same boils for over two months. They pop, bleed, and scab but they don't disappear. I've had what looked like a boil once or twice in my life. But when I scratched, it popped open and was completely gone in 2-3 days. Is it normal for boils not to heal?

Gnarly.

Maybe, since they are on the persons rear end, they can't ever heal up enough to completely go away? :-/ I do not know.

I knew a person once that got some really gross boils on their back......I was young and there was no way I was going to ask the guy if they were anywhere else.....

This site looks like there are multiple causes and types. Some that require medical treatment to get rid of. Have your friend read up and take a visit to the doctor if none of the suggested methods work.

umm, I don't know what causes them, but would highly recommended that they seek medical treatment.

They heal too quickly. The treatment depending on the size is that a doctor will numb them and then lance and drain them... they will then pack it with gauze which has to be changed daily by someone... its not a painful procedure and when done will reduce scaring... there will be scarring but not nearly as bad as if you try to drain them constantly.  Its a common place to get them especially for men and I am speaking from personal experience.

What your friend has is shingles. If they are sore around them, and get feverish it is difantly shingles.

They suck. Have your friend see a Dr. and get put on Valtrex.

good luck!

Sounds like a staph infection to me. Get thee to the dermatologist is my suggestion, and antibiotics will be prescribed.

I had one once, did this for a couple of rounds, went to the dermatologist's office and was lucky that the oral antibiotics were effective. Next stop would have been cauterizing it, and after that surgery. Resistant staph infections are nothing to be cavalier about.

Kalista07 -> RE: multiple boils (4/15/2009 8:32:39 PM)

I agree with Celeste about the doctor and anti-biotic thing..... The two things that addressed this issue were not using 'cutesy' soaps. Sticking for quit a while to the anti-bacterial soap. The other correlation I was able to make...........diabetes....Whenever my numbers are off significantly this ends up happening.

AngelGeena -> RE: multiple boils (4/15/2009 8:37:00 PM)

I had this problem and it turned out being staph.  The thing practically took over my thigh, had to have it drained.  Nasty mess.  Not pretty.

kiyari -> RE: multiple boils (4/15/2009 10:17:57 PM)

If staph, could prove out to be MRSA (google that).

With MRSA, amputations may be part of the 'treatment'.

Don't fuck around with this.

another possibility is a pilonidal cyst (if it is in between the cheeks) - again it can become nasty if not treated properly

chamberqueen -> RE: multiple boils (4/17/2009 8:03:02 AM)

When I was a teenager I used to have a problem with very painful boils.  It turns out that one of the things which can create the problem and recurrence is sitting on non-breathable material such as a plastic seat.  Since I was still in high school I had no choice at school, but at home would make sure to sit on something that allowed more air flow.  Your friend may be stopping the infection from going away because of what they are sitting on.  If this is the case, and they can't avoid that material, they might consider sitting on a small cushion to help.

ShaharThorne -> RE: multiple boils (4/17/2009 4:15:00 PM)

I recently had one and it took time, antibiotics, drainage and bandages to get it to finally scab over. Most people don't realize that we have lymph nodes in our crotch area as well, hence the boils coming up on the ass. Usually I have a doc cut it out for me, but it was so painful while sitting, I popped it myself(not a pretty sight).

If the boils keep coming back, get to the ER to get a WBC done it ensure you don't have MRSA...that can turn into the flesh eating virus if you're not careful.

Before I was diagnosed with having Type II diabetes, I was having all kinds of problems with skin infections, boils and yeast... all of which took a long, long time to heal... Once I found out that my blood glucose level was about 3X what it should be, they put me on a low carb diet, and some meds to pull that BG level down to normal... It's been two years now, and I haven't had any problems since...

ShaharThorne -> RE: multiple boils (4/17/2009 5:36:46 PM)

I was discussing this with a diabetic slave about a few months ago when I noticed she had the same scarring that I have (I am not diabetic though according to my doctor). She is younger than me and I used to make use she took he meds, as will as my fiancee (he was recently DXed with diabetics as well). HE never got the boils, but thanks for reminding me that there can be a connections between the two.

PanthersMom -> RE: multiple boils (4/17/2009 6:01:32 PM)

no experience with boils here, but diabetics do develop cellulitis and other skin problems due to blood glucose levels being too high, a warm moist environment and friction.  i've had staph, it's nothing to mess with and will travel from one site to another.  best advice, get that ass to the doctor!!

There's a number of things it could be... anything unusual on your body you should see a doctor.

windchymes -> RE: multiple boils (4/18/2009 5:26:37 AM)

Okay, for the record, MRSA doesn't turn into a virus.  They are two different species, which would be like a cow turning into a zebra.

Other than that, you guys were pretty much spot on....boils are usually caused by staph bacteria that got under the skin, and the pus is dead white blood cells that have been accumulating, trying to get rid of the bacteria for you. They turn yellow and then green the longer they're dead, hence the lovely color....sorry about your breakfast :)   MRSA is a strain of staph bacteria that is resistant to the usual antibiotics, but there are other stronger antibiotics out there that will knock it out, though you might have to receive them via IV.

If a boil drained and healed up, your immune system took care of it.  It if won't heal up, it's stronger than your immune system and you need medical attention and antibiotics.  Some people's body chemistry, such as those with diabetes or compromised immune systems, are more susceptible to them.
