the parotid gland is a little gland that is located below the ear, right behind the jawbone.

friday night i got a sharp stabbing pain in that area, within 30 minutes it had swollen up to the point that it could be seen easily from 10 feet away. to the point that the ER doctor asked me directly "have you had all your childhood immunizations" thinking i could have mumps. (i did have all my shots, AND i had the mumps as a child. dont ask me, i got extra lucky.)

anyway, this kind of infection can get into the brain matter fairly quickly, it would seem. i know i was shocked at how fast i was really sick. (now i'm just really stoned on pain medications.)

take care of yourselves. if it dont look/sound/feel right, get to a doctor. i'm glad i did.

kitten, also thankful that when i said "i think i need to be seen" TheEngineer was up, ready to go, and tapping his foot at the door within 5 minutes.

You were smart to have it checked out. Was the actual problem mumps? I ask because I've had this happen many times, for no apparent reason. Turns out I make salivary gland stones, Sialolithiasis. The one vaccine I didn't have as a child was for mumps and when this started, my first thought went to this.

As it turns out, my body makes too much calcium and it releases through the creation of stones. The area along my jaw bone, for me usually the left side, swells to look like a goiter...nasty!!!

Proper hydration and a few glasses of lemon water seems to keep it at bay. I also use a warm compress to reduce the swelling by allowing the stone to pass through the duct.

Don't mess around with any sweeling in the face and neck area. Again, you were smart for getting medical attention.

My daughter had that happen when she was little and I rushed her to the ER. Hers was accompanied by vomiting. What confused the situation even more was that a cat had scratched her across the face the day before so they were trying to figure out if it was cat scratch fever (ironically, a hit song at the time).

It was an infection that affects mainly the lymph glands but does need to be treated immediately. Pixidustpet, I'm so glad you did exactly that and that your Master was so helpful.

thank you both.

the doctor asked about mumps because apparently the swelling could be seen easily about 10 feet away, yikes! CT scan looked relatively normal, so i dont have the calcification problems, just an irritating swelling/infection. all in all i got off easy, considering.

and yes, TheEngineer IS a wonderful master in the way he takes care of me.

Oh man I have that too. Really painful. I thought for years it was just a weird part of my TMJD until a dentist clued me in that it wasn't normal. Unfortunately the lemon trick just makes my jaw spasm.
