I have recently been told my teeth grinding is bloody awful, loud and scary, something like having a mouth full of rocks am crunching up. I know I grind my teeth in my sleep, it is just I have never heard it, so it has never really concerned me aside from teeth and jaw problems due to it. I have tried the sports teeth guards, I grind through them, so they are largely useless, but what is the solution, is there any ?

I mentioned jaw problems, well, I have recently become aware, my mouth is clamped shut most of the time, in tension, even when I am totally relaxed, the annoying bit is, too much talking or chewing as in food, my jaw gets very tired and I quit eating or talking, which might be a reason why I don't eat much, it is hard work to eat.

Any other grinders here, can you shine some light on the problem and/or a possible solution ?

I'm a grinder.  There are dental guards that you can use that are pretty inexpensive.  They basically soften the blow.

I also find that there are times I tend to clench my teeth and it leaves my jaw aching.  I started watching for it and would simply relax the area when I noticed it.  Over time the grinding quit by doing those things.

There are exercises you can do for your jaw, and I've trained myself to never close my teeth against themselves unless chewing food. I sleep with the tip of my tongue between my teeth to prevent bruxism. It works except for times of great stress, then I clench pretty hard and wake with a swollen jaw.

Look up TMJ or TMJD for basic instructions on how to stretch the muscles and deal with it all.
Good luck to you Aneirin.

Bruxism can have many causes, and it will do damage to your teeth over time.  Mouth guards are a cheap solution and can be bought at most sporting goods stores.  If you suspect something pathological, see your dentist for advice.

Hahah I have it the bruxism/jaw thing too not very obsessive though. :O) I do it in my sleep..and sometimes I get this compulsive need to do it if I'm under stress. Grinding your teeth doesn't hurt them..not drastically at least, however obsessive grinding can and does destroy the teeths enamel and eat them up.
You can have your dentist make this dental grind thing..it's specially made for bruxism, I'm not sure if it's stronger than the sport teeth guards.

However, there's no solution to this unfortunately..it has something to do with the nerve ends. It's also part psychological so if you try to work on relaxation techniques then it could decrease.
I don't grind that much in my sleep so I'm going to need a guard, however I bought baby teething rings!!
I find they work wonders..especially with the jaw thing..you just bite them as hard as you can n then somehow the tension just wears out...sometimes I just need to be gnawing on it like a dog but eventually it does ease. Sometimes I just bite as hard as I can..n hold it..don't grind just bite..and eventually my jaws gets exhausted and yeah the tension goes away..at least partially.
So I'd suggest you talk to your dentist about those mouth guards, those guards are custom made for your teeth so maybe they're better than the sports fits-all guards.
Besides that...teething rings..and massaging your jaw, teeth n the mouth area, along with relaxation techniques.

One of my friends is at the dentist today being fitted for a device to handle this problem.  Do you need a referral to the dentist from a General Practioner first?

I'm so glad someone else does this! I thought I was the only one... :)

In regard to the OP's question....

You can see a specialist. I've never been able to wear a mouth guard and sleep, so the tongue things works well. Have you thought about some sort of spacer between your top and bottom teeth? It may help...?

Sometimes teeth grinding can be a side effect of some medications (SSRI's among them).

I wear a custom dental nightguard every night. (Sexy huh?)  If I don't when I wake up in the morning, my jaw aches very badly and I develop a tension headache which always grows into a migraine.  My migraine pills cost $20 per.
I have to disagree with other posters on this thread and tell you that bruxism, left unchecked, can literally destroy your teeth.

The custom nightguard cost me a few hundred dollars. Compared to the pain and damage it prevents, well worth the money in my opinion.

i grind my teeth terribly to the point where, i was half asleep once and i spit out a piece of tooth, it woke me up and it really did freak me out.  i tried sports guards without success, i would just spit them out in the middle of the night.  i finally went to my dentist and was fitted with a custom night guard.  It fits better than the  sports guards so i don't spit it out.  Now i use it whenever i plan on sleeping and it's a lot tougher than the sports guards Y/you can buy.  It  cost a bit, but it's very worth it.  Not very sexy, but it's better than $1000s in dental work!

Yeah, I do the SSRI's, but I always did grind before that, and my teeth are not in the best shape at all, I have taken the tips off through grinding. The thing I don't understand, is where the tension is coming from, as when I was told the teeth grinding was scary, I was very relaxed, and managed to sleep like a log, which is unusual for me.

I have recently come to the conclusion, that even when relaxed, during the day, my jaw is clamped firmly shut, so much so the jaw muscles protrude and ache. the aching of course makes me aware, and I stop clamping, but as with all things, one forgets and goes right back to clenching.
