It's very possible it is a latex allergy, check and see what the toy is made of. Every time you expose yourself your reaction will become more severe.

i am also allergic to latex. It went from absolutely no allergy to going into anaphylactic shock (where your throat swells up and you have difficulty breathing) at the dentists office.

See an allergist or your Primary Care Physician to determine for sure and mention the kidney infection, i've never heard of a kidney infection as a result to an allergy though.

Also, see about using polyeurethane condoms. i use Trojan Supra, they are cheapest at Wal-Mart but still cost an arm and a leg. Also, keep Benadryl on hand, if you start swelling and itching, breaking out into hives. Use that to keep it until control, a typical reaction lasts a few hours, if it is mild enough you can just treat it with the Benadryl, but if the rashes and swelling start spreading elsewhere or your throat begins to feel funny, pop a couple and head to the ER asap.

Anyway, i hoped this helped a bit.

Latex allergies are caused by proteins leaching out of the rubber.  That is an allergic reaction caused when the proteins stimulate cell receptors in a sensitive person.  The solution is to use specially formulated latex (they have special gloves for allergic surgeons for example) or to go with the polyurathane condoms as suggested above

However, an allergic response is far different from an infection.  If you are getting infections, that is a more serious matter and you need to be looking elsewhere for that cause.

Many of the jelly sextoys on the market are made with a chemical called phthalates which can cause itching and burning.

I've had toys toys that were made from this and caused me horrible pain. They usually give off a weird funky smell after awhile also which is a telltale sign you have a toxic toy. These days I'm pretty picky about which ones I buy.

You can find more info on this at http://badvibes.org/

You can ask your physician to test you for a latex allergy.
It is better to find out than have an exposure that might cause a more severe (and possibly fatal) reaction.

Also, if the condoms were lubricated with nonoxynol-9 that causes issues for some people.
Some lubes contain chemicals that cause sensitivities in some people as well.

As for the kidney infection, an infection means that some kind of bacteria made it's home in your urinary tract and then traveled to your kidneys.
One possible way would be for the toy to have not been cleaned well between uses or for you or your partner to have perhaps gotten some kind of cross contamination ex. from anal play.
Sometimes allergies/ irritations can make it easier to get infections.

It does sound like an allergy to something.

I'm one of the ones that is EXTREMELY allergic to spermacide, and an assortment of other chemicals. Alot of Jelly toys will cause a bad burning sensation when you use them. Cheap toys are a waste of money in the long run.

I'd definately go to your doctor and get tested for latex allergy. If you are allergic to chemicals then it's pretty hit and miss. You learn to test products on less sensative areas before sticking them in your vaginal or anal areas.

You do not want to experience 2nd degree chemical burns in those areas trust me.

I wouldn't immediately rule it as a latex infection, but it does sound familiar. When I use latex on exposed flesh I get rashes that burn into the shape of whatever the latex object was (think round heart monitors from sleep studies). If I use latex condoms I get an itching and burning, and then a yeast infection. I've never heard of kidney infections from latex allergies, but as was said everyone reacts differently.

I've heard of latex allergies but don't really know what happens if you have one just know the hospitals always ask if I have one if I'm having any procedures, tests or surgery.
