Because projectile vomit is fun!



I was wondering if anyone had any techniques (beyond medical) to help them get through a bout of food poisoning. I have a feeling my next 24 hours or so will be wonderful :( I know the whole schpiel about when I'm supposed to go the the ER and stuff, but I'm really hoping that it just won't have to come to that. I'm pretty sure I know the culprit too (no more of that shit for me).

Mine's presenting with very, *very* powerful vomiting (as in, lost control of myself, if y'know what I mean, during one heave) between bouts of wooziness and an absolutely crushing headache (comparable to a migraine but (thank god) without the light sensitivity or tension/pain in my neck I usually get, only sound sensitivity). My tummy's in near-constant pain, really. Symbols (letters, music, etc.) are having a tendency to sorta 'swim' on the page, as well (but that's likely 'cause of the headache).

Any suggestions to quell the stomach (keeping in mind that my resources are... limitted at best) would be very helpful as that's, really, the hardest part of all of this to deal with.

chamomile tea and flat - room temperature ginger ale are good to ease a queezy stomach. to help bind you - make a pot of rice with extra water..... over boil it - let it cool and drink the rice water as it's full of starch.... you can eat the softened rice but Don't add anything to it.

Food poisoning sucks big time.  Frankly, about all you can do for it is to grin and bear it while your system deals with it.  The biggest risk is becoming dehyrdrated so drink lots of fluids, preferably those that return electrolytes to your system (fruit juice, Gatorade, etc.).  I know you are not in the mood to put anything in your mouth right how, but it is important.  It will also help with the headache.

If you have a friend who can run errands for you Reed's ginger brew is good stuff.
If not then I recommend tea brewed with some fresh ginger.. a bit of the powdered stuff.


Bonine or Dramamine might help

Thanks AngelikaJ and VeryNastyDom, shortly after I posted this my mom reminded me about dramamine... and it actually helped a lot. I've only vomited once since posting this because of it, I'm sure :) Most of the nausia's gone, but still having some risidual pains, wooziness and things. I've drunk twice my daily consumption of water (so almost 200 ounces) and I'm still feeling kind of 'dry' so I'm going to drink some more before bed.

Vendaval, thanks for the advice but I've been food poisoned before... last time I went to the ER and waited six hours before finally going through everything, and then they didn't do anything, just did a saline solution thing to keep me hydrated. I can do that on my own!

Gingerale for the vomiting, gatorade to get the electrolytes back in balance. Plain water will make you more nauseous when your electrolytes are already down.

I learned that one last summer in Oklahoma during a heat wave of 115F daily.

you really need to go to the ER and get stool tested to see what kind of food poisoning it is hon.  if you dont want to do that, please dont take anything to slow down the vomiting and/or the runs.  this is your bodies way of cleansing your system of the toxins.  just drink whatever you can to keep hydrated.

but seriously, go to the ER.  there are nasty food borne illnesses that can do major damage to you even after the sickness is over.  taking serv-safe classes made me realize theres no such thing as "harmless food poisoning"

I lived in China for a year and a half, and spent a lot of time dealing with food related illness. I swear by chewable pepto tablets. Use a little room temperature or warm water to help swallow it all if your mouth is dry. No cold water. They are amazing.

I coulda sworn I'd updated this

I was fine, in the end :P I didn't go to the ER because, quite honestly, that's money I can't afford unless I'm 100% sure I'm dying! Thanks for all of the concern and stuffs :)

Pretty sure it was the syrup that I had with my breakfast (NOW don't people understand why I skip it? :P), because even thinking about having waffles with syrup again is enough to make my appetite go away   It had a weird metallic taste that it didn't used to...

*shrug* I notified the managers but I don't think they actually did anything about it... I also didn't hear about a mass-poisoning, so it could have just been my poor luck :(

Either way, better now :D I've had food poisoning a few times, two of which I went to the ER where I came away with a couple hundred dollars owed (for tests and such) and nothing more than saline drip to keep me hydrated. Doctors, since then, have told me not to go to the ER for it unless I can't keep water down... so I won't *shrug*

I got a nice bout of food poisoning for Easter so I did some research.  Experts recommend that you continue to eat because your body will need it but stay away from greasy or spicy foods.  Saltines are recommended for morning sickness, partly because your body needs the salt.  You're already doing the fluids.  I also found that a nice hot bath helps to take away the bloated feeling and ease the pain from the gas that tends to build up. 

I've also had food poisoning many times and in many countries.  I've found that simply resting does wonders for your body.
