MY TONGUE IS ORANGE!!!

The entire surface of my tongue starting just above the tip is orange and fuzzy looking.  Has anyone else experienced this or know what causes it? I just noticed it tonight, but I hadn't been looking for it, so I don't know how long it's been there.  I just happened to stick my tongue out extra far when I was brushing my teeth and I was shocked at how orange it was.  It doesn't brush off... it's still orange.

I just came off of Flagyl for bacterial vaginosis, and quit drinking anything that has calories and carbs.  Other than that, my lifestyle is the same, and I can't figure out where/how this orange tongue thing came into play.

There's no pain... it just looks weird, and makes me feel uncomfortable.

Anyone experienced this, or have any ideas about where it might come from?

Thanks

have you been eatting lots of carrots lately? or anything with beta carotene in it? my cousin and two of my aunts tend to turn the color of what ever they're eating. if they eat lots of carrots ect their skin will take an orange tone to it or red if it's tomatoes or strawberries ect.

I looked up the side effects of your meds...

The following reactions have also been reported during treatment with Flagyl (metronidazole):
Mouth: A sharp, unpleasant metallic taste is not unusual. Furry tongue, glossitis, and sto-matitis have occurred; these may be associated with a sudden overgrowth of Candida which may occur during therapy.

So the furry could be from that....  you could talk to your pharmacy, they would know.
                   Good Luck

Flagyl is a really nasty antibiotic, and yeah, it probably is a yeast infection caused by it. Call your doctor.

even if it doesn't hurt, there's no sore throat, or anything like that at all?

Ask your doctor for some nystatin drops or lozenges. Works really well on oral thrush

if the doctor does diagnose thrush....replace your toothbrush as you treat the mouth.

when i was breastfeeding, the imp got thrush several times till we realized he and i were passing it back and forth.  topical treatment for me, treatment for him, and it all went away.  you could reinfect yourself by the toothbrush.

when you have to use an antibiotic (like i am now) i generally get a package of AZO yeast treatment (lil pills).  its a probiotic that replaces the good bacteria that your body needs to be healthy...most antibiotics will kill those off, too.

my doctor seems to think it's nothing to worry about.  she told me that i should just wash my mouth out with half hydrogen peroxide and half water and that it would go away on its own.  she said that if it was thrush, it would not be orange, it would look like cottage cheese on my tongue and it would be painful.

should i be treating my partner for a yeast infection as well so that we don't pass it back and forth? or is it too soon to tell?

what would we get to treat him?

i guess i need to buy a big pack of tooth brushes, and switch things out all the time until this issue is resolved.

thanks for all of your help so far.

I thought this was odd, so I googled it... it seems like there are quite a few people out there with Orange Tongue, and none have figured out how to fix it. Odd.

A common precursor seems to be broad spectrum antibiotics, but Thrust treatments don't seem to work.

i googled it as well... i want to find out how to resolve this, because it's irritating in a "i feel like i look funny" kind of way.

apparently my boyfriend noticed it before I did, and thought it was just from the spaghetti dish i had made for dinner, but it's not gone yet, and that was a week ago.

it makes my tongue feel like i ate a lot of really sour candy (that's the best way i can think of to describe the feeling).

I can't brush far enough back to get it all off because i have a sensitive gag reflex.

my doctor seems to think it will eventually just go away on its own.

Did you go back to your pharmacy where you got the antibiotics?? They may be able to help you.

OP, I'm sending you a private email regarding this. This is just for future reference in case someone else has this problem. This is a conversation with "Honey Master" who teaches about diseases of the mouth, and also lectures around the country.

me: have you ever heard of someone getting an orange "fuzzy" tongue?
HM: Yes
me: tell me about it.
me: someone on cm has something like that going on
HM: the condition is called "hairy tongue"
me: good GOD
me: can't wait to post THAT answer
HM: the coloration is due to a number of factors including smoking or what the person eats or drinks.
me: does it have anything to do with antibiotics?
HM: color may also be due to colonization by chromogenic bacteria
HM: Yes, antibiotics are a leading cause
me: ick.
me: so, what can she do?
HM: brush her tongue at least twice a day
me: she started doing that. it helped
HM: in some severe cases i have to shave the tongue
HM: not a joke
me: someone said gargle with half peroxide and half water.
HM: NO NO NO
me: a doctor told her that
HM: peroxide makes it worse
HM: but it will turn it white instead of orange
me: yuck
me: so just brush it, and if it gets worse see her dentist?
HM: yes, but really she needs to see a specialist like me
me: I'll let her know.
me: I want to post this right away.
HM: where does she live?
me: cali
HM: If she is near LA or San Fran, I know specialists in both cities
me: ok, I'll let her know. Hopefully she checks her email alot.
me: what happens if she doesn't see anyone?
me: will it maybe go away
HM: nothing bad... it may go away on its own just by brushing
me: she was taking flagyl before this happened
me: she has a metallic taste in her mouth
me: like sour candy
HM: she probably has a fungal (candidial) infection too
me: thrush?
HM: right
me: she needs to be seen, I think
me: too many seperate issues
HM: yes, tell her to fing an oral medicine specialist
HM: if she can get to LA or SF she can find them at the dental schools there.
I know most of 'em

I know this doesn't address the orange tongue issue, but here is a suggestion for getting far enough back on your tongue to brush. Before you do any brushing of any kind, reach back to the farthest point on your tongue and brush there first. Then bring the brushing motion forward towards the tip of your tongue. My gag reflex seems to vary. (I have no idea why.) But regardless of how sensitive I am on any particular day, if I start at the back first, I can always handle it.

I hope this helps!

ETA: Oh! I almost forgot. I stick my tongue out as far as it will go. I think the tension in the tongue might help with the gagging aspect.

If it were me and it was a yeast infection, I'd ask for diflucan for both myself and my partner.
Best wishes,
Davan
