PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Saturday that Ottawa will invest in a scholarship program that will bring up to 1,600 Latin American and Caribbean students to study in Canada.
if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['hVICDUSO5_M-']='&U=13f0b2oge%2fN%3dhVICDUSO5_M-%2fC%3d655378.13225925.13365833.6258759%2fD%3dLREC%2fB%3d5316446%2fV%3d1'; "Investing in these scholarships will help create a new generation of leaders in the Americas with an extensive appreciation of Canada, including our values and our technologies and knowhow," Harper said at the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago. "It will also help enrich institutional partnerships between Canada and other countries in the Americas," Harper said. The program will award as many as 1,600 scholarships for Latin American and Caribbean students to pursue studies or research in Canada, officials said. The first round of scholarships will be awarded for the fall of 2009, they added.

WTF???   I mean it's great that Harper wants to help the higher educational system but maybe he should look at helping the Canadian students first? Or better yet, make improvements to the educational system to be more efficient and offer students a better quality of education.

Bear, don't you think Canadian institutes of higher learning can absorb 1,600 scholarship students...without adversely affecting Canadian students?

To quote:  http://www.internationaleducationmedia.com/canada/

"There are currently 500,000 full-time undergraduates at Canadian universities, 200,000 part-time undergraduates, 75,000 full-time and 40,000 part-time graduate students. "

Probably though I think what would make more sense is to look into lowering the tuition to the universities and colleges first.

My youngest was just accepted into Humber, gonna cost 4000 a year, without labs, books, etc etc etc,
reducing fees would go a long way to making it more feasible.
