I assume it's a telemarketer he doesn't have any friends that'd call the house, they'd all know he was at work and to get ahold of him through his cell.

Anyway the phone rings I say hello, and they said is James XXXXX there? And I said no he's at w*ork and they wanted to speak to his wife, so I said we're not married, and they said is there another number I can reach him at , and I say first tell me why you're so hot to trot to call him, and she hung up lol.

Sounds like a bill collector.  Telemarketers will talk to anyone who answers.  Bill collectors will generally only speak to the person with the debt, or their spouse.

Depends on why the telemarketer is calling, Cali. In some cases, they can only speak with the person whom they are calling for or their spouse, based on what the client of the telemarketing company requests. At the call centre that Lumus is a manager at, they have several programs including a political one where they can only speak to the registered voter. Or where they authorize credit cards for a major store, they have to speak specifically with the card holder only - not even their spouse. Once YHMA mentioned that she wasn't married to James, legally the rep probably couldn't say a word except ask if there was another number to reach him.

Now, admittedly, it does sound more like a collector. Having worked collections myself, it sounds like we would have handled a call. Hard to say though.... :)

Rainfire, any one with legal business with Daddy would have his cell phone, he doesn't use our home phone number for business:) Either way if it's important they will call back later.

I remember one time walmart discover called for me, and they wouldn't identify themself, and when told around here we ask who's calling before delivering the call, since junk companies pester us a lot, they said they were legally only allowed to identify and state what they wanted with the person the call was intended for.

The thing to be careful with about business calls (especially collections and telemarketing) is that in some states, the caller is not allowed to call known cellphones because it is illegal. So even if it was a legitimate business call, they might not have been able to call a cell phone. (If I remember right, it might be a national U.S. law, I'd have to check though.) I remember that when I worked in collections, helping clients on debt reduction plans, if they even mentioned once that we had reached them on a cell phone, I had to end the call and note the account. In some cases, the cell was all we had as a contact number and if that was the case, and we couldn't contact them at any other number, then they were removed from the program. Having a viable landline phone number we could talk with them at was a stated condition for acceptance into the program.

Maybe they'll call back and you'll find out what it's about. If not, then obviously it's not worth the effort.

Telemarketers can be quite cunning they'll ask by surname based on what sex the person is that answers the phone i.e. if it's a male you'll hear "Hello is Mr Smith there." If the person answering is female they'll ask if Ms Smith is there. They don't care who is there really because all they want is a conversation with anyone that'll listen (foot in the door), if they used a first name that'll most likely be someone that knows him or he deals using his first name which is unwise. Some companies may know my initials but few know my name as this ensures I only bother to enter into a conversation with those that have a personal relationship with me not any old random caller/organisation using a reference list generated from sales, registrations, polling lists etc.

Wow, you are polite

when people call here for previous people who were living here I often just hang up, if they are lucky they receive a stroppy "no" before I hang up...only if it is an elderly lady I am a bit more polite...I am just tired of still such calls and still re-sending letters from here as I am living here already since 2 years...

Both last xmas I received an xmas card for a couple and their two children...you really sometimes wonder why they don't know or don't get it that they don't live here anymore...

some Birthday cards also still get to here....not for me of course, but for people who don't live here anymore

The law was changed a couple of years ago due to the prevelance of cell phones and companies are now allowed to call cell phones.

Not always.  Some telemarketers only talk to people in a particular catagory.  For example I work for a deer hunting association, talking to non hunters is a waste of my time and theirs.

Raechard, My first name  gets mistaken for a boys name all the time, People will ask may I speak to Mr Moss, Or one time when calling my credit card , who I've been a member with for years, and have talked to a couple times on sales rep said they could speak to the primaryy account holder only, That was  a Mr Moss and that I don't sound like a boy, I said  I am the primary account holder, and  no I'm not a boy, my name is unisex.

I get those kind of assumptions a lot, and I am usually pretty nice about saying I am the person they intend to and just beause my name is ........ no that does not mean I am a boy and they should be asking for a boy.

Bama, that's true, like if you want to talk to someone who's 70 and I am 26, I don't fit the age group reason for your call.

I have telephobia not sure why we install these things that ring, the majority of the time it is someone you don't want to speak with.

I agree.  I despise the infernal things.  I haven't had a home phone in ages.  If it weren't for a bit of necessity for me, I wouldn't even have my cell phone.  95% of the time when the phone rings, I look at the caller ID and go "Ugh...  they can leave a voicemail."

Sorry hon....those were for me....my name is James XXXXX (had it changed to that in the late 70's...very brief porn thing I was doing)...I must have given them the wrong number...sorry...won't happen again.

Just take a message and tell them I'll be back in town on Tuesday.

Raechard, for a while there nobody but Daddy had my phone number, so if my phone rand you were 99.9 percent sure it was someone you wanted to hear from, or a wrong number, which I didn't mind. but when I moved out of the house and into the detached garage, I didn't want to run inside all the time to field phone calls. Soo I started handing out this phone number.

Well, I'm thinking that speaking to the WIFE of a deer hunter would be particularly non-productive.  Don't you?

The majority of telemarketers that I've received calls from don't really care WHO they talk to, as long as it's a live person.  But when someone calls asking for a specific person or their spouse, it's usually a legitimate call.  I love telling them I'm the EX-spouse and to remove my phone number from their database.

we get calls for the people who had this phone number over 3 yrs ago.  apparently they still give it out when they apply for credit or owe someone money.  it gets pretty annoying.  we changed our old number to this one because my ex husband was giving my phone number out as his home phone number.
