Yeah, the "cellar" is the storeroom, so the "cellarer" is the person in charge of keeping the institution supplied with provisions.  (In German, a "Kellner," from "Keller," is a waiter.)

A "cenobite" is, literally, a member of a community that lives together.  Usually it refers to a monk or a nun.

"Qarmatians" are (or were?) a Middle Eastern sect, but I don't know anything about them.

Next one..."macrobiote"

Yes. They were of Islamic religion, who controlled much of Arabia from the 9th to 11th centuries. An alternate spelling is Karmathian.

I think that this is a vegetarian?

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:04:14 PM)

biote is life and macro is large...so large life?

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:07:17 PM)

How about living large?  LOL

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:12:12 PM)

Yes, a macrobiote is someone who has lived a long time, especially someone who has followed a specific regimen designed to promote long life.  Not all vegetarians are macrobiotes (because not all vegetarians are old, nor do they all maintain a vegetarian diet for the sole purpose of living long), but if someone has lived a long time on a vegetarian diet, it would be fair to call him or her a macrobiote.

Your turn, bandit.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:21:14 PM)

Ok...this one is prolly too darn easy but...

Sabot

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:23:45 PM)

I assume it's related to "sabotage," but I don't know it.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:24:53 PM)

A sabot is a wooden shoe, sort of like a clog.

"Tabanca"

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:25:19 PM)

You don't?  A wooden clog.  Is it still my turn?

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:28:43 PM)

Whoops...spoke too soon...sorry.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 7:49:01 PM)

Smiling...I looked up "tabanca," but that wasn't easy.  It's not in OED.  Anyone know it?

murmur -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 8:44:47 PM)

Tabanca = sort of a gun, a bit like a .38 would be like, i think.

*martinet*

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/22/2006 11:06:59 PM)

Hmmmm...where did you find that definition of "tabanca"?  That's not the one I found.  But I can't say it's wrong, because I didn't know the word before finding it in the Encarta dictionary--and it's not in OED.  Tikkiee, what's your call?

The Encarta definition, incidentally, has a serious error any way you wanna slice it.  It's listed as a NOUN, and the definition is "brokenhearted."  OK, "brokenhearted" is not a noun.  After "brokenhearted," Encarta has "a painful feeling of unrequited love."  THAT'S a noun.

Also, we already did "martinet."

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 6:50:28 AM)

LOL it's a noun that refers to an emotion much like having a broken heart.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:04:08 AM)

Yeah, that's basically what Encarta said also.

Whose turn is it now?  Tikkiee, why don't you just go again.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:08:23 AM)

MMM ok

"Meiosis"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:16:05 AM)

OK, there's a science term I know.  I'm sure you can give a better explanation of it, but that's when cells divide and the number of chromosomes is reduced by half.  As opposed to the way amoebas do it.  The effect of meiosis is to increase genetic diversity in the offspring.

It's also a lovely and useful rhetoric term.  It means "diminution," in other words, understating the case.  "I might enjoy winning the lottery" is an example of meiosis.

Next one..."gimcrack"

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:24:58 AM)

OOOOO. I know this one...it's like a worthless bauble

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:31:03 AM)

Well darn it Bandit, you beat me to it lol.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 10:36:35 AM)

That's a first...ok, in keeping with today being Sunday...how about
