First thing that comes to mind about Jack Kemp is in the 1996 election (other than the hackneyed "football pass" picture that I was surprised he posed for), when after Dole/Kemp lost, all the pundits were touting Kemp as the handsome inevitable GOP candidate for 2000. Come 2000, he wasn't even on the GOP's radar. Never knew why.

I'm another one who admired Jack Kemp. I remember when Ronnie appointed him secretary of HUD and he was going to slash the budget and turn all those welfare slackers out onto the street. Till he actually began meeting with the people that were recipients of the HUD money and after 6 months his complaint was that the budget wasn't large enough! It takes guts to do that kind of public about face- its far too rare. Sam
