Obama Rebuffed on Funds to Close Guantanamo
MAY 4, 2009, 9:07 P.M. ET
WASHINGTON -- Top House Democrats raised tensions with the White House on a key foreign policy goal, rebuffing a request for funding to begin closing the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

President Barack Obama has sought $80 million to begin the process of closing the controversial detention facility, as part of broader legislation needed to continue funding for the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unveiling the House version of war spending bill, House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D., Wisc.) didn't include the funds, complaining that the administration has not yet developed a clear plan to wind down operations at Guantanamo and relocate the detainees, either abroad or in the U.S.

Obama's gotta be luvvvvving them Congressional Democrats.

Maybe the contract to close is with Hallibuton?

No, wait ... that was the last administration.

Who are the Dem's equivalent company?

We owe it to ourselves to detail what "cleaning up" may mean in this context.  We can't wish away what created Gitmo.  Whether you focus on DC's incompetence with re: to Gitmo, Bagram and Abu Ghraib or you instead focus on the need to capture and question the more dangerous men among our enemies, "cleaning up" our present situation will be messy, complicated and unsatisfying to all but the retrospect of historians, who may or may not be born yet.  My $.02....

Getting all the inmates to finally have trials will cost.

By voting against the funding it seems the democrats are forcing Obama to use funds off the budget which fundamentally undermines his stated intentions of transparency.  Obama should be making a hit list to use in the primaries against these morons.

Gitmo will be an eyesore as long as it exists.  My bosses' son was sent there and maintains a personal file of correspondence from on high which protected him in all his duties.  Ditto for the others stationed there.  The common soldier knew this shit was wrong.  What is wrong with our leadership?

64 Billion for overseas Aids relief, but Barry can't come up with a lousy 80 Million to close Gitmo?

You do understand that they will be on our soil for trial. And if any of them are found not guilty they would be free to go. I foresee some potential problems with that.

The Dems have publicly stated that the issue is not the funding but the fact that there is no detail provided on what it's going for.  Like the first time that Paulson walked into Congress and asked for $700 bil with no details and no oversight - he got told to go back and do it again.  He did, and got his money with no effective oversight anyway.  I see the Gitmo closing as similar.

...well yes. However some of us see a greater problem in holding people without trial.

hopefully the "unintended consequences" that Blowboy consistently disregards will include killing the next round of them, instead of wasting money on housing and trials.

True, but I don't quite get the point. If with the basic advantage that prosecutors and the court share these days, they can't convict them, what does that say about us ? Also their acquittal would not mean they would not be deported anyway because if they are foreigners taken under that circumstance, they are not likely to have valid visas. However some of them might have a valid cause of action in tort law, which if I am not mistaken would come under international tort law, that could be a problem.

Maybe that's what part of the eighty million is for ?

Oh, he'll find a way to close it, despite the risks. He'll even manage to illegally release some of them in the US.

I don't know if soldiers are much for gathering evidence in a war zone or not. I think not. If some of these guys end up going free they will likely be on the list for deportation. But then again if they are not found guilty that would give them a lot of grounds to file all sorts of lawsuits. And I think there are plenty of lawyers who would jump at the chance. I can picture situations where these guys are here in the U.S. and walking free. Very Trojan horseish.

I say try them over there. Where is there? Not fucking here.

You do understand that most of those found not guilty would immediately be deported to some (home or another)other Country?Though in some cases this might be problematic.....their homw countries might have some fear that they either or are have become radicalised.

See the part of my post about radicalization.....Of course if the former President Bush hadn't had them brought to Gitmo in the first place.......we wouldn't have this problem.
