One of the things Ron Paul tried that I truly applaud is trying to make it so congress has enough time to read and eveluate the bills by imposing a mandatory time frame for same before any action is taken. Not a bad idea. But take it from a veteran of a thousand psychic war I got him beat hands down with this one.

Make it so that new bills must be introduced to at least a quorum, orally.

Think of it, no more pork buried on page 1,437 in sub subparagraph R of section 412.01, nor some new tax increase slipped into a similar position on a matter of interstate commerce. Of course this would slow them down, but think of it, who better to slow down than a runaway, out of control government ?

Better yet, televise it so people can see who is there and who is not. Even tally the votes and abstentions.

A penny for your thoughts, if you give your two cents worth I'll make change somehow.

Something along these lines (either your lines or Pauls lines) is certainly a good idea. Putting something like it in place will, I'm afraid, be almost impossible. There just aren't enough private citizens informed or engaged in order to make it happen.

Lobbies are another matter. Paid by folks with big bucks they make a living by being on the job 24/7 and relentlessly pushing the agenda behind the money.

I didn't imply it would be easy, they are quite happy the way things are right now. They get money, plus thay can claim ignorance when they vote against their constituency on some matters, or at least claim it was a compromise to get something else through.

Pretty sweet job huh ?

I doubt that actually reading bills would improve them very much. I think the nature of most folks drawn to that particular vocation means that the bills will suck anyway.

I think your idea is better than Ron Paul's ...There are times when an issue needs immediate action...time is important. A mandatory time frame would be counterproductive. Anyway... needing to pass both houses is the built in time frame that our founding fathers purposely set up in the constitution.

Wouldn't line item veto power solve the pork issue? Of course, just like congressional term limits this is an idea that will never see the light of day.

Line item veto might help, but the sheer size of these things would make it less effective. Nobody can read all that. They make my longest posts look like an ad in the phone book by comparison.

If you really want to eliminate the pork, make it so that there can be no riders or attachments to any bill. I know it will never happen, but that way anyone trying to sneak something thru on a worthwhile bill would have to submit their pork on it's own merit.

It would never happen (and probably never work anyway), but perhaps limiting legislation to one issue at a time and at a maximum of ten single-spaced typewritten pages.
