The dictionary defines it as

Bigotry:The attitude, state of mind, or behavior characteristic of a bigot; intolerance.
Racism:
  1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
  2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
Yep, there is a difference

Bigotry is a privately held sentiment. Racism is the public expression of bigotry. When a guy is pissed off because he doesn't like his new neighbour's skin colour, for example, and refuses to say hello to him or invite him into his home, that's bigotry. When the same guy acts on his bigotry and threatens and attempts to intimidate his neighbour in order to drive him away, it's racism.

The bigot and the racist's mileage may vary, however. To say that an entire country is racist is bigotted, for example.

Its much simpler than all of the above. Bigotry can be with regard to any characteristic, racism is bigotry narrowly limited to race.

If the new neighbor turns out to be an asshole and the guy refuses to have anything to do with him as a result that's also racism... if you ask the new neighbor.

Okay ,now I'm confused....your the "new neighbor asshole" in your story....
I assumed you were the "guy refusing to have anything to do with him"......you really should try to be clearer when you tell a story.

Hmmm.
I've been called a racist, but never a bigot.

Racisim is a subset of the much larger bigot group.

I have never understood racisim... There are plenty of perfectly VALID resons to dislike someone without having to bring something as superficial as their race into it. But, that's just me.

Race is one attribute that people could be biggoted against. Being overweight, not having a college education, or being a foreigner are also attributes that people could be predjudiced against. One can be a bigot and yet not be a racist.
