I am confused as to why it should be expected of someone to feel shame toward their country, if it is ‘evil’ to feel pride in one’s country?

In response to the OP.

I had originally debated asking, what part was the good news, but have come to the conclusion, if it helps in sending the wake up call, not to rely on those with perceived authority, so that people might learn to rely on themselves; then yes, could be good.

Either you're being deliberately obtuse, or your reading comprehension is appalling - when one refers to an ex Nazi Youth Pope, Germany's collective guilt (I agree with Sam that that is a difficult subject in itself), and his calling for a Palestian homeland, your patriotic preoccupations have no relevance whatsoever. Sam and Ven both posted some rather comprehensive posts on the matter, but instead you choose to concentrate on an Oscar Wilde quote I posted a week or so ago ("Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious.") If you are so curious about my feelings on the subject, ask me about it via cmail: this isn't the place to make oblique comments about it, especially since you are way, but way, off the mark.

Pope or politician? Everyone seems to make political speeches nowadays rather than carrying out their traditional roles such as being proven wrong about the sun rotating around the earth. Also was that fire I noticed emerging from the Popes backside at one point, that can’t be normal.

Might start caring again later haven't decided yet. It was just a general observation that most people not just the pope seem to be branching out into politics whereas before they'd avoid it like the plague, and restrict themselves to the more general message of world peace etc. If the Pope wants to be stuck between a rock and a hard place then he should continue the tightrope he is currently walking.
