pahunkboy -> Letter from Army Core Engineers to me ? (5/11/2009 3:23:31 PM)

I got a letter from them, they want to know my comments for the cities plan and the river bank stabilization project.  There is a state highway between my house and the river. The city maintains the grass near the river. (not I)

As a city resident the water authority charges a fee for the flood wall.   The water bill and flood wall portion is cheap- it is the darn sewer that is expensive.

I guess I want to know- why would my comments be asked for???    Would it change anything?   They sent like a 17 page packet.   I am suspicious that said project will cost the city way more then it thinks. Hence MY bills will increase.
The river bank HAS to be stabilized.  But some of the aspects of the project are "nice" but not needed and likely to be boon dongles.

My opinion of the Core is positive.  They cleaned up the Cal-Sag Canal in Chicago... and the feat was impressive.

So as a homeowner- what do I do with this- if anything...?

You either fill it out and return it or you don't.  But I would say if you don't fill it out you don't have much room to complain latter.

It is not "your" opinion that they want, it is the opinion and thoughts of the community.  I am sure your neighbors and many others along the river got the same booklet.  If enough people voice concerns over certain parts it is possible that a few changes could be made or if not enough people respond and then decide to complain latter they will simply point out that you had your chance.

You need to keep in mind that the same "core" removed the natural water barriers/marsh land in New Orleans which created such a disaster when Katrina hit. Go over their plans Very carefully and discuss with your neighbors.

Fill it out, that way you know you at least voiced your opinion.

Either way they will do what they want.
