The origin of this report is unclear, sources will only say that it is "European" on origin but it raises interesting questions about the targets chosen by the pirates.

"Somali pirates using London contacts: report"

Mon May 11, 2009 1:31pm EDT

"MADRID (Reuters) - Somali pirates are planning attacks on shipping using detailed information telephoned through by contacts in London, according to an intelligence report cited by Spanish radio on Monday.

The pirates have built up a network of informants in London with access to sensitive data from shipping companies about vessels, routes and cargoes, according to a European military intelligence report that Cadena Ser radio said it had seen.

The pirates receive their information by satellite phone and use sophisticated equipment to locate their targets, Cadena Ser said.

The intelligence report also said that the pirates seem to avoid attacks on ships of some nationalities, including British ships.

It listed several attacks in which the pirates had surprised crew with detailed information of their prey, including the nationalities of those on board.

Cadena Ser did not provide any more details about where the report originated, identifying it only as "European." "

Source anonymous says the intel was actually from aliens on mars with gigantic binoculars viewing shipping manifests like on Google earth.

Think I'll wait for something a little more concrete.

Making fun of a report based on your ignorance doesn't seem all that mature.

In truth, such a connection would be "the smart thing", and may well be valid.

Have you done any research - at all - on the number of British ships versus the number of other nationalities ships captured by pirates?  Or who the insurers are, broken down by the number of ships captured and ransomed?

In other words ... do you have any basis for giving Ven a hard time about this, or are you just blowing it out your ass?

I doubt insurers is the issue. Most international shipping is insured by Lloyds.

I think Raechards basis is there hasnt been a mention of this in the mainstream UK media, at least not that I have seen. ( And I did a search when Ven first posted ) You can be sure there would have been a mention if the story was true. As for the nationality of ships, its impossible to say, many fly under a flag of convenience, are owned in one country and are hired by another.

Have you done any research to disprove it wasn't aliens with gigantic binoculars? So why would a UK source know the details of a ship that leaves a non UK port and stops at a port not in the UK? Is this what they class as need to know information? If the UK port authority knew about every ship crossing the seas from any port to any other port I’d be amazed. I’ve not checked this but is there a link where ships have stopped in a UK port and then been hijacked before or after this? Politesub is also right it would have made the news in the UK if the story had anything more to back it up than an anonymous source. Maybe there is a link between a London insurer and the Pirates, strange circles that insurance brokers mix in.

Also I'd like to point out that it's not intended as an attack on anyone simply a light hearted observation that source anonymous can be easily disputed.

Incorrect. Allianz/Firemans Fund is the largest, and I dont believe they are even 50% of the market. Lloyds is a player, but far from insuring "most shipping".

Yup, just keep letting Somalians into G.B. because you feel "sorry" for them.
