More information about the al-Qaeda network in Europe and the need for further information sharing between nations.

"Europe Pieces Together Terrorism Puzzle"

By Bruce Crumley/Paris  Tuesday, May. 12, 2009
"Continental Europeans may have been spared the devastation of jihadist suicide bombings since the deadly March 2004 attacks in Madrid, but on Tuesday morning there was another grim reminder that the threat of terrorism is far from over. Italian police in the southern city of Bari announced that they are holding two French nationals whom authorities call "top-level point men" for "al-Qaeda in Europe" and who were allegedly plotting kamikaze strikes in France and the U.K. — including one purportedly targeting the Charles de Gaulle airport. Counter-terrorism authorities in Paris tell TIME, meanwhile, that they believe the pair is only one part of a wider jihadist network that is active in Europe and remains under watch in several countries."

Interesting article, Ven.

What do you make of it?

Hello Firm,

I am doing some back research the post 9/11 and E.U. formation functions of Interpol.  Have you read much about the Fusion Task Force?  I have not seen any previous information on this in the U.S. Press so will be looking at the BBC and other sites.

Ven,

This sounds much like the actions that the US took after 911, under Bush.

Are you for, or against the Fusion Task Force?  Or awaiting judgement?

Firm

I will be reading more about it before forming an opinion.

I wonder if they used EITs.

What about a "Cold Fusion Task Force?"  No wait, different thread ;)

I always am concerned when governments do new things to investigate people.

And yeah, nothing in the US press I can find either.  Last updated info was last year on their home page and showed almost 9000 on "the list."

Maybe they did use EITs....you know, put them someplace where:
  • The police are German
  • The cooks are British
  • The engineers are Italian
  • The administrators are French
  • The lovers are Swiss

Yep, because... Switzerland is famous for being a lovefest. Actually, if you want great administrators, the Swiss are aces at it - it's slightly fascistic over there, but it runs like clockwork [8|] .

Fast Reply -

There is not much information on the Fusion Task Force in the press, which makes sense given the need for security.  The formation of this task force makes sense given the number of terrorist attacks around the world but not enough information is readily available to assess the practices, applications or success/failure rate.

I did find this from The Global Policy Forum, circa 2005 -

Sanctions Hard to Enforce

"But Kersten said there was a gap between U.N. political will and practical police work. “For example, a travel ban can as a rule only be enforced on the basis of corresponding national laws,” he said. Such laws don't exist in some European states -- Germany, for one -- whose citizens are free to travel throughout much of the continent without border checks.

“There are also difficulties in monitoring the ban on possessing weapons. There are practically no structures worldwide to effectively monitor this ban,” Kersten said. Freezing of financial assets has been patchy and not as much wealth as expected has been intercepted, he added.

Kersten is concerned that member states can add suspects' names to the U.N. sanctions list without providing detailed evidence against them and information to Interpol. “We can't take action and use our capabilities if we don't have the information, that's obvious. It may be that Interpol ... has additional information on this person or group, which can then be brought together,” Kersten said.

Such data could come from Interpol's Fusion Task Force, a special unit created since the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States in 2001. It maintains a “terrorist registry” with profiles of some 7,500 people, including details like passport numbers, credit card details and phone numbers. To tap such resources, “Interpol advocates that U.N. members should be required to make the necessary information available when people are put on the sanctions list,” Kersten said.

The U.N. has also approached him about the possibility of adding blacklisted individuals to Interpol's international system of 'wanted' notices. That would require a change of Interpol's statutes, because until now only police in member states have been able to request such notices."

Must be totally fucked up and doomed to embarasing failure then. Bush caused more terror on this planet out of total retardedness and under the influence of  like minded retards than the entire global "terrorist" threats combined during his tenure (half of which was illegitimate in most of the eyes of the world).

Well, they shouldn't remain "under watch" if they *know* that they're al qeada!
MI-5 or whoever should terminate them.

Vendaval -> RE: "Europe Pieces Together Terrorism Puzzle" (5/16/2009 12:10:53 PM)

You can always send a missive to Interpol and give them a piece of your mind, Popeye.  [;)]
