It was actually Irina Dunn.

"Gloria Steinem had this to say in a letter she wrote to Time magazine in autumn 2000:

"In your note on my new and happy marital partnership with David Bale, you credit me with the witticism 'A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.' In fact, Irina Dunn, a distinguished Australian educator, journalist and politician, coined the phrase back in 1970 when she was a student at the University of Sydney. She paraphrased the philosopher who said, 'Man needs God like fish needs a bicycle.' Dunn deserves credit for creating such a popular and durable spoof of the old idea that women need men more than vice versa."

Irina Dunn later confirmed Steinem's version of events, in January 2002:

"Yes, indeed, I am the one Gloria referred to. I was paraphrasing from a phrase I read in a philosophical text I was reading for my Honours year in English Literature and Language in 1970. It was 'A man needs God like a fish needs a bicycle'. My inspiration arose from being involved in the renascent women's movement at the time, and from being a bit if a smart-arse. I scribbled the phrase on the backs of two toilet doors, would you believe, one at Sydney University where I was a student, and the other at Soren's Wine Bar at Woolloomooloo, a seedy suburb in south Sydney. The doors, I have to add, were already favoured graffiti sites.""

Wasn't this another quote attributed to Gloria: "A woman NEEDS a man like a fish needs a bicycle"?

The real question would be, "how many jobs for all the Oprahs, Ellens, Dr. Phils and Dr. Drew's would be lost if WOMEN had the sex drive of men and the CORTISOL od men and NONE of the oxytosin women are AFFLICTED with, and had to spend as much as men for sexually fullfilling encounters?"

See, THAT question yields answers NO-ONE wants to discuss.

ESPECIALLY not Anne Heche.

Or Dworkin (if she were still alive), whom we should remember was  a HOOKER.

Not courtesan, HOOKER..

Never a hooker to turn down 5 Ben Franklins, however, even if they came from a male hand...

It's all in the context, ladies and gentlemen.  Like everything else in life.

To avoid derailing another thread here any further I present to our readers the oft-quoted and referenced Gloria Steinem satire, "If Men Could Menstruate".  Some of the cultural references are obviously from the 1970's.  An excerpt is below, click on the link at the bottom for the full piece.

"If Men Could Menstruate"

"What would happen, for instance, if suddenly, magically, men could menstruate and women could not?

The answer is clear- menstruation would become an enviable, boast-worthy, masculine event:

Boys would mark the onset of menses, that longed for proof of manhood, with religious ritual and stag parties.

Congress would fund a National Institute of Dysmenorrhea to help stamp out monthly discomforts.

Sanitary supplies would be federally funded and free. (Of course, some men would still pay for the prestige of commercial brands such as John Wayne Tampons, Muhammad Ali's Rope-a-dope Pads, Joe Namath Jock Shields- "For Those Light Bachlor Days," and Robert "Baretta" Blake Maxi-Pads.)

Military men, right wing politicians, and religious fundamentalists would cite menstruation ("men-struation") as proof that only men could serve in the Army ("you have to give blood to take blood"), occupy political office ("can women be aggressive without that steadfast cycle governed by the planet Mars?"), be priests or ministers ("how could a woman give her blood for our sins?"), or rabbis ("without the monthly loss of impurities, women remain unclean").

Male radicals, left wing politicians, mystics, however, would insist that women are equal, just different, and that any woman could enter their ranks if only she were willing to self-inflict a major wound every month ("you must give blood for the revolution"), recognize the preeminence of menstrual issues, or subordinate her selfness to all men in their Cycle of Enlightenment.

Street guys would brag ("I'm a three pad man") or answer praise from a buddy ("Man, you lookin' good!") by giving fives and saying, "Yeah, man, I'm on the rag!" "

Blah blah blah...yes, Gloria Steinem, a woman, knows EXACTLY what men would do in a hypothetical situation. However, reverse the roles, and by god there's no possible way a man could ever EXACTLY know what women would do in a hypothetical situation, and isn't that just like a man, to think he knows all about women!

Feminism is hilarious in its inability to see the male gender as anything other than testosterone fueled neanderthals. Their stereotypes do not take into account the artist, the philosopher, or any other role that would make the male gender slightly multi-faceted. If we disagree in any way with feminism, we are nothing more than fascist male pigs.

I remember all too well my mother accusing me, by way of the statement, "You men..." of every sin committed against a woman. And my only crime was being born this gender, and I have inherited it all.

lazarous1983,

It is a shame that your experiences cause you to equate feminism with hatred of men rather than social equality.

I do not immediately equate feminism as a whole with "man hating." I know that feminism is supposed to be about equal rights, however the more extreme types out there, the ones that seem to get the most attention, are obviously not interested in equality.

And who would those feminists be?

Steinem hasn`t been an extremists.

The man-hater label came from defensive and inadequate guys who couldn`t handle the social changes.

Have you ever met a radical feminist, Owner59? I grew up with one, and it is not fun. And trust me, she is not alone in her radical beliefs. Some of the most prominent feminists, such as the anti-pornography Catherine MacKinnon, would have collarme shut down in a heartbeat. But fortunately for us, she's in Canada, harrassing the LGBT community up there.

The real kicker is that my mom propagates what she hates the most about men. In her hatred and labeling of men, she attributes them only the vilest of characteristics, she expects nothing but the worst from them. And she refuses to change these steadfast beliefs, and therefore does more harm than good. Just like the extreme republicans and democrats. In their steadfast hatred of each other, they are unable to find a middle ground and move forward, they're too busy hating each other.

And please point out to me where I claimed Steinem was an extremist? And that's a neat little tidbit about the term "man-hating," and I assume it's a shot at me for using it. But when I used it, it was in response to Vendaval's post, a shortened version of her statement that I equate feminism with hatred of man. Anything else I need to explain for you?

I`ve seen the anti-porn woman. She was on Morton Downey`s show, ages ago.More of a censor and social conservative.  I don`t associate her with the feminist movement.

I think feminism is about equal pay for equal work, equal protection and fairness. This is about our sisters ,moms ,daughters, aunts and nieces and protecting and doing right by them.

Your comment on a Steinem thread lead me to think you were speaking about her.She is the face of feminism ,after all.No offence meant.

Lazarus experiences are things none but he is qualified to either validate or invalidate.

Owner, your comment of "The man-hater label came from defensive and inadequate guys who couldn`t handle the social changes" seems to me a poorly veiled attempt at a put down and invalidation not only of Lazarus and his experiences, but also of anyone that may acknowledge any of the uncomfortable or dysfunctional realities that are a part of "feminist" oriented thought.

I call myself a feminist, but I have yet to meet a single one of these extreme men-haters I keep on hearing about: what's funny is that people who are scared of feminism choose to equate the quest for equality of rights with a hysterical overreaction. Mind you, I have been insulted many times by people who called me a man-hater because I'm a feminist, so it's all a question of degree, I suppose.

PS: Lazarus, I would suggest that the problem with your mother isn't feminism, but rather that she suffers from the psychological equivalent of misogyny (or 'misandry').
