Below is a brief sample of the next vampire story for my next book. The full story can be found at: http://thetammyjo.livejournal.com/ You must "friend" me to read.
--------
Niibori sighed as he tried to stand still and let his wife, his wardum, do her work and finish his tie. She stepped and fussed with smoothing down his suit, something he had designed just for this very important meeting, then she smiled, her light gray eyes twinkling, and stepped back so he could see his faint reflection. “I think the color does well for you, Niibori-sama,” she told him firmly as she crossed her arms under her chest to regard him.
He wasn’t so certain as he looked at the dark purple fabric with the slightly yellow silk shirt and pocket accent. It seemed so … gaudy, and yet it seemed very powerful, much like an emperor might have worn hundreds of years ago, back when there were emperors and presidents and chancellors of mortal states. He sighed, “Natalie-chan,” but she ran her hands over his arm and leaned in so he could see them both.
Natalie was dressed in a light yellow silk dress that came to just below her knees and hugged her contours nicely, with a dark purple wrap and matching shoes. The metal bracelet on her right wrist that symbolized their tamu shone in the pale candlelight of his room, their room, as did the diamond and gold ring on her left hand, which matched the band on his own finger. A few hundred years ago they would have been seen as a powerful business couple, the toast of two fashion worlds, and they had been. Just not now.
Now she was a complement to his power, and a symbol of his creativity, since he’d designed her clothing as well as his own. That had been a test of his ability as both a designer and a businessman, as well as a good damu. The wars had almost left him an orphan, but the gods had not seen fit to free him yet from his duty to his Shi, so now he was on another business trip for the Patu or territory of Kansai, which Gaius had won and kept through his alliances with other Akhkharu on the islands of Japan.
His Shi had been clear in his distaste for them both and the reason for Niibori being chosen as one of those representing House Byzane. If he succeeded, well that was to be expected. If he failed, that wouldn’t surprise Gaius who would have to do something about the situation that was obviously keeping him from his great potential. That “something” was Natalie. It wasn’t spoken but Niibori knew it as well as he knew that the sunlight would burn him if he stayed outdoors for more than a minute or two. The elder vampire’s plan to punish him had backfired he thought though both husband and wife felt the shackles every day that bound them in these unnatural, unwanted roles.
He was about to put his arm around her when a knock came on the door and she scrambled away to kneel off to one side, her eyes flashing in anger. “Niibori!” An elder vampire from their own family, but one of equal rank to him, walked into the room and glanced at the wardum on the floor. “You seem ready; that’s an interesting choice,” the head of House Byzane agriculture chuckled. “But what do I know; I’m just a farmer, so let’s get this show started, eh?”
Niibori followed, knowing that his heart was following quietly behind him, her head bowed, just two steps back so that she could assist him in any way, his briefcase held elegantly in one of her fair hands, when that hand should have been in the crook of his arm. He focused on the introductions to his fellow Byzane Kataru members — their alliance was one of the oldest; Gaius claimed it went back to his first damu in the 9th century of what had been called the “common era.” The ancient eastern center of the Roman world had proved fertile ground for the Sarrutum after the fall of Rome, and dozens of elders had left their mark, first fighting then using the hapless mortal kingdoms around them to wage war. The only way to survive had been to turn their collective minds to money, and once that had been done, the alliance had been easy to form.
The alliance now didn’t have to worry about money, because there was no longer any such thing, but it did have to worry about holding on to kur and mimmum, land and the mortals on it, as well as acquiring the means to encourage both to grow. This meeting had been called because their Kataru Belen could make an important announcement. How important was it, Natalie had asked, if they were not inviting each Patu’s leader, but only a representative?
As they walked behind their host and met guests, Niibori kept stealing glances down at his wardum, counting each minute here and praying she would have enough energy to repay him in kind later. He was grateful when the gong rang, signaling an end to the casual meeting and the beginning of the formalities.
