Listings giant Craigslist has decided to ditch its 'erotic services' category, after claims that it was promoting prostitution.
The US site has been riding a wave of recent controversy, being named in high-profile cases including the media dubbed 'Craigslist killer' case, in which 23-year-old Philip Karkoff has been charged with killing a masseuse whose services he allegedly found through the site.
This has prompted Craigslist to change its listings and remove the erotic services category and replace it with 'adult services' – but perhaps more importantly the company will now moderate every single advert within the new category.
"We are optimistic that the new balance struck will be an acceptable compromise," explained Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster.
Half-baked?
However, the changes may not prevent the company from getting into more trouble, with New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo describing the move as 'half-baked'.
"Several weeks ago, we informed Craigslist of an impending criminal case that implicated its website. Rather than work with this office to prevent further abuses, in the middle of the night, Craigslist took unilateral action which we suspect will prove to be half-baked," Cuomo said in a statement.

This was bound to happen sooner or later and the persons and services in that section will simply move to other sites.

I've already noticed that since CL imposed some sort of posting fee for those placing ads in the now former Erotic Services classification, those not wishing to pay that fee are moving their pay-for-play ads into the Personals classification within CL.

[... edited to add...]

I just looked and Orlando hasn't yet removed the Erotic classifications from its Services section. However, the last ad posted in that classification was roughly at 1 AM on 5/13, so I'm guessing it's now closed.

There is a new Adult classification and it has the same warning/disclaimer entry page as the Erotic area, without all of the W4M, M4M, etc links. The first ad in this new area posted shortly after 1 AM on 5/13, so it would appear this is the new place for these types of ads. I have also noticed that there are far, far fewer ads posted thus far and those that have posted have the most generic context in them... basically "for a good time call ..." There is no longer a very graphic depiction of services rendered nor are there any longer very graphic photos of a sexual nature. Sexy photos of the provider are in; photos of the provider engaged in sex are no longer there. Basically, take the ads out of the classifieds section of the local newspaper or alternative weekly paper and put them up on CL and that's what you've got.

It would seem to me that whatever means CL has added to moderate these professional provider service ads have, at the very least, cut down on the number of ads if not made them more generic.

It's not really ditching them. NBC did a story on it this morning. Now the women are just claiming to be massage therapists; they interviewed several women they met on Craiglist in motel rooms. Craigslist is doing a smart thing here to reduce their legal liability in light of the recent troubles with that asshole up in Boston. Of course there will still be prostitutes; there always will be prostitutes. But Craigslist did the right thing here.
